Does anyone know if there are timing standards for this event as cannot see them on the website.

Also, any written route details, just in case i get lost and can maybe make a note of the crucial left/right turns , as i don;t know the area.

they are supposed to be handing out maps at the start but not sure how detailed they will be. I have gone over the course in two sections over the last two weekends and it is very hard to follow using the printable map on the web site. there are alot of small turns on the course, i got a bit lost even though i am local.
Oh and another two things to be wary of is that some of the roads are very narrow and in poor condition specially the section from west hoathly to ardingly. Also this section has a 20% hill to deal with. just about got over in a 38 x 28, anything higher and your walking.

I'm sure the course will be well sign posted, do people really look at the maps during sportives??? I also doubt there will be set out standards as they seem reserved for the bigger (100 mile+) sportives.

It looks like starts are in groups of over 100 at a time, should be good for getting into groups.

Is this Kidds Hill (the wall)? I've been trying to get a figure for this hill, but figured it must be about 20% I'll be down to 39x25 so it looks like I'll be walking, although I have managed 16% in 42x25 so I'll give it a bloody good go.

Does anyone have a figure for Groombridge Hill as well, I've heard that's a bit of a beast as well.

I'm not into collecting hills by the way, this is part of my training for the FWC and it would be nice to be able to guage these hills against some of the monsters I'll be facing in the lakes.

no the lane between West Hoathly and Ardingly is Cob Lane; I can state (as the organiser of the only other ride to do it) that it's easily doable in a 39 x 26, just don't even think about attacking the bottom it bites, and leave some back for the last RH bend but it's more or less over as soon as you turn the corner

Kidds Hill's not as steep just long and intimidating as you can see it all the way up.

yes it was cob lane i was talking about, worse thing is that its towards the end of the course while kidds hill is in the middle.
Starting to look forward to it now, lets just hope for some decent weather. I'm hoping to be showing a bit of shin for the first time this year
  • There will be a maps for all of the rides - but more importantly there will be loads of arrows.. even more than the last August Burgess Hill Rumble event.

Good weather has been booked but it still hasn't confirmed it will be turning up on the day.
So Ricardo H make sure you bring some leggings.

All the hills are really easy I had no problem getting up any of them in the car yesterday :lol:
None of the hills are as hard as some of the monster climbs in the Lakes but -- don't start fast on any of the routes on this SRS Events ride as you might just find yourself blowing up if you do.

I can't see many people doing the Classic ride very fast.

Thankfully there are good feed stations at village halls to rest and eat ready for the next leg of the journey.

Signing on starts at 7.45 the smell of bacon coming from the canteen should get the gastric juices flowing - make sure you have lots to eat before you start the ride.

Weather forecast says its going to be dry -- and if you believe that you'll believe anything.

    COME PREPARED :!:

The five day forecast has a nice big sunshine for Sunday...hills are less steep when the sun is out right? :?

Well after our August event being so very wet it only seems fair that we should have a nice Sunny day on the 15th for the Springtime Classic Cyclosportive.

Our constant worshipping of our sun god idol in the office is looking to be working.

    Blimey fellas that was tough.

Thanks for a great morning, really friendly, well organised, and clearly signed (making missing the Forest Row check point, even more suprising!).
Basically all you could ask for in a sportive, except for the hills, followed by more hills, then Cobb Lane, which was just rediculous  .

Thanks again, and keep up the good work.

Good work chaps, that was a cracking route, a real early season test.

The Hills weren't as bad as I was expecting other than that really steep bugger about 50 miles in  Does anyone have a name for that one? All adds to the fun though

    Cheers fella's

Went for a ride around Ashdown Forest today from Orpington and stumbled across this event at around 11am. Seemed like a decent turnout. My friend and I had to help out one girl though with a wonky cleat, she was a bit disheartened by things, hope she got round ok :)

Yep .. a toughy managed to get up ok.

I finished with a 'Silver',. which was a bit surprising as there were no published standards for the event.

I`ve been a long term lurker on this site but i decided to enter this sportive partly because i live in Burgess Hill and because i recently bought a secondhand road bike 5 weeks ago.Being my first sportive i didn`t quite know what to expect but i must say i was impressed with the organization of the event with a clearly marked but challenging route for the Classic ride.It certainly was glorious weather which made the ride more appealing.I managed a time of 4hr 28min which i was very happy with.So what times did all you others manage?
  • Wonderful weather, great course. Thanks chaps! Did a fair old ride to and from the HQ too so I'm truly fecked tonight, but all good fun.
Nobody back home had better dare suggest that it's all flat in the south :)

The green-arsed bumblebee will give me nightmares tonight though...

I managed a 4:09, which gave me a gold time. It woulld be nice to see a run down of the times, are they going ot be published at all?

I'm sure I rode a few miles with you ajcherry, I was on the grey Trek Madone. That's a decent time for someone who's only been on a road bike for 5 weeks.

I finished in 4h44 which was a silver. It was a bit slower than I was hoping for but I was climbing pretty badly and there was 300m more climbing than advertised!

Overall I thought it was a good ride, a few of the road surfaces weren't great but the feed stations were excellent. I'm not sure why we couldn't roll over mats to get the chip times... that seems a bit simpler than plugging in.

like others said, this was really well organised and well sign posted. big thumbs up to rupert and all his helpers.
Managed 4.33 for the 71 miles. from the start i was aiming for 4.30 - 5.00, so i made my target. In hindesight though i wish i had'nt stopped for too long at Hever, i was only there for 5 mins, but after that i could'nt get going. Think i could have probably done around 4.15.

Shame we did not have the route sheet before the event. I took a wrong turn after the Ardingly feedstop, i was following someone esle who i then overtook, we were not the only ones as i saw a rider coming towards me the other way a few miles later, who had made the same wrong turn.

Aside from that enjoyed the ride and managed to get up all the clombs ok, but was bit surprised when i cam across the ford!

Now the times are up, would it be possible to add the 'standard' times, or at least post them on here.
I'd love to know how near (or more likely far away) I was from a goldie.
  • From a quick glance at the results, looks like sub 4:15 = gold, sub 5:00 = silver?

We are glad that most of you enjoyed it
With regards to having the route beforehand the routes are listed on the website if you needed them before the event

For those that are entering the Burgess Hill Rumble be aware that the Classic ride is roughly the same route but with just over 23 miles added.
