Mavic Aksiums:

Shimano R550:

Fulcrum Racing 7:

Shimano R560:

I dont know which of the above sets would be the best for the money? I'm hoping to choose one that will be as reliable as my Open Pro's where in terms of never coming out of true.

Are the Shimano wheels strong and good enough for long training rides?

Thanks
Will.

they are all good - choose the cheapest, or choose the one you like the name of. No one can guarantee that a wheel will ever go out of true...

I've been researching and it appears spokes for the R560 are really expensive?

I don't know what I want, my budget is 100 quid really, looking all over, pulling me hair out, I want something that is either same or faster than my current wheels and is as reliable.

The R560's and or R550's like good but the spoke issue is abit off putting.

I'm abit weary of Shimano wheels, I had a set of RS10's and I did a ride on it, around 160 miles, towards the end about 2 miles, a spoke snapped, might just be one of those things but maybe the ride took it's toll on the wheel.
  • it's a big gamble with whatever you buy.

    I've sent you a PM.

Don't rush into buying anything, the offer is still there to try mine.

What is wrong with your current wheels, fairly sure that some OK hubs laced to open pros would be better than the wheels you mention.

The rims are coming to the end of there like and my old bicycle's wheels are cheapo and wont last 5 mins, so I want to put the Open Pro's coming to the end of there life on my commuter, the back is worn, the front is okish, so I can just use the front brake as it's all flat so they should last on my commuter.

decision time - if I had to choose any of those, I would go for the Mavics. I would have chosen the Fulcrums, but I don't like the idea of red wheels...

I like red wheels as it goes with my bike, although they do look abit overwhelming, there is one with black on too.

    Seen some reviews.

Dunno if single eyelet is bad?

Some people have said the rims became badly scored and worn out after 2 months.
Apparently they are heavy, don't know how heavy they are in relation to my Open Pro wheels on Tiagra hubs though?

And the Fulcrum apparently has a loud freewheel.
Not bombproof enough compared to competitors
Apparently heavy, although same as above with the weight in relation to my Open Pro's, if they are lighter then it's fine.

I have both Aksiums - albeit the older, heavier '07 model - and Racing 7s on my Allez and if I had choose one set to keep it'd be the Mavics.

I don't think he'll believe you, you recommend the slow and weak Tricomps  Only lasted him a couple of weeks :D

If I decided to just buy new rims would it be possible to re use the current spokes?

If its the same rims, then probably yeah. Otherwise - I doubt it and it may not be worth the effort.

How old are your other wheels ? My wheels last years.

My Open Pro's where new in August, done about 2000-3000 miles.
  • How about some Shimano RS20's?

Perhaps a little over your budget but worth including in your list?

What the hell have you done to them then ? I've Open Pros going back years. I'm not a big mileage rider but they'd have about 4000 miles a year on them.

Cant see how they're failing after 2k ?

The rear rims are concave, breaking performance is suffering.

You could a bike shop to lace up a new rear rim. It's pretty trivial to do if you use the same kind of rim, and wouldn't cost that much. It's definitely worth doing if your hubs are ok.

But I went to a bike shop, they said they'd have to replace the spokes so I aint going there and said with labor it would be expensive.

If I don't win those bontrager race lite wheels, which I presume are good? They seem it, I'll go open pro again.

I don't see why you won't just go for the R550s.....

Shimano might make crap groupsets, but the wheels are pretty good

Because the spokes are apparently expensive and a git to get hold of.

I might have a look at em again, re evaluate em.
  • You could just swap your Garmin for my Race Lites......... I'll even leave my Pro 3 Race tyres on.........
