  • that bike was a wreck.

    she was very very lucky
  • oh just to those who think wearing a helmet whilst cycling on a road doesnt help,

my dads mate (whos name i forget) was involved in an accident whilst cycling to work he was hit by a car and was unconcious before he hit the ground but the driver and witnesses said that he landed on his head and if he didnt have a helmet he would certainly be dead

thats the story my dad say whenever i go out without a helmet on

    ...and so it continues. :)
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

you cant use one example of somebody surviving a crash with or without a helmet on and use that as the paradigm.

    a. i have crashed with a helmet on and survived.

    b. I have crashed without a helmet on and survived.

what can you draw from this?

i survived both times. it is neither safer nor more dangerous to wear a helmet.

    there is no absolute answer.

    you need to stop crashing

  • Didn't anyone notice the comment by blorg about the 'wrong side of the road' part.
If she just drifted onto the wrong side, that's just a mistake. And even so, if you just forget what country you're in, it's still a mistake, not a deliberate act of stupidity.
As to the MP3 stuff, I used to use a walkman on the road years ago, and it was never a problem, I could still hear everything going on. In fact sometimes the traffic noise was enough to drown out the music.

Nice to see the posts on here are in a better spirit than on the article.

But the importance of wearing a helmet has been drilled into her head, and Atherton hopes other cyclists can learn from her mistake.

"From now on I will never take the chance again, even if it means driving back and getting a different helmet," she said. "Obviously being a professional cyclist, I wear a helmet at all times and I urge, as this experience has taught me, that people wear a helmet no matter what, there is no excuse."

Sorry, but I'm just saying that I agree with original comments from Northwind and DaveHill on this one. I can't think of much more she could have done wrong. And it doesn't set a good example to fans looking up to the sport.

If any of us non-celebs did exactly that same thing with the same result, would we get sympathy?

    KK.
  • of course we would get sympathy its just that less people would know because as individuals were not as well known as rachel atherton

    Medical attention, of course.
    Sympathy, definatly not.

I all honesty, if I did the same thing, I would not expect any sympathy at all.
But there again, two of my best friends are paramedics, who frequently remind me of tales and adventures of many a stupid pratt. (anonymously of course!)

Like the tale of some twat or other, who was 'dared' for a bet by his drinking 'mates', to try to fit his nads into a Marmite jar (true!!) only to then go to hospital to have them 'smashed' out of it by a hammer!!

    Some friends, huh?

So that's why they're plastic now...

Slightly more on topic, I think people think she's hot cus of her personality more than anything. She has a cool voice.

of course the really ironic thing is, if she had appeared on this website without a crash and said "wear a helmet!!" no one much would have listened. now she's had an accident, and people can see that even the best can screw up, its much more likely that this will persuade people to wear a helmet...

Perversley (sp?) the opposite may be true?
Head on into a vehicle at speed and no reports of head injury? (well atleast the bits you might expect a helmet to protect?)

    Lucky lady!..

She drifted onto the wrong side of the road - head down and still managed to hit the passengers side of the truck ?? She couldnt get any more wrong side than that and still be on the road.
  • As a penance Rachel should be made to wear a Skinsuit for the rest of the year! :D

Matt, now you mention it, I noticed they changed to plastic! I will ask the next time I meet them, might be a connection.

By the way crazy kids, DO NOT TRY THAT MARMITE JAR STUNT!!

Back to the topic, with any celebrity should come a certain amount of responsibility.

One acid test I suppose, would be to imagine how you would feel if your own children 'copied' their role model, and then said "Why am I wrong? They did it!"

Her brothers must have had problems with their clasps too

It was her first time on the road and on a new bike if you listen to the video, so perhaps drifting across the road is partly understandable - it probably caught her out. Of course all the more reason to have a hat and no ipod, she was lucky and will no doubt have learned a lesson (we've all learned some the hard way.

And yes she is hot, propper potty mouth on her though

Yeah - I spotted that - damn clasps - dont you find they just break ALL the time ? ;-)

I dont buy it that its her first time on the road ? Thats just odd. And if it were - wouldnt you think - ooh bit different - maybe I'll not wear an ipod. And whats with riding with mates listening to music ? Must give that a go on the next club run...
  • :D **Pure internet speculation fueled by lager**
She was ragging it down a usualy quiet hill on a new carbon roadbike, with new superskinny tyres. Egged on by competitive brothers, all a good laugh.
Pushed it too hard into a down hill bend, drifted wide.
Massive spasm to "bottom muscle", and a slow motion moment as it became perfectly obvious why you probably should wear a helmet.
