Food of the Gods

So the best thing about it being winter is that big food is back on the menu.

"Salad" will not darken my dinner plate for another four months and animal protein and potatoes will once again assume dominance over their lesser cousins "green stuff" and "it's good for you".

Thanks be to Thor it has been a long and mainly vegestable based Summer.

Now however the nights are dark and cold and I'm extending my "hot meal only" mantra out of the evening redoubt into the battleground of lunch.

I've been a sandwich man over the hot desolate months but have been edging into soup to adda bit or warmth to my lunch.

Today I plucked my courage up went down to Wasabi (Japanses fast food place) and got a bucket of Pork Katsu Curry (Breaded bits of pork, deep fried (as GOD intended), on rice - covered in curry sauce.

It is the Dogs!

I feel happy, full and dirty all at the same time - a potent combination.

I challenge any of you to beat that Friday fat boy lunchtime treat.
Fixed gear for wet weather / hairy roadie for posing in the sun.

  • Friday Fatboy Fave:

Joe Allen's. Skip the menu and ask for the bacon cheeseburger, medium rare, with fries. And a beer.

Dessert = three scoops of ice cream and a half pint of hot chocolate sauce.

I think I just dribbled between V, B and N and the spacebar. Damn!

Ah I love Wasabi. It's one of the things I miss most about working in Mayfair... I like the individually wrapped sushi... and the hot salmon they do... mmmmmmm. Oh and katsu curry = great.

    I'm really jealous. :(

    Lentils.......

In my view the only pulse allowable under big boys rules is Curried into Dhall with ghee.

However your soup does have sausage and I have been converted to French food through the majesty of tartiflette.

Got back from lunch yesterday and the boss phoned up from his meeting downstairs. The meeting had finished with hardly anyone touching the catering, so he invited us down to finish it off. Well, we couldn't defy the boss's orders. Can't see why so much had been left behind. The samosas especially were delicious :)

Call it training for the christmas dinner next week. Four-course carvery. From past experience we've booked ours on the last day, so they'll give extra portions to use it all up.
  • Just walked out to get lunch to see parked outside a DB9 conv with AU55OME on the plate.

Where's my marker pen gone? Pretty sure I can do a small change to a big difference

And make the numberplate a lot more accurate in the process.

Personalised plates - why?? You could get a t-shirt with 'I'm a d!ck' on it for much less and it has the same effect.
  • Japanese curry (kare raisu) is indeed the food of the Shinto gods. Although I prefer it made with beef rather than pork.

By the way, it was introduced to Japan by the Brits in the 19th century as their take on Indian curry.

On the subject of manly meals - Pete's Eats, Llanberis - sausage, chips, beans, egg, hash browns, burger, chips (not fries) and 1.5ltr coffee - assistance is required to get up from the table afterwards 8)
  • Umm Wasabi is good but being based in Holborn I'm spoilt for choice on the Japanese front. I like the Japanese Canteen on High Holborn for hot stuff - esp chicken or salmon teriyaki Mmmmmmmmmm

Had a big breakfast at Pete's Eats a few years ago, shortly followed by the 2000ft climb onto the Nantlle Ridge. Not trying that again.

On the subject of personalised number plates, this morning i saw a Saab with "S44B SO". I thought the same: "so?"
  • Well I think you're all very insensitive.

A week ago I moved from my old office which featured:
    - subsidised canteen with hot meals
    - subsidised coffee bar
    - games room featuring table football
    - nice 15 mile distance each way (or 7 on the train in winter)

to a new office which features:
    - err
    - it's 25 miles away
    - on an industrial estate
    - that's it.

So I've been forced, in Wintertime no less, to say goodbye to hot pies, fish&chips, curries etc etc, and instead to take part in the lunchtime solitary half-hour of silent web-browsing-and-cold-sandwich-eating misery. I'm sure there's still some grated cheese in my keyboard.

There is a pub though, apparently....
I've forgotten my PIN for the pain barrier.

Ahhhh the legendary "Big Jim". Rumour has it that when we was alive he didn't actually climb up the rock faces but pulled them down to his level.

What about winter drinks? Out go the light ales and in comes Stout and pints of heavy for those north of the border (not Watford this time). Christmas warmers are in like Whisky Macs and let's not forget the obligatory large glass of port, mmmm gout.

    Hm...

Mike's Bites (previously Mike's Bikes :( ) in Bangor offer the Greedy B*****D, which is an acre or so of breakfast: three sausages, scrambled eggs, three fried eggs, three rashers of bacon, tomatoes, black pudding, two rounds of toast, two rounds of fried bread, baked beans, and a pint of tea/coffee. There's a wall of fame of everyone who's succeeded in eating it without any bathroom stops, and they've even started listing times!

    Behold the Luther:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luther_Burger

One meat patty (beef burger), Cheese, bacon (as many as you like), pickle, onions and more Chese all squeezed between a glazed ring doughnuts (cut in half).

    Oh that's da shizzle!

I have to go home to make one of these....

    What madness is this?

A burger in a glazed ring doughnut?

Listen I like burgers and I like ring doughnuts (a lot) but that's not to say that putting them togther is a good thing.

Another thing Pineapple on Pizza - oh for the love of GOD why do people do this.

    it's just not right.

    Sweet or savoury, not both.

Apart from sweet and sour pork

    and Thai sweet chilli sauce

    and BBQ spare ribs

OK then it's not a hard and fast rule.

  • Well last week I was on a site that had a free canteen for lunch :-) One of the days I had a pork mince and dill meatloaf.........it took up easily 1/3 - 1/2 the plate and was about an inch high!!! This was stacked alongside some chips and beans :-)

As for big greasy meals my worst (or best) is probably a good helping of mystery meat from a kebab shop up near Spitalfields (I've sung the praises about this place on SCR) although I did skip my usual Friday meal treat today which would have been a large portoin of chips, covered in cheese with a bacon double cheese burger :-D Unfortunately I cba to go find a cash point and instead went for one of the rather good value Boots meal deals!

As I work at various sites around the place it does vary for what I can eat, London is normally excellent choice but expensive whearas my lovely home town of Croydon has a slightly lesser choice but is also much cheaper - one pub did us a meal and drink for under £4!

DDD - Not to sure about that burger, the theory is sound but I'm not sure about the combination of icing and meat.........

Schoolboy error - climb first, Pete's Eats after. The "Big Jim" is served all day.

Even better, try your hand at something too difficult, get repulsed, head to Pete's Eats to lick your wounds.

  • Goats' cheese. I am obsessed with goats' cheese.

I know this sounds 'poncy'. In mitigation I only eat it in slab form. Great fat slabs of delicious goats' cheese. With onion relish.

Throw an egg into the mix just for good measure. Also and I say this in all seriousness. Give yourself a good two hours sleep after you eat the Luther. You will fall asleep.

Other than that I haven't had a serious lunch in AGES!

For me Food for the Gods would be: Curried Goat and rice (and peas) from the Carribean take away. That or jerk pork. Just a large Jerk Pork, nothing else just pork jerked - maybe a piece of bread. Oh Man!

  • Icing and meat = wrong on so many levels.

I have waged war against inappropriate fruit for some time - parma ham and melon, cranberry sauce, duck with orange... Inappropriate fruit!

However I do like pineapple on pizza...

I am consoling myself with the fact that I'm getting (a portion of) a whole fillet beef wellington tomorrow. Downside is I have to cook it and its accompaniments, with Mother's help.
  • There is a lovely jerk place down Church Street in Croydon that I got jerk chicken from one day.......it was amazing! Infact I got a serious moaning at after attending the black history month night at the kids school and pigging out on all the food the parents had prepared to the point that I didn't actually eat much of the food the wife had made for dinner when I got home :-) Jerk chicken, jerk pork, curried goat it was all good!

    Icing on mean?

Well usually this is where I would say "Don't knock it until you've tried it... " But won't someone think of the children!

Still the point still stands. It is awesome. Truthfully you don't really notice the icing. Its just a very sweet bun. Any of you who remember Wendy Burger or ever went to Wendy Burger in America they use incredibly sweet buns. There is also the serving of syrup on bacon at their (American in general) breakfast diners.

The mixing of sweet and savoury is as awesome 9when done well as really spicy but not painfully hot food. Well for me anyway.

I like pineapple on pizza, Ham and Pineapple used to be my favourite as a kid.
