Headwind... Tailwind! Headwind... Tailwind! Headwind... etc.

Does anyone else experience this phenomenon? You're going along in a nice tailwind and, suddenly... big big BIG HEADWIND! Then it disappears pretty randomly again...?

This happens to me on a particular road every time. I once stood still to try and work out what was happening but felt no wind at all. It's usually out in the countryside where there are no large buildings and wide open spaces.

Does anyone know how/why this happens and how to predict it/use it to your advantage?

  • I have a similar problem in the lakes. It seems that no matter which direction you ride in, you get a block headwind for 2/3 of the ride. Something to do with the way the wind works around the mountains.

get a powermeter and you won't worry about headwinds and tailwinds anymore.

... you'll worry about the lack of money in your bank account instead
