ACE inhibitors and training/cycling

I am in my mid 40s and just been diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure). In the words of my GP I am just "unlucky" as my lifestyle is fine, I have just inherited the condition from my parents - both of whom had it. She has prescribed ACE inhibitors which I'm told I will be on from now on, unless medical science comes up with an alternative. I have cycled for more than 20 years and always kept fit/active. I The advice I have been given, and also read, is to keep doing what I'm doing in terms of exercise It would be really useful if others also on ACE or other HBP medication could share their experiences. Cheers!

  • I had a heart attack 6 months ago and take ACE as well as many other drugs

These should make no difference to your performance , they have no side effects in that direction and as they open blood vessels up ..well , that may improve things!

My consultant tells me to keep cycling .The raised heart rate and raised blood pressure in moderate excercise is easily tolerated agianst the hours in the week when it will be "normal" with the drugs working

Incidentally,I had Beta blockers as well for a while but they slowed my head down as well as my heart rate and I feel much better since coming off them
