No-one has any doubts that the Fenix / Tesco / whatever is a bright light.
For me, there are some issues about the spread of the beam - as torches are designed to shine a beam of light, whereas a proper off road light has a flood of light. I don't care if I can see 500 metres in front of me if I can't see that root a metre to the left.
As for the weight issue. Does anyone consider carrying a couple of sets of batteries in the total weight of the light?
I guess if one of these threads were a sticky everyone could post how good their torch is on it, without flooding the rest of site! Maybe even have a lights subject category?
Strangley I started this: http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... highlight=
Not because I wanted another thread, but because I was fed up of them. Yet it then became another lights thread.
BTW I'm not bitter, just can't understand why all there is to read about is lights.
You can say the same about a lot of threads. Which fork, 300 quid bike etc etc. But if ask new questions, a different dillemna or query or about a new light or mod, I don't see the problem. You don't have to read the thread!!!0 -
Just ordered one of these

Northwind wrote:For me it's simple, there's 2 approaches to night riding. Some people want huge amounts of light, so they can ride almost like they would in the day. Others embrace the night riding experience and enjoy it largely for its difference, and they're happy with a bare minimum of safe lighting. I'm in the latter, night riding for me makes familiar rides more interesting and totally changes how I ride, which is good. But I know other people who just consider the dark an inconvenience, and they demand better lighting than I do.rowlers wrote:I have 2 C cell Tesco Crees on my bars, after reading about them here. one is standard the other is modified so it floods abit more rather than a spot. I then bought 1 of these:

to go on my helmet.
How would you compare the dealextreme one with the standard tesco one?
To be honest the Tesco ones are far brighter, (but I'd expect that as they are about 10x the size!) but the are also far more of a spot. The Romisen one is beyond belief for $11! Nice bright spot, but plenty of spill too!!0 -

Woah, that is one bright light
I have been looking at these:
http://www.thetorchshop.co.uk/acatalog/ ... eries.html
One question, does anyone know the maximum diameter flashlight the Lockblocks and the Fenix bike mount can take?My webby: http://www.geekanoids.co.uk0 -
Have to say that is a poor value lamp
http://www.thetorchshop.co.uk/acatalog/ ... eries.html
170 lumens for 50 quid?
Take a look at the lamps on dealextreme.0 -
i've got a dinotte 200L and my mate recently bought a fenix LD20
the dinotte has a better / more even spread as the LD20 has quite a large "hot spot" where most of the light is, however the fenixs are 1/2 the price so 2 would make them better than the dinotte and also give you the ability to helmet mount one.0 -
Also looked at this;
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.15335
230 lumen, 5 modes.
It mentions an 18650 battery, is this the same size as an AA?My webby: http://www.geekanoids.co.uk0 -
No, the 18650 cell is different and will require a specific charger.
Why not go for one of these?

Thanks Supersonic, that looks very cool and high output. It also uses the 18650 battery and I was trying to avoid buying batts and charger. Also would something this big be easy to mount?
I have also been looking at these;

Also, the MagLite new 3W LED lights. The AA and AAA version look nice as the beam can be adjusted. Not sure on if the output is any good though.
Your opinion on any of these is appreciated. My webby: http://www.geekanoids.co.uk0 -
I just don't think 1 watt LEDs or ones that require 1 AA battery are going to be bright enough, unless you use 3 or 4, and even then will not output the same as the torch I linked to!
I paid $10 for the two 18650 cells, and $6 for the charger.0 -
Did you get the charger and cells from DX too?
Also, your opinion on the MagLite ones that use 2 or 3 AA cells. I have been trying to find out their Lumen output as the mini one I have is very well made.My webby: http://www.geekanoids.co.uk0 -
Yep, from DX, took 4 days to arrive! You can see a pic of the beam spread on the previous page to this.
Maglights are very well made, but you pay a lot for them: output is no more than the Tesco Cree torches really.0 -
Cool, thanks for that. I will take a better look tomorrow.
Re. the MagLites. I found the 3w LED new version 2xAA for £19.99. Not bad, but may well go your route. My webby: http://www.geekanoids.co.uk0 -
On the subject of maglites, is it possible to retrofit an old lamp'd maglite with a cree or similiar modern LED? I have a couple of the AA ones lying about (also a big one, but tbh I don't care how much light it makes, it's for menacing pikeys with at music festivals )Uncompromising extremist0

Supersonic, I priced that one up (as per your recommendation) and it looks plenty bright enough.
Quick question, do you run the risk of 'Customs and Excise' with regards to the value? I haven't ordered anything from abroad for a couple of years, and I believe the limit used to be approx. £18.00.
I know that back then it was always a gamble as to whether your parcel got chosen...and it has only happened to me once.
Cheers0 -
Not happened to me on any stuff I have bought from the far east, and have bought loads! They marked it as gift though...
Yep, is bright - not 900 lumens, but still great beam.0 -
Cheers, Super.
I wondered if it would be marked as gift. Have you tried this in Wharncliffe yet? Also, have you tried this torch with a Lockblock?
I'm going to make a decision this week. I figure I'll use a Tesco as a helmet mount, and then I've got to decide between Fenix, and then the torch you recommend. Obviously, if it's down to the money aspect, then it'll be the 'Deal' deal.0 -
Hey
My Fenix TK-11 is still going strong after 1 weekon the same battery, 1 hour a day, more than impressed.
My light lights up like supersonic pic, but I think it might have more throw, not sure though.
The Fenix rates at about 200m I think, but then again it was 50.00 and supersonic paid half that so good bargain.
The bike light companies better watch out they have comp. and no we wont pay hundres for something that can be bought for 50.00
Sweet thread, Now that I have my light, as needed urgent I can start looking at deal-xtreme and maybe buy another one, maybe for the lid.0 -
Hi, Canada.
That's the Fenix model, I've been looking at...will cost approx. £93 for TK11, charger, 18650 battery, 2no. Lockblocks.
If I go this route, then I'll probably try a Tesco for the helmet, but Dealextreme do offer some very good deals. Maybe, I'd do the same & get a helmet light form there too.0 -

The top link you posted is the the Romisen that I have bought. It is very bright for an AA torch, but as I have previously said it is not as bright as the Tesco C cell. I'd be doubtful, as Super says, that even 3/4 would be enough to light the trail ahead. I'm using one on my helmet, with 2 Tesco Cs on my bars, plenty enough for me!0 -
I got mine all in for about 75.00
Light 50.00
charger 15.00
battery 18650- 10.000 -
Light 50.00
charger 15.00
battery 18650- 10.00
Did you get the battery and charger elsewhere, and not from Fenix?0 -
No got it all from
http://www.fenixtorch.co.uk/led_torches/fenix-tk11.html
Might be just above 75.00 with the pennies ect, but not much more and it was all next day delivery, asked them question and had an email back within the hour.
Will be using them again0 -

Torch arrived today - - its tiny -
No instructions but how hard is it to put 3 batteries in!!
Test tonight - but all seems good so far - nice wide throw!0 -
Good Choice RE Fenix. I have a L2D CE Premium Q5 that uses 2 AA batteries as recommended by this very forum last year. I run uniross 2700 mAh rechargeables on Turbo mode (180 lumens) & these last well over 2 hours. In a year, I've only had to use my back-up batteries once as my mate got lost in the woods. Everyone elses mega expensive BIKE lights gave up before we found him, So my Fenix lit the way for the rest of us admirably! Ideally, I'd have 2 on the bars & one on the helmet. I reckon that'd be pretty awesome for £120!
Looking at those other torches - no way can they pump out 900 Lumens from 3x AAA's! That's Lupine Betty output almost! I declare BS.0 -
Whats the run time on that?
Prob about an hour if on aa batteries.0 -
Most of them use 18650 cells, not AA batteries. The 900 figure is the max output of the P7 emitter at 12 watts: with the right circuitry the cell could provide it, but you are looking at around 5-600 lumens as they stand. At the minute they are the most effficent LEDs on the market, nothing is as bright for the money.
Of course, the lower the output, the longer they will last. Which is why the modes are useful ;-)0 -
Lupine Betty uses P4 LEDs, those torches mentioned use the newer P7s, a brighter and more efficient LED. The Betty still outperforms the torch, purely because it uses more LEDs. Seoul claim 900lm at 10W for the P7s so I doubt the torches manage that- with 3AAs they'd be pulling over 2 amps, so the batteries would be dead in no time. But it's still going to be pretty formiddable.Uncompromising extremist0

Lupine betty 500+ or two torches at 50.00 max uhmm does not make sence, just buy an extra battery or two and carry around pop in and ready to go again in like two secs.
Lupine batts are prob hundreds, 18650 batterey with charger is 25.00 and that will last ages and ages.
Hope the bike companies start to suffer and drop the prices on their lights.
My TK11 looks awsome on my bike, and I like pimping my bike out so I care what it looks like.
We should do a petition and send it to hope and cat eye and lupine ect.. and see if we get a response.0
