New Turbo Training Website

Hi

I have been building a new turbo training website which lets people play plans using an online timer which highlights beeps at you when it’s time to change steps in the plan.

Anyone can add or play plans.

I’ve also set up some stats analysis so you can keep tabs on your progress or compare yourself to others.

I have shown this to a few triathletes who like the idea. Was just hoping for some feedback.

The website is http://www.turbotraining.co.uk

Thanks

  • Interesting concept.

I design and develop web sites myself so was curious to see what you have done there.

Also getting a Tacx Flow this week so I will be signing up to your site and giving it a try.

BTW, your "Find a Plan" button at the bottom of the screen is giving a 404 error when clicked upon. 8)

Really cool concept and nicely laid out site.

I've just registered and will give it a go later in the week. :D

Looks good ! I had been using an Excel application to do much the same thing but populating the fields with the work-out data became a PITA. Nice to have it all done for me.

One thing - several HRMs (well, maybe just mine) read in BPM rather than %. It would be nice to enter a max heartrate and have the % figures displayed in BPM. I'm usually too busy trying not to keel over to do mental maths.

    Best of luck with it.

  • Interesting idea. I just found and ran a sample.

While I can see the timer - how do I see the workout details/guide/instructions? I'm not going to scroll the screen up n down while on the ergobike.

I don't have web access in my training room. Wouldn't an ap to run on a pc/laptop be better? Becomes portable then.

BTW - "Muscle building" routines for the bike?

    Good idea.

Eveyone is always looking for new sets to try out.

    Few suggestions:

Gotta change the "build muscle" to maybe "strength or power" Still a few theoretical issues with these terms but its what everyone understands that counts.

I'd include another "High Intensity" section for short intense intervals al la Burgomaster (type it in and you'll get some nice academic blurb on the physiological underpinnings of this)

Think of having a "print programme" button. I've got a nice bling turbo myself so I just enter power and duration in and off I go.... it just doesnt tell me what is coming next so after number 5 interval above MLSS I kinda forget. Some people may like looking @ the computer screen during the test etc, but like Alex there may not be access in a training room, I usually just put my eyepod on and suffer!

Get your spelling right and then speak to an internet marketting man! May be able to get some money outta the site! Us cyclists wallets are as tight as a badgers bum when it comes to paying for stuff (i.e. I wouldnt pay to register) so go after the corporate money!

Great idea. I struggle to get the motivation for longish turbo sessions.

    Issues:
The about page is editable by anyone.
On home page, view example directs you to find a plan.

As mentioned I would like HR where I can add my max & get the zones in bpm. A possible alternative could be a zones chart displayed on traning screen.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

If you register you can enter your heart rate and power zones. You can also choose the calculation which you use to compute the heart rate figure.

Above each plan is a print icon, you can then print the workouts.

Making it a stand alone piece of software is a possibility. I could maybe convert a plan into excel and use some Marcos.

The editing feature on the about page is like a wiki. So you can edit the text but no changes will be made until i approve them. It’s to encourage user generated content.

What would you like to see on the focus drop down menu? I currently have:

    -Technique
    - Cadence
    - Build Muscle
    - Strength and Power

The build muscle looks like a no. I was going to add sprints/intervals as suggested. Any more??

The menu's are collapsible at the top, click "hide-show", also, the screen automatically scrolls each time when a new step is started.

Ok. But doesn't the timer scroll up off the top of screen then? Don't you want the timer to be fixed in view and each segment below it to scroll up underneath?

As for ideas on what training to focus on, I would suggest you have a look at the primary physiological adaptations that comes from training on a bike as a good guide to what to call various session.

Hint - strength is not one of them.

Sessions should be focussed on at least one of the following primary elements of cycling fitness by developing your:

    Endurance
    Lactate Threshold
    Time Trial power
Maximal Aerobic Power / VO2 Max
    Lactate Tolerance
    Neuromuscular Power

    Anything else is just noise.

Love it - and found one for me very quickly.

Now - for the uninitiated - what does "Bgx16" etc mean? Big ring x 16 revolutions?

  • i like the concept but i dont have a i only have a speed moniter, what do i do
  • Great idea, the only thing I would improve is to have actual HR displayed when training and woah register and that's what you get - nice one I will defo be using it

oh after actually using it I think I have found one possible improvement. Perhaps you could have two timers, the overall timer you have now but another timer to show you how long you are into your current set? just an idea...

You can select which equipment you have on the search page. In your case just leave the options for heart / power or cadence monitor blank. There are plans which dont require you to have any specialist equipment. Anyone can add plans, so im sure you'll have lots of choice.

Nice site mate. I like the concept, I don't do any turbo training myself but if I did then I would defo use it. I may add a link to it on my site if you think you're going to continue supporting it.

Thanks for the feedback. Linking to it would be very much appreciated. I fully intend to help the community grow and build the number of plans. The more people that use it, the more plans that will be added and that means happy turboing people.
  • I've registered and had a poke about - nice site, good idea, lots of potential for a thriving community. The thing that strikes me on a first look is that the sessions would really benefit from a description field so that you can understand what the workout is trying to achieve. It could be a clickable field in the left box that you can hide at the top of the workout page. Just so people can add a bit of rationale.

Cheers though, I'll get out and do one or two this week!
  • Birdy247,

Really like the site and the idea behind it, I have just joined and also just submitted a plan.

One thing I would like to see would be upper and lower ranges being accepted for the values. Although the column heading does say range you can only input one value.

    Cheers,

    John.

    Thanks!
