Shall I shave my legs if I want to become a 4th cat?

Hmmm I'm really an MTBer but find myself taking to the roads more these days.
Should I shave my legs (or get the missus to do them)?
I got to admit that bib shorts look pretty silly on my hairy legs.
I remember years ago I shaved my legs once and it was so bloody cold for a start and then after a couple of days it was like the devil was stabbing me with pins.
If we get a summer though at least my legs should get a nice bronze colour one way or another.0 -
Oh yes....shave your legs...its very woman like....and those hairs will get in the way of all the numerous massages you get after every ride?....oh and also....if you really want to be taken seriously then the proper clothing is very important also...only Assos or Rapha Im afraid....you can also get 'go faster' Oakleys to fully compliment the whole outfit....but even after you shave your legs and wear the 'proper' clothing...if you ride a Compact or a Triple then Im afraid your out and not a real roadie...
I hope you meet the requirements...0 -
If your serious and ride a lot, shave them, because when you go to take the bandage of after a crash all the hair will come off anyway. The difference is you won't cry in pain if you shave them.
Also you will be able to participate more actively in womens conversations about shaving legs 8)0 -
I have hairy legs, have no intention of shaving, use a compact chainset and have just started going out with the local road club. They don't seem to mind. Mind you it does help if you can keep up with them.0

Local clubs don't really care, when you start getting more serious then thats where people will step forward and encourage you to do it for whatever reasons you they may have.0 -

no need for her to do it - just do it slowly and be carefull of your shins, ankles and knees. Once shaved get some baby oil on them so they are not super itchy.
PS: make sure you clean out the plughole once your done otherwise I can guarantee your missus will go bezerk with all the hair she has to clean out..0 -

Why?....because your taking cycling more serious?....thats ludicrous...I can understand people getting a good light bike, finding a saddle which they can be on for hours on end, spending a bit money on shorts and clothing that fit well and have a purpose (and that don't mean having to pay tons of money on assos and Rapha)etc...but shaved legs?...without getting up anyones noses here its just plain rubbish...Ive heard all sorts of excuses for shaving legs...and the only justifiable one is for the pro's...who get a full leg massage after everyride...I understand that...pulling hairs can lead to boils etc....but for the vast majority of cyclists in the UK....its just wanna be part of the culture.....Ive heard guys saying "oh its better to have shaved legs in case you have a fall and scrape your legs - there will be no hairs in the wounds"....how many times does guys fall?...how bad is it really to have hair on your legs surrounding a wound?....also heard "its better for applying Suncream"...that makes me laugh...in the UK...yeah well maybe it will be easier for those 3 times a year your gonna need suncream....
This is not a pop at anyone...its just the truth...shaving legs is nonsense for a bog standard cyclist...maybe if you race and get massages then fine.....but if it makes you feel better and makes you feel more accepted then go for it...but there is no real need at all....0 -
So after all that, what you're saying is no don't shave if you're a 4th cat but if you get to 3rd cat then shave.0

No no...cyclists shave there legs to emulate the pro's....you asked the question to start with....do you feel you will be more accepted if you shave your legs?...be one of the boys?....if it makes you feel better then do it...all Im saying is that it will not help in anyway your ability or performance......Im not in anyway a competetive dude...so I do not know the culture of racing at all.....but would other pretentious cyclists pull someone up for having there natural hair on there legs?....if so then Im glad Im not part of that area of cycling...I really cannot be bothered with bike snobbery....be yourself and do what you want to do...and if your happy with your decision then fine...no need to ask on here what you should or should not do...0 -
Richyboy, I don't think Chris is really being too serious in this thread.
Maybe if you were a 'competetive dude' you'd realise that most racing cyclists don't really give a monkeys but think it's always a good topic for a wind-up on an internet forum.

a shaved leg will slide across tarmac, while a hairy leg will rip on the way - that is what I was always told by the local cycling mafia. As it happens, it is also easier to treat injuries if there is no hair to get in the way, but this has already been explained. For pro cyclists, you only have to ask the soigneurs if they would rather massage a shaved leg - or a hairy one.
Having said all that - there was a Greek guy who used to race in our division and he never shaved his legs. He never got any stick either (it was his personal choice, so why should he?) and he had legs like a gorilla. Didn't slow him down though - he was a very strong rider and was always up there in the sprints.
Shave them or not - your choice - but there are good, practical reasons for doing it..0 -
oh i`ve loved this thread,it made me giggle.
now as chris well knows ,what you need to do to be a 4th cat rider is stick to tting until you can knock out 52mins 25`s. then you decide that you might have ago at road racing, get yourself a 4th cat licence and watch them squirm when you put a lap into them at llandow. god i used to enjoy that . the poor buggers used to look like they`ve been dragged through a hedge backwards.constantly reavalueating the situation and altering the perceived parameters accordingly0 -
Ah but Paul, what's it feel like to be outsprinted by a *mere* 1 hour rider...??0

Ok, fair enough, wind up it is....just watch out for this fella in future and watch I don't bite but I must ask why someone who is obviously a cyclist would just go on a cycling forum to have a carry on?.....is it a common 'competitive dude' elitism attitude?.....
Anyway Chris's cards marked for any future entries.0 -
All I'm left to say is, take one of these.
