well done for your so called trail "improvements" to pollok park if they can even be called that.

1) removed a perfectly good section of northshore and replaced it with gravel

2) ruined a set of jumps by puting gravel on them

3) ruined countless numbers of turns by dumping gravel on them

the gravel isn't even compacted it's just loose lying on the trails

one berm on the red trail that was "improved" with gravel caused an injury

Ouch, was it really meant to be improvments?

They obviously never asked anyone who knows what they are doing in such a context. DOH!
  • not only that they think taking a dump truck along the trails is ok aswell
  • Yeah I took a wee detour through the trails on the way home from work last week and the "repair work" they've done is actually downright dangerous. The piles of gravel that they've dumped on the trails are lethal as you're flying along then all of a sudden you hit a pile of deep, loose gravel that either grabs your front wheel and slows you right down or throws you off balance meaning you lose control. :?

To be fair it's nothing to do with Glasgow Council as they've outsourced the parks and leisure stuff to an outside contractor but good luck trying to get anything done.
  • If its outsourced its still everything to do with the council, it doesnt outsource the responsibility and duty ;)

Has anyone complained to the council itself?

i live in pollok and havent riddenn the park trails yet. doesnt look like i will at all now.
  • were going back at the weekend with a shovel to try and fix what they have done so if it's any worse then there is gonna be another serious rant

I haven't ventured out that way and probably won't. Looks like poor conditions.

By the way, You sure you just weren't trying to show off in front of the camera??
  • so showing of for the camera means going over the handlebars, smacking of the second berm and rolling down the hill? :?

I went to hit the berm at the same speed that i usualy do. my front wheel got caught in the loose gravel and spun the bars 180. i flipped over the bars and landed on the next berm down, sliding for a few yards. as docker says its not the kinda thing i would do to show off.

Well Pete, in true Glasgow style I had a wee chukle at your misfortune.

We've all been there face down in the mud, all our friends laughing while you try pick yourself back up while hiding the pain as best you can right before we make our laim excuses. Your just the lucky guy who was caugh on camera.

I can only assume they've put the gravel there to try and fill in the braking bumps on those turns.

It's not the first time shoddy work has been done on the trails but I'm not sure who actually does it i.e. does the park ranger just go round and dump gravel on bit's of the trail that are worn or damaged (which is the most likely scenario)

The problem with the trails in Pollok is the fact they're not used that often so there's no "scene" and the people involved with the maintenance don't get any upkeep.

The parks in a right state at the moment as they're felling a lot of trees with a lot of heavy machinery tramping through the woods tearing up the ground and also on the paths dragging a lot of mud and debris onto them. A 7 foot long, two foot wide tree trunk was dumped across the path that runs along past the river, behind the police dog school.

Bearing in mind that this is a Sustrans National Cycle route, I was cycling home from work one evening and came round a corner to find this tree lying across the path and narrowly avoided crashing into it.

It took them 3 weeks to remove it...
  • we were there today and i have to say they have been making improvements. some parts are still a mess, blue trail downhill (where the northshore used to be) but the red jumps have been improved.

there has been a new trail added aswell :D down the middle of the blue trail, but still needs work done to make it rideable.
  • i wouldnt say the blue downhill is a mess, i'd maybe even say i prefer it, the uphill is a joke but and although they put in a nice looking juo at the end of the red straight its still slow as f**k with all the loose stones before it. however the fact that that jump wasnt finished at the weekend but now has been suggests they might not be finished the rest of the trails yet.
  • by "juo" i ment jump. should read things over before posting them.
  • the building seems to be sub-contracted, as they had a huge lorry filled with gravel and a wee dumper, and the worker did not have GCC uniforms on. however the trails are getting better and the jumps are getting bigger however they still dont have landings.
  • i think if they keep working as they are and put landings on all the jumps that need them the the trails should be fixed by March/April
  • I still think they are good little trails for having some practice or training on. I prefer the blue to the red side as its faster and the uphill parts are a little more technical. Plus there are lots of unofficial trails throughout the park. I wouldnt let this work put anyone off popping in for a bit of muddiness :D
  • the unofficial trails are mostly better than the official trails but watch out for dog walkers/reunners on the unofficial trails..... and the official trails :x

Just an update for the trails. Was there today and they have done a decent amount. A black run is being made between the 2 blue runs with some nice tables and jumps. The builders asked me and seandonaghy to say any features we wanted in - suggested a small step down into a step up at a ditch which the boss liked. No idea how it will turn out but returning tomorow to have a look.

  • i only live 5 minutes away, but i tend not to go near 'authorised' trails at all. too many apollo riders for my tastes, you know?

not a dig at the bikes, but the tracksuits that ride them.

true true. its a school day so there shouldnt be much about. Im on study leave so thats my excuse for not being in school. the authorised ones were pretty poor but the upgrades now make them better. dump truck tyres ruin it a little, especialy at the top of the blue but once the work is done then im sure they will be filled in

With a bit of luck they'll improve signage to advise runners & dog walkers to avoid the trails
