Coccydinia and cycling

Hi,
I have been having pain in my coccyx for around three months, both sitting and cycling. I have recently been diagnosed with Coccydinia and instructed not to ride for 1 month and also to apply an analgesic gel. I am currently training for a LEJOG ride in September this year and need to continue building my base fitness and mileage. Can anyone give recommendations or advice to help me continue with riding, alternative training, saddle or seatpost changes or advice on changing my cycling position. My doctor isn't a cycling expert and could not really offer any useful advice other than not to horse ride, take long bus journeys on hard seats...oh and not to ride long distances by bike... HELP!!!

I have had a similar problem and have found that moving to a carbon seatpin and a Specialized BG2 saddle (got mine for £20 online), combined with raising the stem to the top of the steerer (only 3cm btw) greatly eased the pressure and vibration on the area and this now allows me to ride comfortably on hilly 50 milers. I think the Selle Royal ErgoGel Respiro and Athletic might be worth a look as well if you have a few quid more to spend and want to get the ICS system.0

Great, thanks for reply Crabstix. Interestingly Cycling Plus recently recommended the BG2 saddle, especially for longer rides - and for 20-25 quid it must be worth a try! Will investigate your other saddle recommendations too. Thanks for your comments ... appreciated.0

I fell backwards holding a small child in my arms many years ago and damaged my coccyx. Very painful and not much to be done but I carried out at the gym adn one day tried the back extensions thingy (where you lock your legs in position and hang over a pad that supports your hips). Something said klunk in my back, and it ached for a day or two then it was better!
Wouldn't recommend such irresponsible action to anyone else it but perhaps seeing a back manipulator - chiropractor - might help?0 -
Ouch! Sounds painful. It looks liked it worked for you though, thanks for the advice.0
