I usually commute 2x11m 3 times a week (mostly unlit b-roads), but when I saw that there was poor visibility, torrential rain & gales along with a weather warning today I crumpled.

Who'd ride under a weather warning?
Cheers :)

I'm on the bike. It was quite pleasant this morning (for the time of year, anyway). However, it looks like i'll be working a bit late to try and avoid the worst of the weather this evening...

I was all set last night until I saw that I would potentially be riding home in heavy rain and 40mph head winds. What's the point? Its certainly not going to be enjoyable and will bring various dangers with it.

    I don't have any choice!!
  • Cycled and forgot i left my helmet at work yesterday along with my bib tights and everything else was in the wash so had a bit of a sketchy one, strange how a helmet makes me feel invincible :?
  • I skipped it this morning. Seen as it's still raining and doesn't show much sign of stopping before it's time to head home, I'm not regretting that decision much. Fortunately, the rest of the week looks like it should be quite nice so I can still fit my 3 rides in.

P.s. I'm well aware that I should MTFU.

Rode home from work after nights on Saturday. Gale force winds and rain and flooded roads. So miserable. Have met office as my favourite on tool bar now. Not doing that again!

Is that a ford or just a nicely flowing road?

I would/will/have done but that is my only realistic way of getting to work. Plus we don't tend to have 'proper' weather here in the South East!

It's the ford on the route of the Exmoor Beast, it's a cobbled road underneath - somewhat uneven! I came to a complete stop about a foot from the end when I hit something underwater, managed to get going again fortunately.
Apparently there were a few who did go over in it - not funny considering the next 3 or 4 miles took you up to the highest point on Exmoor, they must've been C O L D!

Got up at 7:30, looked out of the window, all dry, had breakfast, checked the weather forcast (bit wet and windy, but decided that rain and a hot shower at the end was do able), got changed into cycling stuff, looked out of the window pi$$ing it down :0( took all my cycling stuff off and jumped in the shower! Took the train.

Cycling home in the rain is one thing, cycling to work and the thought of wet clothes is something completely different!

  • Decided to cycle - weather looked OK in SW London at 7:30.
If I wanted to take the train, I'd have to get up earlier !
(Commute by bike 50-65 min, by train/bus/tube 90-105 min)

Did rain near Twickenham- but tolerable.
Having showers at work does help.

Weather forecast for NI is "a bit windy", and it is. Just a few clouds. So I took the bike, is what I'm getting at.

My process for cycle days is to look outside in the morning and if it's not (a) hurricane paddy or (b) snowing/icy, I'll take the bike. I don't mind rain.
Today is a good day to ride

    Which race was that?

Bit more rain outside than there was this morning. Bit more wind too. Terrific.

Robustly ignore the weather forecasts, me. If it's not p******g it down at the moment I'm ready to leave for work I cycle. Too many days spent fuming in traffic wondering what happened to the promised monsoon, and hoping it will be along soon to wipe the smug grins off the faces of the cyclists who paid no attention to the forecast.

    I love heavy weather!!

I waited for it to get really wild here last night (about 5.30ish) then went out for a ride. Branches falling everywhere and nearly got blown off on an exposed riverside bit of road.

Only pain was a major puncture 2 miles from home.
  • Two experiences spring to mind:

1)Rding home after a long training ride last year, I rode through a rarther large puddle not far from the village where I live. It was was Ok for the first 10m or so, but it's difficult to maintain one's balance when the water goes over you cross bar!!!

2)I used to have a 24m commute. On one occaision this involved battling for 2 hours through a snowstrom. today pales in comparison.

Have to ride home tonight. On the plus side.
1)They'll be plenty of space in the guards dept for the bike
2)They'll be the mother of all tailwinds
    3)It's not snowing

However, avoiding said puddle entails 3m detour
One can never have too many bikes, although the missus draws the line at a turbo in the living room. http://commutebybike.wordpress.com/
  • Yay....my trousers have just dried out.

    On my last mile approaching work I got caught in two minds as it started to rain;

    1. Stop, put waterproof trousers on.
    2. Go for it and I'm sure i'll be fine.

Wish I'd have gone for option 1.

Especially when the hail stones started banging off me bonce.

Still, at least everyone in the office found it o so hillarious as it looked like i'd pee'd my pants...

    Brilliant.
    <insert witty comment here>

Also, I have calculated my FCN as 12...although I have no idea what that actually means.

I routinely have this problem, and even if I've just left work I usually go for option 2 rather than stopping, giving myself an excuse such as 'I'm sure it won't last', 'it's only about another 20 minutes' or 'I'm probably soaked through already - it won't be worth the bother'.

I always wish I'd taken option 1. I never do.
