Kinetic Road Machine vs Pro and Standard vs Rock and Roll

Having read comments here and researched II like the engineering and thought that's been put into the Kinetic range of trainers and they get good comments on this from other forums and in reviews. I'm likely to go for one in this range in the near future.

I’m wondering what differences in training might be experienced between the Road Machine with a six pound flywheel and the Pro which has an additional twelve pound one.

I've not done indoor training before and got into road cycling recently but want to be in good shape for next Spring.

I also like the look of the Rock and Roll action. It might give core muscles a better workout through concentrating on preventing the bike from weaving about. There could also be less strain on the bottom bracket and rear axle when out of the saddle, on hard acceleration etc. thus protecting the bike a bit more.

Anyone have experiences of comparisons between the various models? The three that I’m considering are available from CR at the moment.

  • Can't help you with the comparison but a couple of points:

    1. I find the basic Kinetic very smooth to ride, with more than enough resistance for a good workout; and

    2. If you're new to winter training, you might be one of the many who find using a turbo mind numbingly boring.

Put the two points together and I would go for the basic (and cheapest) model.

Thanks thetrotter, fair points that I'll bear in mind.

    A good strong steady strainer.
I was getting pretty noticable vibration using mine with a wheel fitted with a std, worn, tyre. Swapped to a TT specific tyre and there is slight vigration but not a problem and IMHO it's good turbo.

    Thanks andyrr.

Had a chat with my wife about it since she's the one who'd originally been pushing to get a trainer, but not at this price. She'd given me the task of researching it before making a decision and the chat resulted in ordering the R&R Pro.

It's on its way to us so hopefully will get a session in midweek. That's if I can keep her off it.

Actually picked up some useful comments from forums in the USA. Will post some comments by the weekend.
  • Hi Micken,

Like you, I too am new into cycling and have just invested in the Kurt Pro. Having nothing to compare it against is awkward but it is very sturdy and the extra flywheel makes a noticeable difference.

It is quite mind numbing but footy etc on the TV helps!

I am currently aiming for an hour each morning and 1 - 1.5 hours per night in an attempt to lose my belly. Does anyone know if this will help me achieve my goals or am i wasting my time? :?

Hi, just to update this post. There were some items missing from the trainer sent by CRC, who have not returned emails on this. Kurt Kinetic have been great and are sorting the issue. I will post when I've got some experience of using the trainer.

Loads of kudos to you for two sessions per day totalling 2 - 2.5 hours.
Send pics of belly loss

I'm gonna need more than footy for that amount of time eg "Lost", "Choirboys" etc.
  • Micken,

If you don't mind, I will give the piccies a miss as i do not want to scare all the users of this great forum away forever!

I have now been using the Spinervals DVD that came with the Kurt and this seems great for a newbie like myself. 'Coach Troy' is enthusiastic enough although i am sure he will grate over time....

I have been training over the weekend due to the weather and used the trainer tyre which seems better than my road tyre. The footy has been a Godsend but the DVD does ad an extra dimension to your efforts. Am i sick or should i not be enjoying the turbo as much as i am?

I think you should enjoy, particularly if the spin-off is losing weight and getting fitter. I got out for a ride today and managed to dodge the ice and frost on the shaded lanes.

Carl at Kurt Kinetic is sending parts and a complimentary riser ring. Fantastic service considering it's a holiday weekend over there at the moment.

I'm impressed by the service that KK have provided : in the 2 years or so I;ve had mine the only problem was the power computer resetting itself repeatedly. I went through Planet X who I got the trainer from and they replaced it with no arguments.
I still like (or like as much as any turbo) using the KK and it is as solid as ever.

Doing 2 sessions per day is also impressive but IMHO I'd not stick to that as it would mean that both were relatively steady. Why not try doing an easier 2nd session then the next day do 1 that is harder, hard enough that you don't need to do a 2nd one and indeed couldn't do that 2nd one at a good level ?
Concensus seems to be that surprising the body can lead to better adaption that always doing the same thing. Even try 1 short mega hard session then a longer steadier session later in the day/next day.
  • Sounds like good advice. The Spinervals routine was quite hard today and think I will adjust to heed your advice and see how it goes.

On a separate note, does anybody know if KK make a cadence meter or similar as i would like to use one in my training?

Mathematics: essentially you need to burn more calores than you consume - thts will lead to weight loss. So don't ruin all you good turbo work by pigging out on Pizzas, Curries and beers after your session :D
