Actually I'm a bit of a pedant, but I loved this.

Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

    H.G. Wells.

You should listen to the Stephen Fry podgram on language. He's very scathing about pedantry, which supports my view that most of the time you should probably just mutter 'y-o-u-apostrophe-r-e is you are. y-o-u-r is your.' under your breath....

What if the person was dyslexic or had some such grammar deficiency issue.

Their poor grammar could be the result of not being taught properly because of useless failing schools. If they haven't been taught then they wouldn't know and ridicule or correcting in a cruel way isn't the best way to go about raising attention to the lack of skill with language. Doing so (taking the piss out of them) certainly wouldn't encourage them to 'go back to school' or take a course. The stigma attached to bad grammar may force them could be a really talented person in other ways - back into thir shell.

Ignorance within the intelligent is the most unforgiving and all that. Clarity of mind isn't a by-product of education or academic intelligence. It's a gift from living and experience.

My job (to help reduce stigma attached to those suffering poor mental health) has been fulfilled for one day.

    Have fun kids.

If people don't tell them they've got it wrong how will they ever learn?

I think I may be the one that started this.
All I said was it should be "THEIR " and not "THERE", a common and irritating mistake but pointing it out seems to have opened a whole can of worms.I`ve never been accused of being intelligent before, though,DonDaddyD.

my pet hate on a bike forum are those occasions when people have problems with they're  "breaks"
  • I suppose that when we have 13 year old boys taking paternity tests, people losing their jobs without notice and a government minister's husband convicted of fraud (just today's news) the odd spot of apostrophe abuse should be put into context.

I believe that somebody once formed a Society of Pedants, but few people joined because they couldn't agree whether this title or the Society for Pedants was correct. I don't wish to sound pedantic, but if only they had named it the Society for the Promotion of Pedantry, it might have enjoyed greater recognition.
  • I too am a bit of a pedant! I just find it an awful lot easier to read a post where the author has gone to the effort to ensure correct SPG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) If you have to trawl through ten pages of a thread to get to the head, it takes a lot less effort for the reader if it is all layed out in the proper way.

I also realise that this post will now be torn apart for my own mistakes!! I haven't done English since GCSE, and even then I only got a C!!!

I get people who are just too lazy to spell! And try to claim they're dyslexic...

At least it's* not  text speak!

*Hope that's the right place for an apostrophe

    Glad to oblige!

Was it just me that found the lack of a full stop at the end of that sentence amusing? Oh, I see... Ah, my coat. Thank you.

I did a fully corrected version. I was about to hit "Submit", then thought "nah". Been enough of an @rsehole today already.

    I'll post it tomorrow. :D

has to be said this is one of these things that get said, had to be said i've never seen or heard first hand. i've seen folk who more than likely are dyslexic but have managed to slip though.

Don't read it, DDD, you and your devil's advocate will dissolve into a swirling pit of rage at Miss Truss' inconsiderate behaviour. And we'll miss you.
  • No, read it. The panda joke on the cover is still quite funny. And she's a Tiiffin Girl. And a sports writer.

Either is technically correct, however the s's was introduced because the poor little children couldn't be bothered to learn that when a name/whatever ends in s you don't put another s after the possessive apostrophe.

It was too confusing, apparently. Awwwww. Poor kiddies. Let's have one generic rule for everything.

Either is correct, but, in this case, the form with the additional sibilant sounds better when spoken.
