Gatorade

tried a bottle of this today. It has no aspartame, artificial colourings etc. and the orange flavour was very pleasant, a bit like diluting juice. Anyone tried it? any comments as to it's claims of being the best isotonic recovery drink? oh, its £1.25 a bottle (500ml)

  • Yeh i used gatorade in my 2hr rides in the summer, cycling plus thought it was the best widely available sports drink (by non-widely available i mean stuff like torq energy), gatorade beat lucozade and powerade, and gatorade has little or no bad stuff in it :)

I use gatorade ( the "thirstquencher" stuff) all of the time in the summer, but not from bottles - get the big tubs of powder and mix with water in your bidons

I don't think there's much difference between one standard isotonic drink and another (as opposed to energy drinks), they all just replace sweat and so have the basic minerals (sodium, potassium etc) and a bit of sugar which is necessary to fuel the little ion channels in your gut that absorb the minerals. I keep meaning to get around to making my own to save money, but can never be bothered...

12x500ml bottles for a fiver in Woolies closing down sale. Then I sent my missus back for some more on the local Wollies' last day, and she came back with another 10 loose 500ml bottles for 35p ea....

Lance Armstrong mentions it often enough in his books so I guess he either got paid to say that or he has actually used it so can't be too bad.

i like the thirst quencher type - the blue one in particular - it reminds me of florida holidays where I like to have big bottles of it in the fridge (cos it's like 2 dollars for a 2litre bottle over there) and de-cant it into smaller bottles to take to the disney parks with the family

don't think I have actually drank it over here though..

Gatorade is the biggest selling recovery drink in the US and their equivalent of our Lucozade but as you say without all the sugars and saccharines
  • Where can I get Gatorade in powder form? Can't seem to find it on Wiggle etc.

    Cheers

I didn't realise it was so difficult to get in the UK until I did a search...

Here in Finland you can buy tubs of it in the supermarket:

These are the same as the ones pictured on the UK gatorade website under "products, powder":

I think in the States the tubs look different?

If you are buying online make sure you get the standard isotonic "thirst quencher" stuff and not one of the other gatorade products.

Strange that it appears on their UK website but is so difficult to find, almost as if it isn't marketed in the UK. I couldn't find it on any of the Eurozone shopping sites I frequent either, which suggests that they tightly control the distribution... They probably want to make as much money as possible selling the bottled stuff before they make the powder widely available in the UK, thus deliberately wasting packaging and energy for transport as well as fleecing you. I think it's now owned by pepsi...

P.S. I think the lemon & lime powder in the bag on the link that doyler78 posted is the same stuff I get in the tubs. The advantage of the tubs is that you can use the top to measure out the right amount and it is more convenient for storage / dispensing.

From what I heard its because the company that has the distribution licence in the UK for the diluted product doesn't have a licence for the powdered stuff.

I sometimes use the Japanese energy drink Pocari Sweat in powdered form in my water on a ride. I find it very good.

I get a very cheap form of sweat - it runs down my face every time I ride :lol:

Yes, not a particularly delightful name, but it seems to work well
