What you mean Box Hill has been resurfaced this year?? Looks like it has been left to ruin for years

No sorry I meant the VIllage of Box Hill.... it was *ahem* 'resurfaced'in April or May and when I rode it then gravel was pinging off my frame all over the place - not good.

Lord knows when the Zigzag road was last done - the Zig Zag is actually a private road, there is a sign just after the first hairpin - so belongs to the National Trust. I think we all need to buy lots of coffees and take out a National Trust membership in order for them to finance the resurfacing.... :?

I did notice a small headwind on the way into London today, so that means a light easterly and favourable conditions - surely time to have a pop at the 3 lap challenge, but I only have the training/commuting wheels on the bike today, so I guess a go at the weekend might be in order.

It was a bit more northerly than easterly, but yes, still pretty good conditions, was thinking about working from home tomorrow and giving it a shot...

Then you should, Jim - see if you got it all back yet (fitness-wise!)

I haven't had a go for ages, and now I have moved much further away its a 45 minute ride at warm up pace to get there now then again - 40 miles daily commuting might help - I am actually getting some time on the bike these days and my commute handily is the hour of power test except for the pesky traffic lights!

  • Can confirm that it is quite quick at the moment. Chopped a good chunk off, hopefully can do more soon.

I dont think its going to be a nice smooth surface! Its going to be the loose gravel sprayed with tar - rough, especially until the cars pack it down a bit, and then it might improve. I reckon it could slow things down. Pretty much like Box Hill a few months back until it was all swept.

    Nooo!!!!!
I just bought a shiny new frame! Don't fancy trying to get tar off the BB.

Good effort Tom on posting that time. I think all that riding with Voxegam has paid dividends.... Conditions really are better than they have been for a long time this weekend as there must be a light easterly - I can see the planes coming into land at Heathrow from the West as I look out of the window!

  • More than 2 minutes faster! Very nice wind for the climb to Richmond gate, but lots of traffic this morning.

Just a quick question - I'm planning to upgrade my wheels (currently Aksium Race), does anyone know whether I would be better off going for the lightest possible, or as aero as possible? - which is more important for Richmond Park, or is a compromise between the two best? (for budget of maybe £600-800). Thanks...

Hungryjim - mind if I ask why you want £600-800 worth of wheels if you're a commuter? For the Park, I think improvements in fitness and more rides around the Park will make more of a difference to your time. (Yes, I'm fundamentally boring/conserative when it comes to bike bling. :) )

  • Thanks boys- yes, Voxegam is far, far too quick. Hopefully I can reach my goal of sub 53 min before xmas and I might be able to keep up with him on his return from Wales!

@Vox, hope you are well mate.

Good effort Tom on posting that time. I think all that riding with Voxegam has paid dividends.... Conditions really are better than they have been for a long time this weekend as there must be a light easterly - I can see the planes coming into land at Heathrow from the West as I look out of the window!

Good question... I guess I would say that most of the cycling I do is commuting, but I have a different bike for going around the park (and hopefully some sportives in the future), for use whenever I can get some time away from the family at the weekend (I don't mean that in a bad way...). I know what you mean about fitness and I am trying to get out there as much as possible - that's where the best improvements come from!

I used to have a bike with ksyrium SLs, which just felt so much faster than the aksiums I have now but some b*stard stole that bike. - the new bike is quite highly spec'd (caad 9, ultegra) and it feels like the wheels are letting it down a bit. Maybe it's just fond memories of the old bike, but then looking up the relative weights of aksium vs ksyrium sl there is a 410g difference. Apart from the wheels, all the bits on the new bike should be better/lighter than those on the old one. (which was a caad7/ultegra from a few years ago). I've heard that weight is particularly important in wheels, and it certainly does feel less willing to accelerate, and somehow more sluggish in general. Maybe I'm just imagining it...

I've never used either wheelset, but if you used SLs before, I see why you mention the price bracket you have. Putting my cardigan and slippers back on :) , I don't think there's any need to spend that sort of money.

Fwiw, on my nice bike, I use a set of demo handbuilt Ambrosios (32 spoke) on Ambrosio hubs for under £300 with GP4000Ss and they feel great. The only thing sluggish on my bike is me. :) My commuter (alu) feels much less zippy up the hills in the Park and I'm using CXP33s on those, so nothing special, but it still goes nicely. Tbh, I think it comes down to the legs and lungs. (That's what I tell myself anyway; there's not a cat in hell's chance of me getting a nice wheelset approved by the good lady wife. :) )

Btw, sorry to hear about the bike. G!ts.

  • I think aerodynamics are much more important than weight around the park. It's really pretty flat, with just a couple of short inclines. I've lost 7kg of weight since June and I can't tell that it has made any difference at all to my times round the park for the same power output.

I've only just remembered - the park is closed tomorrow, and I was hoping to get a 3 lap ride in, it's really the last chance I have to do it for the rest of this year. Does anyone know what time the roads will be closed, is it possible to get in there and do 3 laps before it closes for the duathlon?
  • Well, I don't know the answer to my question, but I do know that 6:30am is too late, I just went there and was told no, you can't ride round even if it doesn't start till 9am. Very frustrating, I was hoping to take 1-2 mins off my best time, but I can't see another opportunity for me to do it this year :(

I hope to get in the park, but I was presuming it would be an evening effort - the duathlon has start times posted until the afternoon on the website.

p.s. tarmacexpert - that must have been really annoying getting up that early, and then being prevented from riding!

You're not kidding! Still, I'll go and do the Kingston Wheelers club run instead, I'd have had to get up pretty early for that anyway.

If you're not too far from the park I'd go earlier in the day to ask them what time you'll be able to cycle on the roads, as they have cones and railings up all over the place that could take a long time to clear away afterwards. You can get an idea from this picture:

Could do, though thought I would leave it until about 6pm....this weekend the park is ideal as it lets me get some riding in, and keeps me within 20 minutes of work if I get called in at short notice.

Enjoy the KW run - its a year since I did one! - I don't get real VFM from my membership...

Not really... besides my missus is the star who stops me from being a zombie at work these days.

Oh and CJ - I have to say that my 'decent' wheels are in a different class to my cheapie commuters, but they did take several months of 'negotiation' in order to secure the deal. After a week of commuting, putting the nice wheels on is a real treat and makes a big difference in speed, stiffness, sound, and they look cool ;)

Anyway the answer to the question of what time the park was officially open was 7pm. I went in through Robin Hood gate at about 6pm and there were a few people lapping, but they were taking down barriers, which involved disconnecting them and putting them sideways across the road for a bloke on a lorry to pick them up. No cars though ;)

How much time do you think they save over the three laps compared to your commuter wheels? I need stats if I'm ever to negotiate an expensive wheelset. :)

Why would I want you to negotiate a decent wheelset? - that would just make you faster and more of an encumbrance to my position on the table ;)

Well, um they are 300 grams lighter (more when you take into account that I have decent tyres and tubes on the good wheels), have a lower (aero spoke count), stiffer, much better bearings. I cant say what the true difference is but I reckon could make a minute's difference compared to my old wheels (which weren't that bad).

Anyway, horribly off topic. Check your PM's

Am tempted, but not enough to get into trouble: just bought a 'cross bike. :)

FYI: The entire section from Robin Hood Gate to Kingston Gate now consists of loose gravel. It ain't fun. Heading down Dark Hill, just before you reach the "out" turning for the car park at K Gate, there are two yard-long sections of 1" deep gravel. Nearly came a cropper there tonight. :?

The road from K. Gate in the direction of Ham Gate has the same surface, but I've no idea how long it goes on for.

    Next, they'll be laying cobbles.

  • Kingston Gate to Ham Gate - gravel for over half the way.
Richmond Gate down to Sheen Gate roundabout - gravel.
Lots and lots of gravel (and dust). Truly horrible. Piles of the stuff.
Would recommend (esp on 23 tyres) avoiding the park for at least a few days :-(
Hopefully they will sweep the main surfaces soon, but I'm not holding my breath...
  • There have been road signs up for a while giving notification of 4 weeks (!) of roadworks from the 7th September.

My guess is that the gravel that's there at the moment is preliminary to some resurfacing...

I got to the park this afternoon and cycled from Roehampton gate to Sheen gate only to find the gravel... Signs at Roehampton gate said that from Robin Hood to Kingston gate was closed.

This could be going on for a while...

Top of the hill, before the dip that takes you to Ham Gate. The cars had at 6:30pm already swept a clean line on that one, unfortunately even the clean line is no smoother a road than was there before, so it's still as rough as anything.

  • This morning more of the park had been surfaced with loose gravel. There were two machine sweepers going down the steep hill to Robin Hood Gate, but the rest was loose gravel, with a lot of skidding opportunities
  • Complain to the Council and ask them to stop...

There is a form on their website
    http://www.richmond.gov.uk/home/council ... cedure.htm

I went through there this morning. It's incredibly dangerous.

Surely its not the Borough of Richmond upon Thames' repsonsibility for road maintenance in the Royal Parks? Surely its the Royal Parks themselves who run the show...

And yes, I enjoyed the gravel yesterday, not.
