With a bit of luck they'll improve signage to advise runners & dog walkers to avoid the trails
it still takes a bit of common sense, which most of the walkers don't seem to have
  • Hi,
I maybe posted too soon last week, as I had a blast over there on Saturday and was really disappointed by what they have done over on the blue section. So you scoot down from the centre road where the blue starts and its all still good, but when you get to the gate at the bottom of that section, you know, the clearing part, and you turn back on yourself up the little steep section, all of the good technical slippy stuff and ditches etc have all been filled in with 2 feet of coarse chips!!
This has spoiled much of that section for me as I liked the long ditch which was always slippy and a challenge to stay on. If I head over again I think I will head to the other non-official lines. Shame really :(
  • i had a look today and had a bit of a chat with some riders and the council guys who are doing the actual work.

it doesnt look too bad, although it needs an awful lot of work still and will need an awful lot more when its officially finished. I hadnt realised the trails were so short. the bit i was at today is only a couple of hundred yards long, maybe a 20 second blast. I made a couple of suggestions about what should andshouldnt be built on it, but this is something that needs to be properly thrashed out later. Im all for having as many jumps and bumps on it as possible, but stevie, who has been instrumental in getting these changes made at all, wants it more natural and flowing.

if it were 5 times as long then I would agree, but as it is so very short then a bmx style course would work better I feel.

me and marinman were having a rant about that section aswell. ruined i think is a better word. :x

but that new trail will be very good when it's completed

**if you are down looking at the new trail. don't ride it, there are uncompacted jumps and berms.**
  • yep the uphill section of the blue is far too slow and easy now, still tiring as f**k but
  • Hi JC spoke to you today down at the trails. i personaly agree that flow is not the most important in this case i feal that the two pumps that you suggested should be put in place and some work is needed on the dranage ditch. it was suggested that you could make it a roll in and then launch out or it or roll out inorder to keep the flow.
however i will be happy if they just complete the trails.

    sean
    (apologise for bad spelling)
  • i think the pumps are a good idea and although stevie thought they would kill the flow i disagree, i also think they could put a bit of north shore over the drainage ditch, may work.
  • yeah i had suggested a bit of northshore with a sort of arch in it that would alow u to be fired up into the air, but i was told that it would be to expencive to build.
  • the double set is the best way to deal with those stumps I reckon. if the trail wasnt so tight and fast then they wouldnt be as much of a problem off the tabletop. I dont want to land and instantly have to correct my line so I can take the berm on the only line its possible to ride out of and still hit that little drop off, because i will have to correct my line again to hit the next berm.

there is another possible line to the left of the bigger stump, around the sapling tree and directly into the berm. its a bit tight but if you have the nerve for it then theres no reason why there shouldnt be a jump on it.

I like this idea. maybe a see-saw, but it would have to be quite long at the front so you werent riding uphill stright off it.
  • a see-saw would definately be interesting i like the sound of it, however would kill the flow stevie is looking for and many people wouldnt ride it, it is a public park after all and a lot of the people that ride their are families and children
  • on the plus side though a see-saw would put doggwalkers off that part of the trail :D
  • if they could put a wooden bridge in that would be realy good but it would be even better if they could do that and have a see-saw next to it for the more confident riders.

  • i think sean may have found the answer there
  • the trail effectively dies out of the ditch though, theres no way to ride it with a flat bottom, which it apparently has to keep, and maintain any sort of speed.

short of building some sort of bridge over it, its going to be a suicidal transition to flat bottom to transition type wheel breaker.

  • but anyone less confident would complain about a see saw as there wouldn't be any alternative. would there?
  • docker0141 if you had read my previous post you would have seen that i had sugested to have a see-saw on one side and a bridge next to it so that you have an alternitive.
  • ah i thought u meant just have a see saw

I dont understand all these complaints about it not being suitable for families - its designed as a black run, not a blue or green run. i think it should be full of tech features.

  • i think its more that if you are to fall and get hurt then who is held liable for your accident. but if they took my idea and combinded it with JC's then it wouldn't be a problem as you had the choice to chose the line you wanted to take.
  • but if they took my idea and combinded it with JC's then it wouldn't be a problem as you had the choice to chose the line you wanted to take.
thats the same idea as at the end of the red run, you have the option of the technical log thing or the route round the side.

The log's dangerous in my opinion. The ramp up to it is far too slimy and I've seen far too many people fall off it. In fact I dont think I've ever seen anyone make it over it.

If any of you are talking to the people involved in the trail building, it might be worth asking for some sort of bike wash facility. Nothing fancy, just a tap with a short bit of hose attached. It could be located anywhere in the park. The trails do get exceptionally muddy in winter.
  • is there a tap at the stableyard? i think there might be, so perhaps thats somethign to look in to.

i like the bridge idea, but it would have to be very narrow to allow room for a seesaw too.

although this is supposed to be the black run, a few mongs will try to ride it at least once, kill themselves and thier bikes and blame somebody else. it only takes one of them to cry like a baby and sue the council for everything to go horribly wrong.

ive been thinking about an alternative to the seesaw/bridge idea. if the landing for the step down was mellowed and carved like a halfpipe then there would be no flat bottom issues and there would still be the possibility of a step up to get out of it, plus you can carry your speed better through it.

it would mean building a railway sleeper bridge over the drainiage ditch then piling dirt and hardcore on top of it. its a fair bit of work but it can be done if we get enough shovels and willing hands.
  • something like this, but not as crappily drawn is what I have in mind

There's a tap and a hose at the back of the police rec centre. Unfortunately there's no handle on the tap so it can't be turned on!
  • dont you own a spanner?
