You have to make time - I was fortunate and my wife has always supported me if I wanted to cycle. Similarly though I helped out regardless of how tired/busy I was. If baby wakes up at 4am, do the feed and then grab a couple of hours on the bike.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

    Hi there.

Do you work from home or commute?

I'm lucky enough to have an office 30 hilly miles away from my house. Hence:

    - Get up early - ride to work.
    - Swim at Lunchtime
    - Run to/from train station on way home

Repeat (other way round) the next day.

    Cheers, Andy
  • ps If you work from home, then you need to rent an office 30 miles away - Im sure there's plenty of cheap office space going at the moment...
  • andy, how many times do you do this a week..?
63 miles to go and the break is up the road

Depends on the weather! If it's howling a gales and pi$$ing down I'll run instead of riding. The runs have various routes, but are generally somewhere between 4 and 9.5 miles each.

In the summer, the plan is 4 times a week.

    This month it's been mostly:

    - Run to/from station in the morning
    - Swim Lunchtime
    - Run to/from station in the evening

Turbo/Rollers maybe one evening a week and a blast on the cx bike at the weekend.

    Cheers, Andy

  • i could use the burley instead of child seat which would at least keep him dry and would keep me fit. first 8mile towpath last 2 uphill!!!

I ride tandem with my 4 years old and can also put the bike seat on for the two year old (I reckon about 55 kg of bike and children, plus 70 kg of me). As long as we go via a play ground, I can manage to do 2 hours riding.

It's not ideal, but together with intervals on the turbo after they're in bed I have manged to maintain some sort of fitness.

  • There are real people on this forum then! We've just had our first child and as it is winter I'm not commuting on the bike (wife thinks it's too risky). So that leaves the turbo and the weekends. In theory I fit it all in easily. In practice I don't. However I'm pining my hopes on the new year when baby sleeps through and I can do a bit more feeding. Then I can get out on the bike with a clear conscience. The child seat is also a distinct possibility to help get me out of the house on a bike.

Important to keep your strength up.
Anyway, first 6-9 months are the toughest from a sleep deprivation pov, but you still need proper organisational skills when your child gets older!

I love the guides in magazines and books that say "10 hours per week in the winter minimum" (see the comic last week). I have NO chace of getting that kind of time in.

2 days a week I have to do the school run (Mrs working much further away than me) that means I'd miss the start of work if I cycled. Then Saturdays I struggle as I'm a semi-pro taxi driver for the whole family.

2 other nights per week I have to take no1 son to swimming or sit in with no2 son....so

I commute 3 days per week which is only 7 miles each way, and get on the turbo for any days I miss for an hour at a time, and a 2 - 3 hour run on Sunday.

Round that I need to eat, sleep and keep on top of work...if I get 5 hours in per week I'm happy...7 hours is dream....10 hours....never.
  • the training times in the magazines do not reflect real life.it is hard to get the balance right, which is why i am going to focus on tt's next year due time restraints.
