If the DM wanted to, it could mess up anyones career/image...........

In the interest of balanced argument so could any paper. The lefty press and Bandwagon Brown were quick to jump on George Osborne's ill-advised trip on an oligarch's yacht, even calling for an enquiry, but have remained strangely quiet (especially the Tribune) about the far greater, sinister dealings of the twice-disgraced Mandelson who still insults our inteligence by refusing to answer questions. And there's the bottom line - when the lefties and their agenda are cornered the best that they can come back with is lame attacks on the Daily Mail (mainly) or the Torygraph. You only have to look how many times it (the Mail) gets a mention in some of these posts. Perhaps the gentlemen doth protest too much, methinks.

I disagree as raising money for a political party through a foreign donation is (as I understand it) illegal & raises questions of buying influence with the government. It's serious - unlike 'Manwell Gate' or however you spell his name. Also both Conservative and Labour have been caught doing this in the past (by all the press) - Cash for questions, buying Lordships etc etc. The press are doing an important job here - keeping the politicians in check. It's not the same as telling some Grandfather that his grandaughter is a bit of a slapper....besides he probably already knows!

Yes, of course. I meant the press generally have that power. But as has been said, its usually only ever the DM that are desperate to lead a moral crusade against those they consider to be corrupting influences.

I think Russell further incurred their wrath when his initial first retort was to ask what was worse "leaving a swearword on Andrew Sachs's answerphone or tacitly supporting Adolf Hitler when he took charge of the Third Reich..." Apparently Paul Dacre hit the roof

By the way. We still haven't had an example of what those not into RB see as funny.

Come join me on the comedy thread...

    Very good.

How did you know I'm a Wiltshire boy? Currently in exile in Wales but occassionally back for a spin up Brassknocker. Where are you? Have you seen the Yokels Unuite thread on Commuting? They're planning drinks in Brizzle I think.
  • Passout, indeed procuring funding for a political party from a foreign donation is illegal. But it has since been established that this never occurred - all parties agree. Yet in Mandelson's case he was in charge of affairs when aluminium tariffs were altered in Europe to the great advantage of companies like Russal, the Chief of which is the Russian who's yacht both Osborn and Mandelson were aboard. He stood to make at least £200 million from these tariff changes, probably closer to half a billion, and yet there is no rush for an enquiry especially from GB (who would look a complete fool if he had to sack Lord Hartlepol & Foy for a third time) Mind you, with the Labour Party being nearly £20 million in the red and yet remaining in power it begs the question of how much New Labour have benefitted from all this. Also, why is it that these confirmed socialists line up to be made peers? If you want hypocrites look no further.
By the way, I don't think Ross should be sacked. I couldn't give a stuff about Brand one way or the other.

To be fair though, I don't think Brand was helping himself at all with a comeback like that. Didn't he continue by insinuating the Daily Mail supported the Holocaust? It sounded like a retort from a school kid, not supposedly one of the best comedians in the country.

Brand is, by his own admission, self destructive. As soon as it started to get out of control it was clear it wouldn't end well. And I'm sure the press were aware of this likely result. Hence the ferocity of the pursuit.

It seems Friday Night With JR is to be replaced by Speed. And Richard Allinson will be standing in for Ross his Saturday morning show. I wonder if the beeb are having a laugh here by putting on in his place the blandest options available. Its yet to be announced what will be on instead of RB's show on Saturday night. Maybe a local dj will be drafted in to play soft rock anthems.

Oh, and I'm glad to see Louis Walsh has weighed in with his important opinion...

Speaking to BBC News at the National Television Awards, X Factor judge Louis Walsh said he was "glad" the two presenters had "been put in their place".

"It's about time. Jonathan Ross does and says what he wants and gets away with it," he said.

Ffs. Louis Walsh is reponsible for corrupting far more minds than those 2 ever will. W@nker.

Neither did Jonathan Ross' comment after securing his huge deal that he was 'worth a thousand BBC jounalists'. I'm sure loads of bloody-minded second-rate hacks have been waiting ages for this.

It's incredible to see how many people have been siezing the moral high-ground and appointing themselves arbiters of the nations morality over this - on Wednesday Kelvin 'Hillsborough' McKenzie was spouting outrage over the whole thing... The hypocrytical ars*hole.

And they really should have replaced 'Friday Night With Jonathan Ross' with a Fawlty Towers repeat...

I personally think these two are getting what they deserve; but if they'd picked on someone the public actually dislikes, then this furore would not have happened.

As for Brand, he's a talentless pr1ck, so no great loss, mind you, he'll be back in work before long.

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Again...agreed. But the press are right to pursue the politicians I think - even if sometimes it does end up been baseless allegations. When it comes to politics and power the press represent and important check/balance. Of course it's not even handed as the press as it's down to the work of individual journos and stories that sell but the more potentailly dodgy dealings that are investigated the better.

I think we all agree there are more valid targets out there. At the end of the day this is a 'celebrity' news item. A good distraction for the public amidst the financial meltdown and a better 'watercooler' story than the impending recession. GB is no doubt happy to have this rubbish occupying the front pages.

Actually I think Andrew Sachs is a loathsome creature who doesn't deserve to breathe, hanginging is to good for such filth.

They're saving you from yourself there, Heavy. Surely you don't want to be exposed to such SICK FILTH?!

Hopefully it'll be replaced with audio-versions of 'Antiques Roadshow' or 'Alan Titchmarsh Presents... Songs of Ineffable Niceness'.

Odds on a Fawlty Towers re-run anyone?
  • Back in the late 1970s the BBC did actually release soundtracks of the show on audio cassette, a sort of prehistoric audiobook idea. They could just play one or two of those.

Doesn't that mean that we've got to sack most of the world's investment bankers? Beside you and I are to blame for the state of the economy too. Nobody was forced to take loans, overspend on their credit cards & take on risky mortgages in order to satisy their lifestyle aspirations. That includes buying fancy bikes / biking holidays by the way.

In fact I think that today's service based consumer economy and the positional nature of society is all your fault...resign now damn you!!

Ridiculous OTT suspension for Ross. And they've even pulled his film 2008 REPEAT from the saturday schedule ? What the hell is that all about.

I'll miss the Saturday radio show.

  • A lot of people, especially in the media industry, are saying it's a lot of fuss over nothing. I think they're wrong. The BBC has been "dumbing down" for years and leaving answering phone messages saying "He's f*cked your grand daughter" was rock bottom and a chance for the public to say "We've had enough of this". Either the BBC needs to clean up or the public has to get dirtier, sleazier and crasser. Those 35,000 people were saying it's the BBC that is going to be doing the changing.
Cycling, it has it's ups and downs.

Just to make you feel more hopeful for the future, every student I've talked to either finds it hilarious, or not that funny, but not a big deal.

On a serious note, other, more important stuff has happened this week. Take a step back, this really doesn't matter a whole lot. The US election is going on, the USA has killed 8 in Syria, there have been apparent US strikes on Pakistan. There's also the blooming credit crunch.

But what's seemingly been the number one most important story? Yep Brand and Ross.

I don't think you have to be some reactionary antiques roadshow viewer to think that phoning up a 78 year old and leaving messages taunting him that you had sex with his grand daughter and maybe he'd like to kill himself over it is going too far. It's just crass, offensive bullying.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.
