DOUBLE POST - Just kidding

Your killing my already fragile social life.

Stop messing with rodents and buy a nice cluster of Linux servers with huge and very expensive load balancers in front so that we who pay nothing for using this service can continue to post our utter tosh & dribble.

Yep. It could take a few weeks to sort this one out, unfortunately.

You bu88er! As I was googling for comparethemeerkats.com I thought "This must be a wind-up.", then I saw the link and thought "Oh, this might be interesting.".

    Then I clicked on it....

Yep. It could take a few weeks to sort this one out, unfortunately.

If that's the case I think you'll be losing a lot of traffic. It's getting progressively worse - today the problems started at 3pm and are ongoing now at 9pm. It's never been this bad before.

I know. I'm pushing as hard as I can to get it sorted but it's not a simple matter.

Now now Stephen, You're not only undermining you're argument with a complete lack of apostrophy useage but you're recommending a solution that has no formal support, I'd say virtualise with VMWare and get several Windows boxes into a cluster in a data centre somewhere that'll do the trick

That second "you're" should be "your".

    ;-)

The first one should be lower case.

Oh, and while we are at it, a full stop instead of the comma before the word "I'd". Unless of course you meant to use a colon. Lol. A full stop at the end would not go amiss either.

Too many simultaneous log-ons, insufficent server capacity and noone on the team can do load balancing properly?

Simple solution - give us our Cycling Plus forum back, on it's own box and with its own backend.

Everybody will be happy. Even your advertisers. They will be able to target their audience accurately again.

Your misguided quest for world domination is doing you more harm than good. It's time to wake up and smell the coffee before your quality posters, and with them your quality content, bugger off.

    <edit>

Tell your bosses at Future that their strategy is pants. the "radar" brand is meaningless given that punters and clients in one interest area are going to have very little interest in any of the others. I only recently found about about the other "radar" websites and felt slightly demeaned, with Future trying to make us all part of a larger sausage machine, and partly amused with the ridiculousness of it all. The whole thing shows a lack of understanding of our hobby and the individuality of those involved in it, and no doubt of the others as well.

Nope. If only it were that easy.

Having the old forums back is not going to happen. Despite what you think, they weren't commerically viable in themselves. They needed to be part of a complete site, which they are now.

BikeRadar as a whole is doing very well in terms of traffic. Roughly doubled in size since this time last year and January 09 was up there with our biggest months ever. That's surprised even me.

I'm also surprised that you found out about the other radar sites. You only have to read them if you're interested. No-one's forcing you!

Yeah sorry, it was a bit of a rant. I guess if it has to be more commercialised to survive then so be it, but it's not the same. Traffic may have increased but, with it, so has the proportion of banal noise. Perhaps it's time to quietly drift away.

There's plenty on the site to read outside the forums, which is what we're trying to encourage. No other cycling site has as many editorial product reviews as BikeRadar - that's something we couldn't offer on the old sites.

Also, the old forums had their share of banal noise. Some of that disappeared when people left to other forums, then reappeared when they got bored and returned. We can't dictate what people post on our forums unless they break the rules. But we can dictate what goes in the editorially controlled sections, so you can at least take your pick.

You're right., of course. I was always an avid follower of Cyclingnews during the racing season but now I tend to read the race coverage on Bikeradar.

One question: How does combining all the forums into one brand identity fit with keeping the distinct identities of the printed magazines? Surely if Cycling Plus is a good brand on the news stand, it's good enough for its own branded forum, rather than being consumed by Bikeradar? Or can we expect Bikeradar Road, Bikeradar All Terrain, and Bikeradar Race titles appearing soon in our local W H Smith?

Is the Techradar macrosite run on the same servers as Bikeradar? It looks pretty similar and it also had slowdown issues when I was checking it a few days ago.

I never read the Bikeradar front page - it always looks a bit dumbed down or "childish". Cyclingnews still seems a far better source for information and I'll continue using it.

Bikeradar refuses to fill my screen - I see more in the white bands on the side of the screen that I do actual information........cyclingnews manages to fill the screen though.... :?

Seems to have gone bad again last night and this morning, pages timing out, article not found etc.

    Very frustrating :(

Restricted width websites are a good thing from a usability point of view. Legibility becomes an issues when the length of lines of text becomes too long...

And it's just as bad when the text only fills a narrow band in the middle of the screen......

Without wishing to repeat myself, this is now the worst site of any (not just cycling) that I visit in terms of page loads (many with FAR higher traffic). It started out a few months ago being slow in the early evening, but now can be just as bad at any time of day.

Yesterday (23rd March) is a good example. Slow loads or freezes at 9am, 2.30pm, 4pm, 7pm and 9pm. In other words, a large part of the day.

Can someone from BR please tell us what is going on to fix this, rather than just responding with the usual "we're going to do something at some unspecified time in the future".

EDIT: Hah, it's just happened again when I tried to post this (at 8.30am)!!

We've actually fixed part of the problem, which was to do with the routes section and Bikely. But we are still waiting on the forums to be fixed, which is a big and time consuming problem.

Don't worry, I want it fixed as much as you do. Yesterday was (unsurprisingly) our busiest day ever.

Erm... I was on Bikely this morning and it was loading at glacial speeds - worse than BR at it's worst. :(

That's actually a forum problem, not a Bikely problem. But yes, it is still a problem.
