Nas is amazing both as a poet (seriously what the man does goes beyond rapping he is a poet), as a Man and as a positive black role model. I have a crush on Kelis (Nas' wife) it was somehow poetic irony that my favourite rapper would marry the black women who I had/have a serious jones for!

The first album I ever listened to was 'It was written'. It was commercial (for Nas) but still remains my personal favourite.

    Illmatic however is astoundingly good

My favourite song is Dance - on Nas' Godson album. Beautiful song. Then One Mic its emotionally powerful.

I've seen Nas on two occasions the first was at Brixton Academy - it was my 20something birthday. A gun went off, panic, people got crushed the ground got soft under my feet. It was (and many who attended agree) one of the best concerts ever.

I love Nas. Always have, always will. I consider Nas one of the best rappers of all time alongside Eminem. Notorious BIG and Tupac. (Of those four I couldn't say who was the best).

Snoop! Biggie isn't that good a rapper IMHO (his voice sounds like he's rapping with a mouthfload of marshmallows, which he probably was) but my god, he's a better rapper than his chum P Diddy by 1 million miles, as are Vanilla Ice, Madonna, Dennis Healey and an earthworm.

Puff Diddly isn't a rapper, he is a very intelligent Man and great entertainer. I'm not even sure what he is talented at - I know he's a brilliant hustler.

Snoop is alright. Biggie though, Biondino what are you saying! The tone of his voice was pitch perfect and his flow and delivery of words were second to none. Anyone could say a Biggie verse but only Biggie could deliver it in that inch perfect way.

I'm still sticking with Ghostface for the lyricism and I just love all the made-up words.

I remember seeing a documentary where Chuck D was talking about how he decided whether tracks were worth using or not. Basically he took the recording, played it to his girlfriend and if she didn't like it he knew it was a good track :)

    Ledge.
  • IMO I don't think anyone can test Big L, KRS-one or O.C on the mic....
Other artist worth noting IMO (who are 10x more skillful in comparison to B.I.G etc) are Talib Kweli, Common, members of D.I.T.C, Del the Funkee Homosapien, Diamond D.

Groups like Jurassic 5, Black sheep, BDP, Dead Prez, De La Soul, EPMD, Digital Underground, The Pharcyde are awesome too.
  • I have no idea what any of you are talking about.

Big L was fantastic, no question. And I love Del too but I'd place him more in the amusing category than the properly skilled category.

I'd been meaning to give DDD 'mad props' for his avatar too. It Was Written was one of the first hip hop albums I owned and it blew me away. The Message is still a track to raise the hairs on the back of my neck. I first heard it when at a house party in bristol and was actually sat watching the video for Ghostface's Daytona 500 at the time. They worked well together! I then checked out Illmatic which is such a brilliantly concise hip hop album. I have a thing about skits and interludes so that album is almost perfect for me. I bought Stillmatic a while ago and thats a hell of an album. The Flyest is a favourite of mine. I've avoided the other Nas albums because I heard they got pretty commercial sounding but maybe I should check out Nastradamus and Gods Son?

Good calls LCFC. Currently enjoying Kanye, Common, Talib and have always liked Blackalicious and the whole Bay Area scene. From the UK, my recommendations are Roots Manuva's Brand New Second Hand and anything by Ty.

    Anyone recognise my user name?

The video for Daytona 500 is one of my all-time favourite music videos... But unfortunately all the versions on YouTube seem to have the lip sync just very slightly out and it pisses me off.

might be wrong mate but is it Killah Priest from Wu?

The Roots are one my all times favourites too...oh and Stetsasonic.
It's a pity Hip-hop is not what it used to be....are there any others who believe Hip-hop is now dead/VERY under ground?

You took the words right outta my mouth

(Not, I hasten to add, as the song continues: Oh, it must have been while you were kissin' me. Bleargh.)

Thats right, one of the Wu affiliates.

I dunno, I guess I'm not really up on the cutting edge but there's alot of good stuff out there isn't there? Always quality new acts coming along. Well, seems to me anyway but then I'm buying albums that might have been released a few years back so I'm basically discovering old stuff.

Nothing wrong with "the loaf"!

For some reason can't help but start singing 'life is a lemon' today.

Now for an odd fact, wasn't it Biondino's avatar aka blondie/debbie harry who had the first standard american billboard chart hit with what is accepted as a rap song?

Yes, odd fact but I believe to be true, song was rapture if my random trivia brain facts are correct.

+1 Biggie is the greatest, not too keen on Nas really, doesnt light any fires under me, unlike Mobb Deep (yes I know Nas features on the Infamous), Wu and the like. Duff Paddy is a Ponce and lives off the efforts of others.

The first three Spice Girls singles are brilliant - I own each of them! Early Take That's pretty terrible, though by "Babe" they'd go into their stride. Back for Good is straight up genius pop music. And gratifyingly, now they're back they seem to have continued in the same vain with a couple of cracking singles.
