Well now that that's cleared up...

@jonginge - those mavic shoes are white! For starters they can't possibly be for ladies, I've read on the internet somewhere that things for ladies are pink and scented with flowers on. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, white is so impractical! Maybe when they turn up in flipper-foot size they'll introduce a black version...

Goddamit woman, get these notions of practicality out of your head! You've just ordered a rather impractical Italian thoroughbred, equipped with impractical Record, and painted partially white! Practicality is not the point here. It's a well known fact that on a decent race bike all contact points should be white - white tape, white saddle, white shoes. You must obey the rules of the Euro Cyclist. Enough talk of black, black be dammed, a pox on black etc etc.

That linked post is bl**dy funny.

However, I've already ordered black cork bar tape, and a black saddle. I'm not replacing the bloomin' things every 10 minutes when they get dirty, and the shoes will fall into the same category.

And I don't think the viner's that impractical, it's a bike, what's not to like? It'll be out in all weathers, and I'm getting Epic to give me a comprehensive course on cleaning it. As for record being impractical, well, it seemed to work, and it's got to be better than downtube shifters ;)

And I think Lake may be persuaded to send the walky ones to the UK after all! Hurrah!

Re: Speedplays - nothing 'happened' as such, I just didn't get on with them.

I'm quite happy to accept that it was more due to my noviceness as a cyclist that any fault with the pedals.

I didn't have a problem with clipping out at all, more the clipping in.

On the IOW ride (before the crash) because it was so stop-start, and clipping in/out all the time, and I was feeling very crap compared with the others, my confidence plummeted, and rightly or wrongly, I partly blamed the speedplays. It was I think the cumulative effect of trying to get used to them, and never really being comfortable with them.

I agreed at the halfway point to sell them to Attica after the ride. Interestingly, he has noted a problem with the left one, so maybe I wasn't just being silly.

    Hello all btw :D

I've still been lurking a fair bit, just got nothing interesting to say!

Arm is much better thanks - started physio and have got much more movement. Still in pain though, and don't feel confident enough to get back on the bike until that's stopped. And I'm going to do DIUK next year instead, so I'm not going to give up cycling, just won't be doing much this year...;)

    @ LiT - I despair! DESPAIR.

Black, black and black? Nooooooooo, for the love of God nooooooo.

Oh and I'm not slighting Record, it's lovely and I'd love to have it, but it's race spec and expensive to replace - so not that practical, but as I said, fcuk practicality. Of course I don't take the Prince out in foul weather so I can get away with white. This is why I have a winter bike. ..

... of course a winter bike will be your next purchase anyway. I give you a year or less to come to this decision yourself!
  • Hi Jen!!

Glad you're getting better. Talk to us more! We miss you!

Ok - so just how much walking do you intend to do ?

Fast road bike (I'm guessing 'cos I don't know what it is but at £4K it must be), road shoes, no feet on the ground unless you triathleting then you leave the shoes on the bike, so you don't need grip :D

I need to walk in and out of cafes and bars etc at the top/halfway up/ halfway down. I might need to walk to a phone to ring a cab to get me up the last bit. Works for me. PS dainty little light one sided spd's are available.

I'm sorry but these LBS' are talking bollocks. How are Speedplay cumbersome? They are lighter than basically any other pedal, have a lower stack height, are harder wearing, have a very robust 4 hole fixing method and are entirely rebuildable (every part is available as a spare and they are very simple to strip and rebuild), meaning that although you pay more to start with they are much longer lasting. Oh and they're double sided, have either fixed or free float, and allow your foot to get closer to the axle than other makes do.

Do these LBS's actually stock Speedplay I wonder?

    +1

although I wouldn't want to make Linsen think she's made a bad choice. Let's face it - Look, Time, Shimano, Speedplay - all good in slightly different ways.

One thing I would reiterate about Speedplay - the cleats can be quite hard to engage at first, especially if you don't put a bit of lube on them. I guess that's why they brought out the lighter action XS ones.

And as for white shoes and accessories - well, everyone knows white is faster

The great thing about campag (i'm told) is that you can replace all the separate components with much cheaper versions if you want to when you break them... or that's what bespoke, mosquito and epic all told me when I asked that very question.

We'll see on the winter bike though. My silly shape and the associated unusual geometry may mean it's tricky. And I have the bowery...

And clearly I'm not listening to you on the black black and black thing... :D

As regards removing pedals, put the spanner at 2 o clock on both sides and push it backwards or stand on it.

Sounds like you might be in need of those Shimano SPD walking boots ;)

Yes as in you agree with me? Or yes as in Jash is right? Hmmmmm...

As for the winter bike, I can't realistically see that I'll want to ride anything but the viner ever again once it shows up, so that may be a spanner in the works. And again, geometry may be an issue.

    Or I could get spacers.

    Hey Jen!

So are mine... I heart them.

A mate gave me some DHB 3-bolt shoes which he'd ordered and never used - one advangage of lfipper feet - and they're insanely bad to walk in with SPD cleats.

But I do kind of want another pair of shoes so I don't have to wear the MTB ones when they're still wet. In summer it's fine, I have my sandals, but it's not really sandal weather right now!

LiT - thinking about what you said earlier - did the DHB shoes have holes for both 2 and 3 bolt cleats? Were you using MTB cleats on them?

I only ask because Shimano do a kind of hybrid mtb-road cleat with rubber 'wings' that you can walk on. See here

Crank Bro's also do the same sort of thing for their quattro road pedals. Not sure if that helps solve the problem?

Oooooooh thanks very much, they look like a vast improvement from the current situation! And yes, the DHB ones do have both 2-and 3-bolt holes.

    Hurrah!

    *goes off to order*

Stupid question: why not have same pedals on both bikes?

And how come LiT's sudenly rich and lashed £4k on some wheels, given her previous upper limit seemed to be £250? City Bonus?!?!?!?!!?!?

It's just a hill. Get over it.
