The right road frame for a big guy!?

It depends whether it was the hard way round or the easy way round...
If it was the easy way round then I managed it on an 88" fixed gear, and you need to MTFU big time.
If it was the hard way round then I have no frame of reference...
Oh and we don't have a runway at home... I was referring to the airfield where we're based.0 -
@TN, I know Clever Pun was joking, he better be or I may challenge and beat him at an arm wrestle. I will be going back to Richmond Park to reclaim my pride.lost_in_thought wrote:It depends whether it was the hard way round or the easy way round...

I was only joking about this. I actually admire successful people (I'm not one of those "poor folk" who has never tried in life and am bitter at all those who have) even though I may poke fun.

A true scalp is not only overtaking someone but leaving them stopped at a set of lights. As you, who have clearly beaten the lights, pummels nothing but the open air ahead. ~ 'DondaddyD'. Player of the Unspoken Game0 -

Is this the Top Gear track? I ask because you mention filming for TG in another thread.

Interesting thread, I always thought 'compact' referred to the gears. I see some bikes referred to as 'Sportive' bikes, is there something different about the geometry of these bikes?
Also how much efficiency (?) or speed is lost on a cyclocross bike v a straight road bike. (i'm thinking Tricross v Allez)

If this is true. Please please please please please please please please please please LiT, I know I get on your nerves sometimes (possibly all the time) but please please please please please please please please hold an SCR race around it.....
In fact assuming that said airfield is a strip or lap, would you ever hold SCR races on it?
Just asking is all....Interesting thread, I always thought 'compact' referred to the gears. I see some bikes referred to as 'Sportive' bikes, is there something different about the geometry of these bikes?
According to Cycling plus Sportive guide a Sportive bike is a road bike with a slightly more relaxed geometry. I.e. They tend to have a longer headtube giving the rider a more upright riding position. The difference between a Giant SCR/Defy (Sportive) and Giant TCR (race intended bike).

It's not the top gear main track, that's Dunsfold http://www.dunsfoldpark.co.uk/
We are at Bentwaters http://www.bentwatersparks.com/index.html which is used occasionally for Top Gear stuntman.

I reckon you just want a new bike to put on your new wheels... in which case go for it! Use the SCR for commuting and buy a weekend Wilier!
You know you want to...
Its already a done deal. The only thing stopping me is that in my heart I know I'm not good enough for a Wilier Izoard....

I'm way too pants to merit the Focus but I love it anyway. This thread is great in a way as every single person agrees that a top bike will go faster and every single person agrees there is one hell of a diminishing return with each £100 you spend.0

Well, I got dropped by the other three that were in the park, so I am slow. It is easier with another cyclist too. Anyway, I will post it up in the proper thread later in the week.0 -
Argh! 3 1/2 pages in one day :-) Excellent thread mind you even tho it went a bit OT!
The thing I'm thinking about now is can I earn enough brownie points with the wife over the next few days to get over to RP for a ride this weekend! I'll have to check in on the correct thread for an estimated meetup time as I haven't ridden round there yet and being a bit of a sadist want to try the "hard" route............
For the expensive bike argument the way I look at it that I'm fairly quick on my SCR and would love to see just how much faster or what kind of difference could be made by different equipment, so I guess much like DDD cycling has become one of my hobbies and I'm an eager learner! I read the reviews in Cycling Plus and articles on the main site here and would love to have the finances to get a new steed but unfortunately for me family comes first so I'm going to have to get by with incremental improvements of the SCR rather then a full replacement - besides scalping expensive looking bikes is SO much more satisfying :-D0 -

Sounds like a good idea, but I'm not that blessed in the height department so I suspect there would be much saddle adjustment to do! Besides I'd also need a posh bike with SPD's to get a proper feel for it........0 -

I've thought it many times and I'll say it again. Given the fact he was ahead of us and already started powering along the Mall seeing you chase down Biondino at Freewheel - when we bumped into him - you would benefit the most from an uber bike. In fact I would love to see you on a uber bike!
You are very quick and great at sprinting/spinning. I don't think you realised how much you chased him down by, I was behind you both and amazed it was like he never even started. I'm being deadly serious here, no bombast or exaggeration. Credit where credit is due.Food Chain number = 4

Cheers dude, that was fun on the run down the mall, especially as I got caught napping and admiring the Focus! I think it was the extra face fluff that made me wary of if it was BD at first!
Also while I think about it, get that BB replaced! Mine was creaking something rotten too a while back (well before the service that kept me and it separated for 3 weeks...........) and even more so when going up hills where I was putting quite a lot of force down! Dever's ended up replacing it during the service - should only cost about £25 for a new unit plus fitting unless you have the tools (or someone is feeling generous!) to DIY :-)0 -

It's more me overworrying and being concerned about my fallibility - would I twist my foot more when really sprinting, for example? But I don't race, so balls-out sprinting is never necessary, so the eggbeaters do a fine job and they more than make up for this potential (if unproven) downside with all their upsides.0

However, we are talking sporting laps albeit around Richmond Common. And I'd hope that I'd be faster on your Focus than my SCR or the £1,250+ difference (carbon frame, wheels, tyres, durace groupset etc...) would all be for nothing.
IMHO your psychology is wrong, you are blaming a perfectly good bike on why you can't get up a hill. I think you would be better of practising some hills, getting the most out of your bike (miximum utility) - and then deciding what to upgrade to. You are no-where near the point of diminishing marginal utility from that bike.
Enjoying this thread very much. DDD you are going through many of the experiences I did after buying my first roadbike. (You want/need 2 bikes, accept it and get down the LBS). Soon you'll discover the joys of singlespeed and then you'll need 3 bikes, but at least SS generally pretty cheap.
Sewinman rather misses the point here. Those of us with rather pricey bikes are all well aware that spending £3k on an intensive training scheme would have made us faster and stronger than buying a £3k bike - but that's not the point. The point is the level of enjoyment we get from our shiny carbon steeds. I have a £800 Focus and a ££££ Pinarello - which bike gives me more pleasure - the Pinarello. It's a better bike but it doesn't make me a better cyclist, I knew it wouldn't when I bought it. It does give me hours of pleasure though and is beautiful to ride.

What an apt description, I think I'd prefer to be referred to as "compact" rather then short tho
One of the things I love about this forum is the fact that we can draw on such a large pool of experience, we have the likes of me, DDD and SM with our cheap steeds and JA, G66 and BD with their carbon bling and I find it really helpful to get advice from people that I know and can actually put some trust in! It's much more informative then some random review!
JA - Your speaking of the enjoyment of the bike made me remember a video review I watched on Youtube from competitivecyclist.com, he likened the Prince to Richard Hammond driving the F1 car in Top Gear, he felt the bike was laughing at him as he couldn't get the bike up the hill as fast as he felt he should and then couldn't believe the decent he made on the other side!0
