Squared off!!

Yep, 3 weeks of using my bike on the turbo trainer (about 150 miles worth) and my rear tyre has a very noticable squaring.

What now?

Could get an indoor tyre, but don't fancy changing the tyre every time I want to road ride.

Could get a new road tyre & 'waste' it on the turbo.

Do most people have a cheap rear wheel & indoor tyre for the turbo?

  • Get a cheap rear wheel and trainer tyre or, depending on what youve managed to square off already, try another type of tyre and see if it fares better. A squared off back tyre is not good on the road - they can be erratic in fast corners where you lean the bike signficantly.

Continental tyres square off quite noticeably on the road too but only after about 2,000km.

150 miles in 3 weeks sounds quite low? you only doing the 'odd' ride on the turbo? if so, probably not worth buying a spare wheel and cassette and turbo tyre.

but for what its worth, thats what I have done. the orange conti turbo tyre works well.

I just keep my old tyres when I buy new ones and transfer them onto my trainer bike when required.

Not massive I know. Been doing something like a 45min (20 miles) and x2 30 min (14 ish miles) sessions to go with a MTB night ride and a weekend (often MTB) ride.

  • My summer bike stays on the turbo during the winter with a conti home trainer tyre.
It's not the size of dog in the fight but the size of fight in the dog.

As does mine. My conti turbo tyre has also been squared off by the turbo before i realised i didn't have enough pressure on the roller.

If you are using the same bike on the road as the turbo then a spare rear wheel for the turbo with a turbo tyre would be a good idea. Some turbos have cadence sensors and the like which are attached to your bike frame and would be a pain to take on/off every time in which case a dedicated turbo bike is less hassle.
