I am appalled. He should be stripped of his commission and made to walk naked, except for a tea towel on his head, throught the streets of Bradford, Leeds, Oldham, bury, etc., reciting an abject and grovelling apology to all those offended by his thoughtless and clearly, offensively meant, remarks.
After which, he should be scourged with a cat o' nine tails and sent on a pilgrimage to Canterbury Abbey.
Anyone who says anything which leads to such a waste of newprint clearly has no concern for the environment.Organising the Bradford Kids Saturday Bike Club at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre since 1998

What a load of bollocks.
PC gone mad again. A three yearold story dragged up again.
Personally I think we shoud scrap the royal family as they have no use at all in today's world and are so out of touch with the real world.
As for Harry's comments, royal or not, they were taken out of context and were clearly not meant to be offensive and it is about time that some of the people who regard such conversations get a life and stop moaning. Everytime something like this happens they drag out the relatives on tv to comment, the local community officer of where the family lives, the muslim liason officer and so on. Is it really this newsworthy all the time. Now it has receieved so much publicity it is more likey that more yopungsters will now use the word Paki in an offensive way. How can it be offensive, it is a shortened version of Pakistani. What should we call people from Pakistan then? I have been called welshie, taffy and lots of other worse things by many people, as I am sure have so many others, but do we all complain? no.
Why should Harry be punished for saying something in his Barracks in Private (ok it was recorded and some bastard released it, they should be punished).
I do not believe there is one person alive who may have said something not PC at some time, it is just that those people would not have a trash newspaper reporting it!!
It is reports like this and the disproportionate response and positive discrimination that is making more people more right wing than they previously were. IMHO of course0 -
We don't know the context and Harry's colleague may well have been okay with his mates calling him 'Paki', or he may not, BUT anyone who says that it is just a shortening of Pakistani similar to Brit or Finn is being wilfully ignorant of the connotations of the word. It all comes down to context as well...sometimes people call me a scouser, and sometimes people call me a scouser. Doesn't look very different written down, but there can be two very different intentions behind them!0

Oi, I said that on the last page!
I had to chuckle at Oldwelshman's comment regarding Welsh folk not complaining about being called 'Taffy' or similar - I lived with a Welsh bloke at uni and whilst he was happy to dish out jibes about the English, call him Taff and he went bl***y mental! 15 minute diatribes about Anglo-Saxon oppression, Maggie Thatcher and how Offa's Dyke should be rebuilt were a running theme of that stage of my life. His girlfriend was, if anything, even worse!Personally I think we shoud scrap the royal family as they have no use at all in today's world and are so out of touch with the real world.
Completely agree.
Anyhow, my considered opinion on this particular story is that I couldn't give a monkey's fart.0 -

Bloody hell, They didn't make you pay for that all by yourself did they? No wonder your pis*ed off.
When I first heard this 'story' my first though was along the lines of- this guy is going out into a war zone- he's going to have to be tough enough to use a bit more than a little slightly-offensive-to-some language!.
I loved the MOD's 'we'll investigate' type of reply. They have to say that, it's politics, but at the end of the day these guys have got a pretty good chance that they'll have to make decisions and do their job in a way that could get themselves or their colleagues killed, or kill the enemy- they won't be very good at it if they've got to stop and consider if that's going to offend someone.
As for the 'royals' in general. imo they bring far more value than they 'cost'. Tourism, charity work and diplomacy (probably the best retort to all the ' they have no place in a modern world' arguments)0 -
charity work, granted. But so do many others.
Diplomacy? Oh yes. See content of this very thread for an example of the fine work they do. Or any of Phil's classics. I'd rather have Tonymufc as a diplomat representing us than that lot.
Tourism? Lenin attracts lots of tourists, and he's dead.
hang on a minute....
kill the lot of them, stuff them, house them in a glass mausoleum underneath Trafalgar square. All the benefits of having a living royal family, with none of the costs.0 -

Indeed, the cost is as much as 69pence per person in the UK!

From the national media. The same people who reported on the Harry story.0 -

That is cheap, and it gives me a great idea: for the bargain price of 10p per year per person in the UK (that's nothing!), I promise that me and my family will live in several massive houses, go on unimaginably luxurious holidays ten times a year (visiting the odd dignitary on the way), swan about in helicopters, make ill-judged remarks about foreigners, drink lots of gin and generally become entirely detatched from reality. Opening parliament, tapping people on the shoulder with swords and boring several million people senseless at 3 o'clock on Christmas day included at no extra cost. It's a steal!0 -
Great idea!
One thing though, can you bring in a profit of £ 135 million to give to the tax man?
I suspect there are many business that don't produce that income / cost benefit.
PS that is the profit from the Crown estate and does not include any income from charity work.0 -

Hmmm, nice try, but it's not as if the royal family takes £35m of public cash every year and magically turns it into £135m for the taxman as you imply. The Crown Estate has roughly £7bn of assets under management, so turning a profit of £135m ain't that impressive. And besides, if the royals are such fantastic business brains, why do we need to give them any money at all?
So far as I'm concerned, whether or not the royal family are good or bad for the country's balance sheet isn't really the point. What matters is that in the 21st century Britain, which is still a fairly significant global player, could have a blithering idiot as head of state simply because they're the eldest offspring of the present head of state. I appreciate that other methods of choosing our ultimate leader may throw up less than perfect results (George W has already been mentioned), but this is surely bonkers.0 -
But the elected Heads of State get the power to do things, invade various foreign countries for example, our unelected ones don't.
See the difference?Remember that you are an Englishman and thus have won first prize in the lottery of life.0 -
Whatever the rights and wrongs of Prince Harry, the Royal family and the discussion here, it actually sad that so many posts are devoted to this topic compared to the UK debt / credit crisis, Isreal / Palastine etc. Somewhat more important methinks.0
