I should add that it would be lovely to meet some of you at the Cheshire Cat. I know there are quite a few of us on the forum who are from the North West and it would be great to do some rides together in 2009.

It will, but how will we know each other?

A pink carnation in the left jersey pocket :)
  • doing the 102. Should be a giggle. Nice chance to stretch the legs and not have to think about planning a route.

I will probably get a t-shirt with "McBain_v1" printed on it so you can all recognise me and hurl abuse at me as you hurtle past me on the Mow Cop climb  As my sig says, I hope to be riding my Enigma Espirt so keep an eye out for my shiny titanium steed :D

Maybe we should all wear a red carnation on our lapels (old school!)

I'm in for the 102. If anyone wants to say hi, I'll be the one toiling away in last on a black yellow and orange Cannondale having heart attacks on every steep climb.

Sounds like a corking idea - Cat & Fiddle might be a good ride to do in February in order to get some miles and hills into the legs prior to March :?:

  • McBain et al...

C&F in feb sounds good to me.

I'm also down for the Mad march hare on mar 1st to stretch the legs and also to get a feel for sportives as it will be my first one.

I'm down for the 66 mile route as didnt want to run before walking.....

Well, I couldn't make Saturday 21 February for the C&F ride because I'm taking my dad to the Manchester Velodrome for the Revolution :D Doors open at 1730, should be a good night.

I take it a weekend date is what we would all prefer :?: I'm willing to take a day off work to accommodate but only if we are definitely going ahead with a ride. I get so few days holiday I'm loathe to waste 'em.

  • Only sundays for me as I have my son on a saturday.

    Sun 1st - good
    Sun 8th - good
Sun 15th - day after valentines...mmmm not too sure
Sun 22nd is my birthday so that could be a nice one & also week before MMH so ideal training ride

I'm down for that too, also my first sportive.

Where in Manchester are you? Do you ride with a club?

I am awaiting new bike before riding again with a club after sunday

I maybe should have mentioned that the quicker of the 2 groups dont wait around for anyone! :? sorry! The group b and intro rides are slower and we will wait if anyone gets left behind, usually the top of climbs. Dont let it put you off tho!!

  • I've been out a few times with the Wheelers, I'm waiting for my membership to be approved.

The B ride is the best to start off with, even if the pace is not a high as you can handle it's good to get the miles in and get used to riding in a group.

I'll have get some more hours on the bike again before I try another club run, the last time I was out riding was November

C&F or around there would be great. I couldn't make the 21st or 22nd (going to a black tie dinner - another reason why I have to lose a stone by march as I currently can't quite zip up the evening dress I bought in the sales!)

Anyways, I can do most other weekends, provided Manchester City aren't playing. I can also do Wednesdays if anyone has a weekday free.

So it looks as though we are after a mutually compatible Sunday in February :?: I think that the Cat & Fiddle would be good. It will take me a while to get there if I set off from home but am willing to drive to another "start" location if that is going to be easier.

Maybe we should try and sort a date before getting worked up about routes. Would be good to have Popette along and Cougie too (I hear he's really quick) and everyone else. As a suggestion what about a start in Knutsford and then out to C&F skirting Macclesfield? Might let us preview some of the Cat route?

just a thought but there are much nicer [quieter] ways of getting to the cat and fiddle pub than up the infamous climb :)

If that is the road that is out of the goyt valley - turn left up to C&F rather than right up to Windgather (? I think), then that is a really lovely road up and much nicer than the main road up C&F. Lovely picture ANT
What about pott shrigley, Brickworks, whalley bridge, long hill, goyt valley, turn left up C&F, wildboarclough (that is the most beautiful road) back to bollington? Perhaps wilmslow would be a good start point?

sorry, I'm getting into routes and I'm sure that there are many on here who know much better routes than me.

As for dates, what about 15th?
  • McBain_v1
    McBain_v1 Posts: 5,237
a_n_t - is that road properly surfaced :?: Looks like I'd need some seriously puncture-resistant tyres on it, but then it does look really quiet and for some reason the main road approach up to the C&F seems to attract all sorts of boy/girl-racer buttholes who think that their Corsa (with daft spoiler and large exhaust) is really a Colin McRae Subaru and that they are actually good drivers

15th works for me, day after Valentines - would be good to do a different kind of exercise :!: As for start location, as long as it is easily locatable for those without Sat Nav systems in their car. What sort of distance are we envisaging? Probably needs to be around 75miles by that point I would have thought...

Sorry to post again so soon, but on the subject of routes, there is one "oven ready" at:

What do people think about this :?:

    that road is here http://www.multimap.com/s/RJjdBwTP

it goes from errwood reservoir to a junction where you would turn right to get up to the pub. The road surface is fine, not as bad as it looks in the picture, plus its a one way rd!

Just thought I'd post saying I have entered the 102 mile ride, as I will be in Cheshire that weekend.
  • I guess a lot will depend upon where people are starting out from.

I live in sth mcr but do not drive. Looking at the road ANT posted the link to above...for me a reasonable route would be:

didsbury - Cheadle - Bramhall - Hazel Grove - Whaley - then along the Buxton road and veer off just after Fernilee and join the road up to the C&F, then possibly along the A537 and turn off across to Rainow....

depending upon how peoples legs are feeling from there...either across to Pott Shrigley and down to Newton / Poyton.....or down to Macc and then Prestbury / Alderley (where we could have a trial run up Swiss Hill too!)

Sounds good to me sportbilly, I wouldn't mind a trial run on Swiss Hill (not if its raining though)
Can I suggest that we start a separate thread - there may be people who would love a forum ride but may not be doing the Cheshire Cat so may miss out?
  • popette,

    sure...

I've managed to get up swiss hill before a couple of times...definitely a "sit down and ease your way up" type of hill - stand up and you lose traction with the rear wheel almost immediately.

even if wet - sitting down it is do-able.

a new thread sounds a good idea too...along the lines of the WRC warm-up thread?

Looks good too a_n_t. I have done that road up brickworks and then up to Windgather (I could have that name wrong) a few times now - It just seems to go on and on and on!
Looking at your map makes me realise that I'm not too far away from the start point of the wheelers rides. (starting didsbury right?)
I wouldn't mind trying out a ride with you guys as well. I'll check the website - don't fancy this weekend as Sunday looks miserable but I guess you do a newcomers ride quite often?

there's one on the 17th jan, next saturday I think, but judging from where you've been riding already you would be ok on a B ride! We start at the gateway pub usually, next to the parswood cinema/bowling alley place. Sometimes its the hilton on deansgate in town [like this week].
