I have been with a cycling club for 3yrs not long after joining my speed increased.
But now i cannot seem to increase it any more, in the summer i ride a couple of times a week + Sunday run with the club,in Winter i substitute the weekly rides with turbo training, i don't know if i can inprove any more,i'm 60 maybe thats the reason.
Perhaps someone can give me some ideas.
Thanks

Once you reach a certain level of fitness, steady club runs cease to be of much benefit to helping you continue to improve. For example, when I ride with my club on the steady cafe run now (16-18mph av), my average heart rate is only around 60-65% of my max which is not working me hard enough to make any further progress. Consequently I only do club runs as a recovery ride or in early winter when I'm taking it easy.
Chaingangs with others of a similar ability can be a really good workout - the key is to have enough people of a similar ability level so that you are not slacking and not too stretched the whole ride. Either that or ride alone, but the point is you need to be working hard enough on each ride to make a difference.
With regard to your age, there are plenty of riders older than you that can still beat me in time trials etc - have a look at the December or January issue of Cycling Plus that had a feature on 4 older riders and how they maintain their fitness.
Perhaps a bit more info from you would be helpful:
- Do you measure or estimate the level of effort you put into each ride (heart rate monitor or perceived effort) and keep a diary or ride to a training plan?
- Do you have a definite goal other than "going faster"? While this in itself is fine, it helps if you have a specific event or target to aim at (ie sub hour 25 mile time trial)
- What sort of winter turbo sessions do you do?0 -
Anything is possible if you're prepared to put the work in

Do you draft off the other riders? If so, try riding out of anyone's slipstream to make the riding harder.0
