Turbo vs. Treadmill + Recommend a cheap turbo?

Mrs Si would like a treadmill. We're a bit strapped for space and cash and it's crossed my mind that a turbo might be a better idea
- A cheap turbo is simple and reliable
- A cheap treadmill is much more expensive than a turbo, reliability an issue?
- Mrs Si might actually use the Giant OCR3 I bought her as a wedding present

I can imagine a Simpsons moment on her birthday though. Marge - 'Homer, you bought you me a bowling ball...'

Anyway, to that end, can someone recommend a budget turbo? Is it a pleasant enough experience for the unfit?

Thanks.

Cheaper treadmills can have reliability issues and you need to spend a LOT of money for a good one. I would recommend a turbo over a treadmill personally, it is less fun having to clean a bike after a rainy ride than it is to throw dirty running gear into the wash for Mrs Si to clean!
It is usually safer riding inside on a turbo than it is on the roads in bad weather/dark nights.

A good quality turbo can be bought for around £170 upwards. The Kurt Kinetic roadmachine is one of the best.

Remember that turbo training can be very boring to many people, you may or may not be an exception.
  • If you are after a v. buidget turbo, I think one of the cheapest around is the Tranzx turbo trainer, at about £60. My mates got one, and it ain't that bad for the price. It folds as you would expect, and has a variable resistance magnetic flywheel.

Punch it into Google, they are about.
