Not enough puff....

Was on a visit to the Peak district this week visiting friends & rellies and bike came too. Thought I'd have a go at Winnats Pass. Failed miserably, had to stop several times on the climb to recover lungs  . My only excuse was that perhaps I wasnt warmed up enough before reaching the base at Speedwell. (started at Bradwell) I had no problems with the rest of the route although my average speed was a bit slower at 14mph than the 16mph I can manage here in the flatter East Riding. Guess I'll have to try and improve aerobic capacity. I find that I get bored with doing proper training, it takes the fun out of cycling, so will have to try and fit interval type bursts into my normal routes and try a bit harder on the hills.
2 Wheels or not 2 wheels..That is not in question.

For me the fun is in being able to ride as far as I want and over any obstacles that I come across. Structured training is the only way to achieve this realistically, so I see it as part of the fun of cycling as without it I cannot enjoy cycling to its fullest.

  • I find that I get bored with doing proper training, it takes the fun out of cycling,
The fitter you are, the more fun you can have.
  • I guess you guys are right. My fitness has improved over the past year while including some structured training using HRM and CM, however I did feel a bit disappointed at such a poor effort at Winnats pass. Possibly the gearing on my new road bike didnt help 50-34 with 12-24 cassette compared to the easier triple I'd been using. I'll be giving it another go sometime over the next couple of months.

20% is hard work in anyone's book, maybe a 28 on the back would help.

  • In the summer when it is warmer and you are fitter you would probably get up Winnats on 34x24 but this time of the year wearing extra clothes etc it would be a real stuggle with any gear combination.
