The Retro thread......blasts from the past

  • Ah, the legendary Tioga Disk Drive. A magical device that blew you over in a cross wind and made your back wheel five times heavier than conventional spokes. Absolutely no advantage to them whatsoever other than it made a right bloody noise and lightened your pocket of hundreds of pounds. I still wanted one though!

That said, it probably wouldn't have looked as good on my Raleigh M-Trax that I had than it did on Tomac's Raleigh. Mine did have titanium main tubes and Pace forks. The forks were 'Atmosphere Balanced' you know! :?:
Society is like a stew. You have to stir things up now and again otherwise the scum will rise to the top.
  • Ah happy days!

Ritchey Z-Max were my choice of tyres. Everyone seemed to have Tioga Powerstud barends too.

Think I've still got my Dirt VHS too!

AH, I remember the atmospheric balanced forks!

Loved the MTrax Ti, or Dynatech frames, so smooth to ride.
  • can still get the z max tires, in one form or another....

I run an 8 speed Suntour XC Pro thumbshifter upside down on the left of the bars to do the front mech on my 08 Inbred. I cant be dealing with rubbing front mech noise! My 1992 Breezer Lightning still has its original 92 XC Pro front mech and left thumby

Stopped as a drivetrain maker in the early 90's or something then I believe sold a few really low end options, reappeared a few years back making low end suspension forks under the SR Suntour label and I think they manufacture some of the low end marzcocchi ones which are branded under the big M

Back in 92 the Lightning Pro which I had was lighter than the XTR equipped Lightning as Suntour went microdrive first when Shimano were still running 26/36/46 or whever the typical old style ring sizes were. Mine was 20/32/42 with 11-24 out back! Tiny granny ring. Quality wasnt as good though. I ripped 3 teeth off my 4th cog one day then another ride I snapped a couple of chainring bolts on the granny ring and had to remove the others and tie it loosely around the bottom bracket to get home heh. The mechs and shifters however were brilliant, still using original shifters across the 2 bikes now and original front mech, 16yrs old..
  • the old bike to the right came with a load of old suntour stuff, i still use the front derailer, the rest sits in the shed until, well who knows what.

Oh yeah! I used to covet my mates Corniche too - orange and green goodness! Had the first indexed gears I ever used - Suntour Accushift!

And then a couple of years later someone else got an Orange Clockwork and I was still on my mild steel friction geared Apollo which was still too big for me to straddle after two years growth! Not a problem though - remember those padded top tube covers?

Good old Suntour! Worth having a look through their webpage:

    http://www.srsuntour-cycling.com/SID=si ... /index.php

Still make loads of stuff, icn some basic drivetrain equipment. Some of the budget forks are better than RSs efforts, and as Breezer says, are a vendor for other companies.

I used to have an Emmelle Cheetah!

I think my brother's Revolution has a Suntour crankset.

  • I remember having a chainstay protector with a shark fin on it, (anodised, of course!) and a mk1 crud catcher and crudguard - with metal supports connecting to the seat stay eyes.

Also, fitting "novelty" anodised cantilever brake hangers. I had a CND symbol and (I think) a frog or newt or salamander.

Do you remember those 'corner bags' that went between the angles of the seat and top tube??

They were padded to help you carry the bike.

I remember a lad at my school had a GT Timberline, I was so jealous......
  • Reading thriugh this thread its like stepping back in time to when i was a teen in the middle of the mtb`ing explosion of the early nineties, i remeber the first bike i was ever jealous of was my mates raleigh m-trax the ti one and then another of my mates bought a brand new marin bear valley se complete with full stx-rc groupset and marinlite cantis on it, they seemed sooo fiddly to set up but they were so powerful it was unreal...

I always swapped all the bolts on my bike for anodised blue ones and had matching blue cable hangers (cant remember the name of them, they went at the bottom of the brake cable and had another cable from each cantilever brake running through it)
I hope ya get me from that dodgy hungover description lol

Ha, I had a white with black splats Timberline with said corner bag. They were quite useful at the time. I forget what make it was but it was the one to have 8)

Does anyone remember MBK? When I got my very first mtb (if you can call an Apollo an mtb :? ) the spoilt kid up the road then got a super cool MBK. To say I was jealous....

I remember when the LED lights first came out. The rear ones were great the moment they came out. Much better than those big round Ever Ready lights that everyone had that got through batteries like nobodies business lol. As for the front ones that were green :? All I can say is I remember getting pulled for it and given a £20 or £30 fine for it lol.

I also remember that everyone had those rear mech guards too.
  • I also remember that everyone had those rear mech guards too.

Oh aye yeah i remember them, back when replaceable dropouts were standard on nearly all frames everyone had those big metal loops which if you came off heavily would bend in and prevent you from shifting into the bottom sprockets

I do remember MBK bikes, I think one lad round our way had one. As for the Ever Ready lights - yep I had some of those bad boys. "Ever Ready" my ar*e the batteries were forever going flat, leaving you with a pale yellowish glow. :D

    Do you remember "Dyno" lights........?

Oh and Supersonic......'Fred Salmon': In a Mark and Lard Stylee.....Whhoooo?

  • I bought these in 1998 i m surprised how light they are to be honest, things have defo changed. RST got bought out by a japanease firm (was american) back in the day their forks were meant to be very impressive.

    These are for sale btw.

Crud claw remeber that, DCD, i also have a bullet brothers chain tensioner. Most manufactures used to make their components in red, blue, green orange, black & silver i suppose it was a fashion or trend back then. X lite used to be a larger company, fox were unheard of, carbon was very pricey & titanium frames were very cool as were disc brakes could you afford them very pricey.
Show me your green bits i might buy them !

Started out with an orange and black marlboro - really cheap shitty thing

Replaced with a Carerra something - silver and purply pink with a flex stem

Replaced that with a 1994 Saracen Protrax SE with Rock Shox Judy XC forks - later replaced the elastomers with Speed Springs
    IMG_0419.jpg

    IMG_0423.jpg

Added a few gadgets to it, most of which were removed over the years - the sharkfin chainstay protector, a Dave's Chain Device, Crud Catcher with cool MBUK stickers attached underneath, X-lite bits and bobs wherever I could fit them, Planet-X I-beam stem, USE seatpost, and some Mavic X517 ceramic rims on XT hubs (currently for sale).

All the LX groupset on it still works! The wife has been riding it for the last 4 months and only recently have the gears started to go wonky.

I even bought the old bright orange Mint Sauce jersey and even considered a Mint Sauce tattoo with a bike chain round my arm

Think I may still have Dirt on VHS in my spare room too!
