peanut wrote:its impossible to ride some of the country roads around here when the rain is torrential. There is only enough room barely for a car to pass a stationary cyclist and the road simply ends in earth banks either side which can be over 10 feet high in places.
Very scary when there is nowhere for a mile you can actually leave the road. Coupled to which most of the tarmac is lifting and there are dozens of huge holes a foot across and 9" deep running down the road edge both sides.
If that wasn't enough the water pouring off the fields cascades down onto the road bringing with it all the mud so you can barely see the tarmac anywhere
Don't ya just love the countyside
Ruddy hell, i live in Somerset, where've you been riding?winter beast: http://i497.photobucket.com/albums/rr34 ... uff016.jpg

Agreed Peanut is being a little melodramatic here, but there are some roads around North Somerset that are just as bad as suggested, there are also loads that aren't nearly as bad."Impressive break"

No such thing as bad weather - I ride every day, what ever the weather. The only time I might decide to drive/bus has been on about two occasions in the last year - the ICE was bad.....
Ridden through 1" deep hail storms - that hurt, very bad winds that shut all the motorway bridges in the N West (that was fun emailing all my mates - got into work today..ho.ho.ho), torrential rain, etc.....
There is a nice climate controlled car sat on the drive, I still ride..... 8 miles each way....0 -

Can't help thinking that they had the last laugh, they were prolly at home drinking beer and watching dvds, using the weather as an excuse not to go into work ...and you were working
That would be the day I'd phone in and say the car won't start!!0 -
i had to go home today in the poring rain and a very strong headwind, took me long than normal0

Yesterday was kind of wet. The sort of weather that fleetingly makes me wonder if a short commute, 10 miles or so, wouldn't be better than 30 miles. But I got there just fine so maybe not. Today was a really nice morning.0
