You're not tempted by the £782 rear mech then?
  • That's what i thought!! I was a little stunned, the're even advertising the rear derailleur, which has been marked as "vaporware" on weightweenies as no one has seen it yet!! We'll see, to my mind the idea of getting a set of LW's from Wiggle slightly taks some of the romance away from the process. It's a bit like Argos selling Bentley's!! Probably showing my snobby side...

It's out there! Brian at www.washingmachinepost.net has just reviewed it (glowingly) but whether it's a demo or a freebie you'd have to ask him

    Exactly.
  • Hi folks.

Why pay £1500 for a 820g Lightweight disc wheel when you can get the 780g Lew one for a mere $5000?

    Santa?

there is always some gullable idiot with more money than sense that will pay stupid money for items like this and a £275.00 Assos jacket etc thats why these bike shops are so well stocked and make such huge profits .

Every bike shop owner I've ever met has had a private jet, a large yacht and a holiday home on the French Riviera.

They do it for the love and just about make a living wage.

Only one of the above statements is true.
  • The way I see it is, since the VaT rate has been lowered the more you spend the more you are saving, so buying that mech is gonna save me a lot more than a replacement Dura-Ace

But I think I will wait until they bring out matching levers and front mech

What's Assos got to do with Lightweight? Nothing.

If you can afford a pair of 3 grand wheels then why not?

I just wonder exactly how many of each of those on the "Best Selling...." list have actually been, well, SOLD?

Wiggle is hardly a 'bike shop' have you ever had a look in Tri UK warehouse ? or SJS cycles ?
I agree most Lbs start out as an an ex Pro or cycling enthusiast looking to make a living out of a hobby etc and probably eke a living surviving a roller-coaster anual cash flow and providing a brilliant service to local cyclists

However ...I thought we were referring to Wiggle , a multi million pound enterprise who can afford to stock £700+ rear mechs.

Exactly, I wonder how many people dismiss Assos stuff before trying it? Personally i'd rather spend my money on top notch gear that does what it should do than getting lower end stuff that only achieves half of it's goals. Last winter I bought a pair of £40 bib tights from Endura within a month they had a hole up by the hip and the pad was seriously uncomfortable. Then in summer i bought some Assos bib shorts, super comfortable, they are worlds apart, i'd rather spend £95 once than £40 three times trying to achieve the same results. How many time have you made do only to go out and buy exactly what you really wanted a few months later? Personally, quite a few times. I work hard for my cash and am in the lucky position to buy what i want when i want but am not fooled by marketing hype. Assos stuff keeps you warm in the winter (851 Airblock jacket, super warm) and cool in the summer. Spot on. I'm sure there are other brands which get close but, for me, close isn't good enough.

Back on topic, Lightweights have now lost their kudos being distributed by Wiggle. The answer, speak to Barry at Bespoke and get some Edge wheels! That's what i'll be doing! (they work out cheaper too..)
  • +1
To be fair to Lightweights, they were a truly revolutionary product when they came out. Not sure about the rear mech, think you'd struggle to best Shimano/Campy shifting performance.

Why beef about price kit? It's not like anyone is forcing you to buy it....

So what exactly have you got against Wiggle selling this kit?
  • It is going to be pretty funny to watch the Weight Weenies forum implode because their signature product of the last 5 years is now being sold by a massive online shop :D:D:D

Lighten up chum ..no need to be so aggressive. If you didn't intend to stimulate debate why post inb the first place. Not everyone is going to have the same views as you surprizingly enough
I suggest you make more effort to make the point of your posts clearer if you want to avoid ambiguity or misunderstandings. I took the point of your post to be about the cost element not just the lightness .

If you have 3 grand to spend on wheels be my guest.

Peanut mate I'm not being agressive and I am not being childish. I am just trying to understand your musings mate that's all.
  • To my mind Wiggle is like HMV, if I want the new Coldplay album i can walk in go to the charts section and pick up the recordings of Chris Martin whining and stamping away, no problem. Now if i wanted a special edition Sigur Ros album on double vinyl with a hidden track now i'd expect to have to un-earth it somewhere and go on a bit of a journey for the full satisfaction of having something which i'll get maximum pleasure out of but would also have been an experience at the same time. This was, personally speaking, one of the reasons to have Lightweights. This has now been taken away.

No disrespect to Chris Martin, i'm sure he'll have one of the first RD's. Gwyneth is a platinum customer.

Is it just me that spotted the jockey wheels are listed by wiggle as 11 teeth, and they are actually 10 teeth </annoying pedant>
I'd *never* *ever* by one of the Derailleurs for that price, but I have to admit they are a thing of beauty.

A question easily answered by checking what stock they actually have right now.

I can't believe these posts about the loss of exclusivity, etc. now that Wiggle sell Lightweights. What has that got to with anything? They are still the same wheels (still think they are revolutionary, even now), whoever sells them, and if it means not having to wait 3 months to get hold of a set then all the better.

My Endura / Lusso kit has managed more than that at half the initial outlay - I reckon you'd need to get at least 10 years out of the Assos to start making it good value.

Regarding holes in kit - that's down to the weight of fabric being use and where it rubs. I've worn holes in kit after extensive use, but I find it very hard to believe Assos kit is immune from this natural phenomenon. If it were seams going then that you could put down to the quality of manufacture, but not a problem I've had with the kit I use. I guess some people might not find high end stuff from other companies comfortable (usual comparison seems to be cheap stuff from other companies vs top of the range from Assos though), but personally I'm happy saving my pennies with cheaper brands which is comfortable, warm and doesn't wear out quickly.
