Can anyone recommend a training diary?

Simple thing I know, and I could just use a 'normal' diary - just think if there's something more specific that people have tried and tested I might be more inclined to use it and it might motivate me more.

Any specific ones that are better than others, any really nice ones that I might covet a little more than another, or will any half-decent one do?

Follow this link to a cycling diary from Joe Friel.

I assume you have a PC since you are posting here? I use WKO+ which is awesome esp. with power data. I also used to use zeropace Training Diary which is pretty cool. Many others advocate sportstracks. I think I spied a garmin edge on your cervelo? surely that comes with garmin training center software?

Over in gear and know-how they will have lots of ideas too.

All valid points liversedge, but sometimes I don't download the data straight away and just want to jot down what I did, time, distance, conditions, how I felt etc. Then I can utilise Ascent / Garmin Training Centre when I download from my Garmin and look back into the diary to recall 8)

I must confess that sometimes I wonder if the motivation to ride comes from the fact that I'll have more juicy data to examine

The thought of not downloading it the moment I get through the door is horrid ... I wouldn't be able to sleep until I'd checked out the score on the doors for the ride!!

Lol, not quite reached that stage yet - at the moment I'm still happy knowing the basics (time, distance, average speed), but when I get into it I reckon then I'll be more in line with you!

And it's the motivational thing of seeing the pages fill up, and the kick up the ass when they don't that I'm after almost as much as the riding itself! :?

I make my own custom diary for each year....but then I am a printer! Could this be a new avenue to move into?

    I'd like something quite Moleskine-esque that's small-ish but with a hardcover...

And I'd happily pay a few quid for it

That might be pushing it! But then if I charged Rapha prices?

Rapha prices might be pushing it too!

Might just order the one in the link above, especially as it's the Joe Friel book I was planning on getting

If you are interested in an online record of your training... I wrote myself a little website to capture distances and times. You can create a free account at www.howfarhowfast.co.uk

I started putting distance, time, speed, weather, how I felt, etc. on a simple Excel spreadsheet a few years ago. Still using it now, easy to do totals and graphs on-the-fly if I want to, and it's always interesting to look back and see where I was and what I was doing this time last year or whatever.
  • have you looked at the free online Cyclogs.org. I find it really useful and just like any dataabse, very good at sorting my rides with different criteria. Until this year I've never used the "Target" section. However this year I did and seeing the red line target on the graphs has been very motivating!

Thanks John, looks very good - but as I said before I don't always download ride data straight away and just want a decent paper-based diary with good page divisions / headings to quickly jot down what I did, time, distance, conditions, how I felt etc when I get in from a ride. Then I can utilise Ascent / Garmin Training Centre when I download from my Garmin and use the diary to look back and recall each ride.

I'd guess Rapha might re-launch theirs now that the end of year is coming around, but I hope they might offer a cheaper alternative too!

Rich-Ti, I too, often go for days without bothering to download my training data.
I just use a simple note pad to write down all the info I can remember at the time, then revert back to the relevant pages when doing the downloading bit.
You don't need to line the pockets of Rapha for that.
However, if you must buy Rapha stuff, then still use a common old scrap pad for your training data, and buy an item of Rapha clothing, if that's what turns your crank.
