SiS PSP22 with Home Made Electrolytes?

I like the idea of controlling the amount of electrolytes in my energy drink. Some days will be hot. I'll sweat more. I'll need more electrolytes. Other days, maybe it's colder. Maybe I've eaten more beforehand. I'll need fewer electrolytes in my drink.

SiS Go Electrolyte sounds good because it's carbohydrate energy with electrolytes already mixed in. SiS says an 80g serving provides 76g carbohydrate, almost as good as PSP22's 99g per 100g serving. Basically they're both almost 1g of carbs per gram of serving.

Trouble with Go Electrolyte is that I can't regulate the amount of electrolytes it offers. So I thought, let's use PSP22 pure energy, then add half, 1 or 2 nuun electrolyte supplements as required. Trouble is, nuun tablets all have a compulsory flavour, whether it's Orange, Cola, Tri-berry... I can't let a mere supplement's flavour clash with my chosen PSP22 flavour. Will taste awful :(

So, shall I just use Go Electrolyte as my standard energy drink all the time, or PSP22 and add my own home made electrolyte formula? If I use Go Electrolyte all the time, is there a danger it could be giving me too many electolytes on occasion? How bad is that?

I do 2 main types of ride: 90-120 minutes, fairly high intensity, and 5 hours medium intensity with lots of climbs. Those are the situations I want energy drinks to address.

One last thing - PSP22 is described as a source of "complex carbohydrate". I like the sound of that - sustained energy provision over a longer period. Is Go Electrolyte also a complex carbohydrate source?

The carbo in PSP22 is from maltodextrin which I believe comes from maize. The unflavoured version contains just maltodextrin and no other additives. The ingredients are printed on the label.

The main electrolytes are sodium and potassium (Nuun contains these). You can get the sodium from ordinary table salt and you can get potassium from orange juice. Or you could use Lo Salt which contains both sodium and potassium.

I buy maltodextrin in bulk which the cuts the price right down and add a pinch of salt and some orange juice. I find experience is the best way to decide on what quantity of ingredients to use.

You can also of course get the sodium and potassium from solid food eaten on the ride.

  • yep - buy maltrodexin in bulk from myprotein.co.uk and save yourself a bundle (not what you asked though :) ) and you can get it in non-flavoured too

You can also buy electrolyte tablets from myprotein which you can add - i've just started doing this as the cost of nuun tablets is ridiculous - something like £35 for 40litres, whereas the myprotein stuff is about £6 for 90litres and are unflavoured. Its sodium and potassium - how can they charge so much??

    Anyway

The only downside of the myprotein tablets are that they dont disolve easily - you have to crush them up a bit yourself before you add them

Makes a load more sense as its cheaper and, as you say, you can mix up quantities of carb, protein and electrolyte as you feel.

Just to clarify here....PSP 22 is just maltodextrin and flavouring?

How dare you suggest such a thing. I think you'll find that PSP22 is actually a complete solution for all the needs of a top class endurance athlete.... :)

    From SIS

Typical Ingredients: Maltodextrin (produced by partial hydrolysis of a special variety of maize, 98% glucose polymers), Fructose, Natural Flavour, Aspartame. Original contains only Maltodextrin

You can always mix GO and PSP - for instance they do both in the Blackcurrant flavour.

Just vary your ratio of PSP to GO depending on the ride, weather conditions etc until you find what works best for you.

I also think they do a slightly cheaper flavourless PSP if you want to stick Nuun tabs or similar in

As prev posters say, maltrodextrin from myprotein.co.uk is going to have very similar benefits at much lower price

I see that myprotein also do an electrolyte powder. So....maltodextrin with electrolyte powder and some flavouring gives me pretty much PSP22...sounds a little easier on the wallet

Even cheaper buy "Lo Salt" from Tesco about a quid for 350g; and ordinary salt (even less quids) and use half and half. Both are already crushed and dissolve easily. http://www.losalt.com/chemistry.html

At what ratio should you use this with the maltodextrin?

Errr... I take about a pinch of both salts in about 750cc bottle and about two inches up the side of the bottle of maltodextrin. I may put a teaspoon of sugar in, too, or a bit of orange juice. I carry a second bottle with plain water to swill after taking a swig of the energy/salt mix. But I also take proper food with me as well. Something like a sandwich or four.
