Somebody make me feel better about this...

My training plan at the moment has me doing 9 hours a week. 3 on the turbo and 2x 3 hour rides on the road. Won't go into the specific intervals or anything as it's not relevent here.

I tried on saturday, and managed 90 minutes due to the fact the temperature was wavering between -5 and -1 and simply didn't bother yesterday. I know it's a purely psycholoigcal thing as skiving 2 days isn't going to affect me that badly but I still feel like a right lazy sod.

Surely any training plan needs to have some flexibility (especially at this time of year) to allow for bad weather, illness, unexpected family and work committments etc.

So just do 12 hours next week

i'm putting in an extra Turbo session tonight to compensate for my sloth and avarice. I get this every year... constant panic that the arctic weather is going to lead to me being unable to get on the road for 3 weeks at a time.

How about a spot of retail therapy? I'm sure some new gloves/shoes/bib leggings will keep you warm, and you could try buying something new for your bike to persuade you to go on a long ride to 'try it out'...
  • Me being cold isn't a problem. it's me falling off on ice. I hate ice and will do anything to avoid it.

Retail therapy... the Orbea Onix frame i just bought would count i should say!

  • I've done bugger all for two weeks, and 50 miles in total in the last month. Does that help?
  • Hey there,

I've been out twice in the last 8 days. I did use the Turbo Trainer on Saturday though. The problem with that being, the cold garage air has given me a stinker of a cold. My body has stiffened up and I'm coughing like mad. I even had to get up in the dead of the night to take an Ibuprofen, because my aches were keeping me awake.

The moral of the story? Just take it easy during the winter, or put the heater on in the garage, cause it's not a good time of year to try and fight off infections.

    Cheers

Well, my fittest ever summer came after a winter almost entirely turbo-based, if that helps  !

Mind you, I was motivated to ride longer and harder on the turbo then I ever normally would. Sometimes I could barely walk when I got off the damn thing...

Miss a few miles due to not going-out in the cold and the ice, what will happen ?
    - providing it is just a few and doesn't become the habit every week, not a lot will happen, you won't be fat/unfit/slow because of it

Go out and fall in the ice and break your femur, or catch bronchitis and take a few weeks or months off the bike, what will happen then ?
    - rather more...!

I have a bad chest too, only rode 60 miles last week but went out today for 3 hours. I enjoyed it but my chest is REALLY sore now. Moral... errr grin and bare it. I feel worse doing nothing than riding with a bit of a cough.
Retail therapy definitely works to remotivate me. And there is always something new i want to buy and try it out, be it lights, tights, gloves... etc etc... ;)

Ditto....had a chest infection for about the last 4 weeks and tried to ride it out by keeping up the miles....had to bite the bullet last week and go to the doctor for some help and haven't been on the bike for over a week. chest infection is all but gone now so back on the bike by Wednesday I think....should be nice and fresh.
17 Stone down to 12.5 now raring to get back on the bike!

If I had long/cold winters like you do I would make an investment :

But more seriously, don't worry so much about missing the long rides and get a good quality turbo effort in instead. You'll stay safe and lvie to ride another day.

Plan to ride indoors and if conditions permit, consider it a bonus to get outside for some extra time.

Rather than thinking of it as cutting back on your training, you can look at it as bonus extra time on what you can do.
  • Just checked up on the last time i was out on the bike - 4 weeks ago today. I think this is the longest ever period i've missed.

A mixture of a nasty cold and terrible weather, being busy etc... but thankfully i got a turbo in time and have been able to keep things going and i'll say this quietly - i'm enjoying the turbo. Obviously, i'm not working hard enough!

There's no way i'll go back to riding outside in icy conditions - a true fairweather cyclist i've become.

That always works for me, picking up a new saddle tomorrow.
Got a new Cateye computer last week.

I was umming and ahhhing on sunday morning about going out.... told my wife I was thinking about not bothering and she asked if I had all the right gear for going out... Yup.... then she asked if i would cancel my ride everytime it rained....

Came back 80 miles later and much happier albeit with cold feet!

When its properly dangerous on the roads I just go off road for a few hours of unstructured riding which is better than doing nothing at all.

Wouldn't if i was sick or close to being though..
