How do I get a power test?

Hi there
Pretty new to this (been riding MTB and thinking of doing some road events as well) and am curious to find out what my power output is like.
I have a rowing background and in that sport the Concept2 ergometer is pretty much a worldwide standard.
Power testing is obviously widely used by the pros and serious amateurs in cycling through powermeters and some top-end indoor bikes (e.g. new www.wattbike.com) but it does not seem possible to just turn up at the gym and find a piece of kit equivalent to the Concept2 that will give you a score that actually means something.
Is there anywhere people would recommend I go without spending a fortune? I live in Guildford and work in Canary Wharf in London.
Thanks

See if a local university needs any subjects for a research programme - that way it should be free..0
