Feeking wind............

I've been commuting since June. I've so far only got wet a handful of times, and generally the weather has been fine...

However, I've had a glimpse of what I'm in line for come the harsher months.

Wind.............

I live near the coast line. I cycle to work against the wind. When I come home, the tide has changed and I'm cycling against the wind. Feeking brilliant.

It knocks around 5mph of my average speed. In percentage terms that's 25%ish.

Sorry, lame rant and not a lot i can do about it...but i feel slightly better.

David

PS...really like this forum. The MTB section has too many bits for me to keep up as occasionally I have to do some work, however, this section is easy to follow.

As you were.
<insert witty comment here>

Also, I have calculated my FCN as 12...although I have no idea what that actually means.

I'd suggest your find a new job......in the opposite direction to where your currently working so you travel with the wind rather then against it :-)

Either that or invest in a nice road bike and aero helmet

Almost forgot, welcome to the forum, hope your prepared to get no more work done!

Fear not the wind. Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.

Attack the wind make it bow to your power.

There's a reason Netherlands and Belgium produce great cyclist.

Not quite, road bikes are the path to enlightenment (and faster journey times), now shaving your legs - that's the proper route to the dark side

You wanna try my commute down the side of the Severn Estuary through Avonmouth port Heading South West......thats a man's wind! Great on the way into work though - nearly always a south westerley gale from the sea. I also have to cross an airfield at Filton in Bristol - thats fecking windy too - but you kinda expect it at an airport as planes always take off and land into wind - otherwise they don't work......

    It does on Morecambe bay...

Discalimer: I may have made that bit but got to blame it on something or it wouldn't be a proper rant without something to vent at.

A much simpler solution - work nights and then you will have the wind behind on both legs of the commute!

Now that is a nice car :-) A proper little sports car, unlike those horrid MX-5s from Mazda!

Just to be clear - I wasn't referring to the CRV in that previous statement!

  • Ok..slightly off topic but don't feel the need to start a new thread as i'll look like a post whore....

Is there a definitive answer to whether or not I would be committing a fashion faux par if I were to fit some very small bar ends to my riser bars?

I spotted some stubbies in an Evans catalogue that looked discreet enough. I just find that against the wind, it’s head down and I’m using the end of the bars for grip…

Hmm, you might get away with it. As for as SCRing goes their aren't any penalties for bar ends :-)

IMHO you'd be better off with aero bars for beating the wind tho! I also did spot what appeared to be a Toys R Us special full susser with aero bars fitted at the end of my last charity ride  I think I did a triple take when I clocked it!

I'm assuming the rider was either meeting someone there or did the half route as I don't remember seeing them any earlier!

In all seriousness tho if you find you are spending more time on the ends of the bars and they would make it more comfortable and probably a bit safer then I'd go for it!

    cheers for the advice.

OK...i didn't know what aero bars were, so googled them and 'wiggle' threw up a whole load of results.

Couple of things struck me...they seem in the most for road bikes. Also, as I ride off road nearly every weekend, I don't fancy carbon bars or having to swap stuff from one set of bars to another...unless I'm missing a MTB specific set?

I also picked up a subtle feel from your reply that bar ends on riser bars would be as acceptible to others as shaving ones legs is to me?

That last post was a bit tongue in cheek :-)

Aero bars aren't meant to go on a MTB or even a hybrid and are only really useful on road bikes for really long, generally traffic free, rides.

I'm sure I've seen a few bikes around with bar ends on riser bars and they don't look out of place. If you find it easier to ride with your hands on the end of the bars rather then in the "normal" position I don't see any reason not to pick up a pair, after all it's got to be safer and more comfortable having a proper hand hold!

When I was using the wife's hybrid bike when my usual roadie was in for it's service I had a few headwinds to tackle on that. I also found myself trying to tuck down and grab the bars in the middle or at the end but ended up sitting back up as it just didn't feel safe!
