How come everybody has turbo trainers and not exercise bikes?
Because if you have an exercise bike u dont wear your beloved bike and its tyres out.

An exercise bike has a different position to your road bike, they're generally designed for the general public so give a sit up and beg position rather than the long and low position we're used to.
A decent exercise bike is much more expensive than a decent turbo.
An exercise bike takes up much more space than a turbo.
Pretty difficult to take an exercise bike to races to warm up.
You already have a bike, so why not use it?

All good points, wish I had thought of them when I bought my exersize bike. Also, its a magnetic one, its not even close to my road bike for smoothness, the expensive ones in the gym are better but still a way off a proper road bike!

Wanna buy my exersize bike!! :)

Its the sitting position I hate on the exercise bikes at the gym and the big cushioned seats which are obviously designed for those with massive a*ses. Saying that, the gym I go to has just invested in some new spinning bikes on which I can get an almost identical riding position to my road bike .......................but they did cost £600 each which is far more expensive than a decent turbo and the cost of a conti training tyre.

Those proper spin bikes look great imo. If I had a spare 1200 quid and space I'd buy one.

The best "normal" exercise bikes I've ever tried were the reclined ones tbh.

I use the spinning bikes at my gym at least once a week, and find them ok. The variable resistance thing is quite good, but I do hate the big seats (made for women not fat people I think). No dead spot as well, which is nice. I would buy one - there are some really good ones with power, proper positions etc out there, but they are really expensive compared to the "bike and turbo" option.

I bought a really decent one last year... end of season demo unit for next to nothing (£70). 10 programs plus custom settings etc. I use it dailly now clocking up 10-20 miles when I can't get out for a ride.
Customised my programs so as to take just a bit longer to do 10M that my "self test" route takes and burns almost 1/4 more calories than actual ride. (ne free-wheeling)
Because the program is variable (like spin classes) I can set it to simulate my regular ride. Actually quite amazing what a difference it has made.
Set up in TV room. All the better to watch CSI... than sitting on my couch watching telly.
