continuous colds

As soon as I ramp up my training (turbo, long rides etc) I get struck by a cold - its not a cold you can ride through as it makes me physically weak and affects my chest. Its not just a winter thing. I had it last summer prior to the Etape. So the question is how can I prevent this? I have tried Echinachea, vitamins, I make sure and wear the right kit, I think I eat enough fresh veg andf fruit. One consideration is calorie intake - do I need to eat more (I dont eat any more than normal during training) - if so wont I just get fat.

Maybe I'm just physically not up to it - perhaps I should consider something less strenuous like darts or snooker.

Anyone have the same problem?

RDA for vitamin C seems to differ depending on who does the research. I've seen research recomend as high as 6000mg per day for an adult male who's active. Personally i'm just over the 2000mg/day and have done so for the last few weeks, longest period since october without a cold, chest infection so might be working, not doing the running though, and the long bike rides. I would advise you to take it easy, the doc said it takes around 10weeks for the body to recover from most serious colds, chest infecftions etc, so don't push it, just do easy recovery stuff, which is better than doing nothing.

hi, you guys should know that any effect of vitamin C on the immune system was based on old junk science and has been completely discredited.

Also, vitamins from pills are often not even absorbed properly in the gut. And too much ascorbic acid in the stomach will lead to stomach damage.

I'm not sure what "research" anyone is quoting, but the only people who claim vitamin C helps the immune system are those who look at very sick people with vitamin deficiencies, or pill companies trying to sell you something.
