I hope it disappears by 8am. I do not want to catch the train when this is classic trains-gone-to-pot weather. :?

    ARGH!
This couldn't have happened at a worse time! I was really looking forward to riding in this morning but don't think I'll be able to bring myself to take the bike out, especially since I've got new tyres and wheels on it!
Looks like I'll be getting the train, especially as considering where I am meant to be heading for normally means a few hills which I'd rather not attempt in icy conditions :-(

No snow in this part of Brizzle :( Mind you I'm walking today as I haven't put the commute pedals back on the bike.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Well it did make me think twice this morning, outside my house was treacherous, a thin layer of snow on top of ice. I kept going though, thinking that the main roads were well gritted, you could see the salty sheen on them yesterday.

Thankfully I was right ,the A56 into Manchester and the A34 out of town were brilliant, completly ice free. Different matter when I got into work, I had to walk the last 200m having learnt my lesson from my pre Christmas fall!! There is a fair bit more snow in South Mcr than North Mcr.

Was beautiful though with all the snow and the sun coming up, one of those rides I will remember for a while.

The ONLY reason I haven't ridden in today is because I have Man Flu am short of breath and so dehydrated when I wake up my tongue is so dry curling it actually breaks the skin and makes it bleed.

Honestly, snow in London bah! If your route only involves back roads then yes don't cycle but if the route is mostly main roads there are so many cars these days as long as you set off after 7.45 most of the snow on the main road will be gone.

The journey back - depending how late - may see you negotiating ice and that's a real problem.

  • Sheet ice everywhere this morning! Luckily I can choose a route that's entirely traffic free until I'm right in the city centre where there's no ice.

I imagine on days like this being a mountain biker gives you a slight advantage over the roadies 8)

no bike for me this AM. I could see snow that had settled in the gritted road

And I'm not in the office tomorrow so I won't be back on the bike until Wednesday. That should make for an interesting experience :P

The section between Roehampton-Robin-Kingston Gates was shut off this morning, I guess due to the dangers of Broomfield and Dark Hills in this weather. Here's a picture through the centre of the Park this morning:

driving to work today i was sliding all over the road til i got up to the main road (about 1.5 miles). Would have been fine on the main roads on my bike but I doubt I'd have made it past the end of my road!

I didn't cycle today but I wish I had because of the farce at Clapham Junction. Here's the full story for anyone with a bit of stamina:
    • Arrive at Clapham Junction and head to platform 2 for train to Kensington Olympia.
    • Train cancelled but there's another one from Platform 16 so head back.
    • Wait on platform 16.
    • Train doesn't arrive on time.
    • Announcement says to cross over footbridge to platform 17 to catch an even later running train going same way.
    • Just get down onto platform 17 when announcement says that train is actually going the opposite way and to return to platform 16 instead.
    • I return to 16 but a lot of people stay on 17, hoping the extra-late-running service will still be first to arrive.
    • Several minutes pass.
    • Station staff on 17 tell everyone still on there that they should cross to 16 as that train will definitely be the first to arrive.
    • Platform 17 empties as everybody crosses to 16.
    • Train arrives at platform 17, everyone looks around.
    • Announcement says to cross to platform 17.
    • SNAFUBAR
    • Station announcer dies in painful accident.*

*May have been added for artistic effect.
  • OK I admit I chickened out this morning and took public transport
It looks like tomorrow is going to be clear but colder with a maximum temp of 0, should I
    A - MTFU! ride in
B - Roads will be even icier...stick to the trains
C - Turn up the central heating and work from home in pyjamas?

A light layer this morning in Brighton. The only real problem was that a lot of pedestrians had swapped to walking on the cycle lanes instead of the pavement. :(

It's due to there either being a clear lane due to the bikes creating one or the red tarmac they use on some of them which makes the snow melt faster than the flagstones!

    Sorry, in English...
A - Man the F**k Up and ride to work on my bicycle tomorrow
B - Chicken out and take the train in again
    C - Work from home

I admit I don't know what SNAFUBAR means either.

I took a little XC ride on the MTB this afternoon and even with two pairs of wool socks, cycling tights under combats, a technical top, wool jumper, jacket, buff, winter gloves & hat I was still freezing cold apart from the up hills

Tonight was officially the coldest ride I have ever had.

Had to go to the bike shop on the way home for new brake pads. My route home from there involves a mile across the park. The roads were fine (apart from the traffic - didn't have my comp but judging by the pedestrian keeping up with the queue, avg speed = 2mph) but as soon as I turned onto the park my tyres starting crackling. Couldn't see any ice cos the park's unlit and my front light's not powerful enough, but the crackling continued all the way across.

Over the other side, where there's light from the road alongside, I could see clearly the sheet ice on the path, and I had a bit of a slip when I stopped to go through the gate out of the park.

    Could be fun tomorrow

SNAFUBAR is an amalgamation of two established acronyms that I just invented and now own the copyright to (you both owe me 50p, incidentally).

Both are US Air Force (I believe) terms and go like this:

SNAFU = Situation Normal, All F*cked Up.
FUBAR = F*cked up beyond all recognition.

I'm glad I did, (i did avoid an ungritted hill on the way in though).

Main roads were fine, and very little traffic either.

I did notice one road closed.

Ah, Jamey, I too have played this game during my not-under-my-own-steam-commuting days... I think it's a government ploy to get the nation to be more active - big brother was watching you and knew you didn't cycle today and therefore for your own good was making you run between platforms mwahahahahahahaha
