Complete lack of commitment, young Greg, why not a set of gloves in red, blue and black?

Today was day 1 back at work, day 1 back on the bike. Still a bit cautious and still riding one gear down, but I felt better than I did pre-Xmas. The immediate concern is to figure out whether riding makes it worse. We'll see.
Gloves: I had fancied them for a while but couldn't justify the expense, and I had a pair of ok PX gloves. Then they got worn and stinky, Condor were selling off the 08 gloves at £20 off, and I had a credit note I couldn't figure out what to spend on.
Today I wore the inners and lobsters going in - way too hot, and the inners and outers on the way home - plenty warm enough. The outers alone would have been fine. And they're completely windproof and so far waterproof. The only downside is that I tend not to use two fingers to brake, so the lobsters were giving me a bit of trouble. But no big deal.
So they work, and I reckon they'd be good down to -10 or -15 or so. The big issue is coughing up that much for gloves. Had I not had a happy coincidence of factors, I probably would still be looking at them in the window. Now I've got them, I don't regret it.0 -

Oh, but apart from the gloves it was all new 09 kit bought last autumn. I replace everything annually, obviously0 -

Top tip: take melatonin at bedtime, and not at 3.30 in the morning. They last longer than 4 hours, it seems.
Top tip: don't take melatonin at all. Wine is a far more effective jet lag remedy...

But y'see, I'm trying to have a spell off the booze for a while, having used it pretty liberally as a medication before, during and after Xmas (in addition to the usual Xmas booze).
Plus, it's hard to stay asleep when the kids come charging down screaming that there's a mouse in their room (which there was)...
Plenty of things get worse with age. You'll discover this for yourself one day, young lady.0 -

Pah, excuses excuses.
I'm trying to cut down the drinking too - had forgotten until a couple of hours ago that I had a couple of cases of red winging their way to my door. Ah well. I'll do it next month.0 -
Looks like there are very few gilets in these lists - is this because they're as useless as they look? i.e. why would you use one instead of a jacket?0

Ahem - I have a couple.
And I second what jonginge says about them, although I do sometimes use them for a commute; more usually the ride home when the temperature has dropped off a bit suddenly. Mine are windproof on the front and vented on the back, so work quite well with a bag.0 -
My new Gore Phantom jacket turns into a gilet. Looking forward to trying that one out.FCN 2-4.

A gilet is typically a windbreak at the front and a string vest at the back. Its not a "boil in the bag" like a jacket, but its very helpful for layering. I also find it is a very useful block of fluoro yellow for most of the dark/wet/cold months (everything but summer) for my commute.0 -
I have a gilet, very worthwhile, just some extra windproofing when a jacket is too much, as mentioned above mine is solid on the chest but very vented on the back.
They're also usually very compact to carry if you suspect you may be out late and need a little extra heating for the ride home.0 -
I have not got any cycling specific clothing  I would like some but it all seems a massive rip off to me. £45 for a pair of shorts!? I just use old shorts and t shirts and stuff.0

True - the winter break from cycling seems to have solved that problem. I am back on the bike now so we shall see (well not 'we' actually - me).0 -

As a mere inorganic chemist I look at the structure of melatonin and think - for starters the amide group is going to fall off.0 -
Always Tyred wrote:This is a bit off topic, but is there any evidence at all that a hormone, when ingested, can survive your stomach acid and all of the enzymes in your digestive system, get into your blood stream and find its way into your brain across the blood brain barrier?

It's a sub-lingual delivery (you let it dissolve under your tongue, for the uninitiated). The acid/enzymes in your mouth must give it a hit, I guess, but that said, it does seem to work; I've used it on planes (at non-sleeping times) and it's knocked me out, and I made the mistake of using it at 3.30am, and it seems to last longer than 4 hours! I felt like death dragging myself up at 7.30.0
