How fricking awesome is Spotify: http://www.spotify.com/en/

We've got a playlist at work, so anyone can just add tracks from the comfort of their desk and music is played through the office hifi. Democracy in action. Loving it.

We've gone from Nick Cage, to NiN, to Josh Ritter to Massive Attack.

Ace, just ace.

Anyone else into Spotify.

  • The catalogue is pretty impressive although recently a large number of tracks were removed for some suprious reasons. However they do have all the 4 majors and some good indie labels signed up which is good.

The integration with LastFM they added recently is brilliant as I hate to lose a "scrobble"

The ad's are slightly scary at first but at least they are semi targeted and are fairly interesting.

Interface is great, like a very slick ITunes definitely one of the high points.

The one thing that is poor though is the radio, not a patch on LastFM's personal radio.

  • Looks good but when it says download and install I suspect that's not going to play ball with Linux :-(

As long as that is not abused that sounds awesome, can you prevent people tacking off queued tracks or are you relying on people to be fair? what if someone lines up some cliff richard or queues up a whole bunch of songs at once?

No Mac and PC only at the moment, although I understand they are working on a Linux version. I also believe it runs ok under WINE.

Well Cliff Richard doesn't qualify as music! It works fine tbh, but taste in the office is ok (now that the Hansen fantastic has left). We're a small bunch though and work together well.
  • I love Spotify, I've got a netbook linked up to my hi-fi at home that works as an amazing jukebox. I've heard you can get it to work with AirTunes, thus using the netbook as a remote control, which sounds just fab.

Or your iPhone as a remote. I'm loving that feature at the mo.

It works perfectly under Wine on Linux.

Also, where are the ads? I downloaded the free version, and have seen no adverts. It might be that running it under Wine is killing them...
  • ads are audio, not something you'd 'see'. Maybe every half hour or so, 20-30 secs.

Spotify rocks. I can now listen to the entire Janis Joplin back catalogue without racking up the equivalent of a new pair of Sidis on iTunes ;)

Yeah, just got one, Wine doesn't kill them apparently.

    Great service.

Thats weird as it doesn't work on my ubuntu and also the FAQ mentions WINE "On what platforms can I use Spotify?

Mac OS X 10.4 or later and Windows XP or later. You can also run Spotify in Wine on Linux."

How did you go about installing it?

I know how to install WINE, the implication was that he got Spoitfy to work on Ubuntu which I would love to as I have it installed on a USB key for work. However getting WINE to run on it isn't an option.

Actually I didn't read the instructions (a male trait) but having now sampled it on my winblows laptop I might give it a go under wine

Sounds like a good training tool, ride along side someone on a steep assent and start talking about Linux or Virtualization that'll get them moving

Nope I use a bluetooth unit, much more reliable and the 1.82 beta version of S/tracker has maps yey!

The Nokia website is broken since the last update, it seems to have lost 2 years worth of my data from my stats even though the files are there, tech support not included atm.
