aargh, now the Police are on, Sting might be from Wallsend, but The Police are the worst live band ever0
-
now it's the Specials, 2nd only to the Clash live0
-
now it's U2, that's it I'm going to bed
wait a minute the Jam are on0 -
any ex punks on here suffer from arthritic knees and put it down to excessive pogo-ing ?0

might have been good to know the channel."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I still miss the days of Carter USM. Bloodsport for all/A prince in a paupers grave - both classic! Saw them at Derby University, once with Stuart Pearce (he must have dragged Colin Cooper along as well...) stood about 10 feet away. Uni' had a Green/Amber/Red visual noise display on one of the walls. It never left the red. Superb gig!

So what criteria make it a good live performance?
- sounding just like their albums
- huge lights/video screens/hydraulics/fireworks (Rolling Stones)
- rapport with audience (Freddie Mercury/Robbie Williams)
- musical improvisation (half hour drum or guitar solos)
- being in the same room with someone already very famous
- band members subsequently become very famous indeed and then die young0 -
The Police, I'm sure have done some decent live stuff. Trouble is Sting is a bit of a berk.0
-
-
So who is a bigger berk? Sting or Bono?
Bowie0 -

Sting. Bonio doesn't seem to take himself so seriously, and does have 3 other guys in the band to keep him in check, I doubt Larry is backward in telling him he's being a "feckin' eejit"
It's just a hill. Get over it.0 -
hhmm..live gigs can vary tremendously - sometimes a band can have a night when everything seems to be bang on the money.
I saw a local band many years ago play the final gig before the Southampton Top Rank Suite (what a nightclub that was..) was torn down, and it was superb - they were on the top of their game and it was awesome...but also - saw Queen at Wembley in 1986 and that was impressive too, to see Freddie Mercury holding 70,000 people in the palm of his hand was an amazing experience.
sorry to hijack the thread a bit - it just made me think of these gigs"Chocolate makes your clothes shrink0 -
I saw Queen on Saturday night. Still pretty good, IMO. Even a projected photograph of Freddie had the place going wild.0

Queen without Freddie Mercury, is like The Stranglers without Hugh Cornwall. When something as integral to the band as that changes, should change the name. Still a good band though.
Going by past reputations over the years. I would suggest Kelly Jones from the Stereophonics. He sounds that far up his own a##e, he needs a safety rope...0 -

Now you're talking. Saw the Stranglers 15 times and some great gigs amongst them, but never since HC left. Didn't really fancy it after that.
Apparently, Cornwell is now quite good as a solo accoustic performer, but I haven't seen him on his own.0 -

Toshmunds says,
Good stuff Pneumatic
I don't know the full history of the band. Was their split quite acrimonious? I seem to think/remember Hugh C took them to court to make them change the name.
I love the Strange Little Girl video, can imagine the girls in the video are now mums themselves "You cannot go out dressed like that!" would carry little credibility with them though

Hugh just walked out unexpectedly one day after a gig at hammersmith(?). Said he'd had enough.
I imagine there was all kinds of intellectual property wrangling after that.
I think he went at the right time (or possibly two years too late). It must be hard to know what to do when you're not dead yet and your best music is behind you.0 -

Carter are the only band I would ever mention in the same breath as The Clash
going to see them next month ( twice), Carter that is not The Clash0 -
Saw the Clash in 1979 on the London Calling tour at the Glasgow Apollo - the Apollo stage was about 8 feet high and the front of the stalls a heaving mob that upset the mental bouncers - needless to say there was an almighty barney. I think this is the concert footage in the film Rude Boy. Saw the Stranglers there too - Nice'n'Sleazy tour with the stripper, but the band that owned the Apollo were Stiff Little Finger - Glasgow was the closest to a home-town gig to Belfast. I also recount going to a double-header gig in 79 or 80 with U2 supporting hometown boys Simple Minds! The band of the early 80's had to be Spear of Destiny though.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

I presume you make that statement having seen every live band ever?
obviously not, but thanks for that extremely interesting contribution to the debate
for your benefit, oh pedantic one
the police are the worst band I've ever seen
who's yours - Mcfly ?0 -
I've got no problem with thread hi-jacking, but Queen - howay man, thats going a bit far
Bowie is indeed royalty
and to the bloke who mentioned the fact that its 2008 - what do you reckon of Cage The Elephants cd ? love it meself and they put on a good show
Monty Dog, did you go to the first festival at Loch Lomond in 1979 ish. Put me off festivals for life.
Was tempted to see Glen Campbell tonight, but £32 quid's a bit steep
the Mekons anyone ?0 -
Queen are the worst band in the history of music. And Phil Collins is the worst solo artist. Or at least he was until Dido came along.0

thats more like it
just out of interest, who do you like ?0 -
I saw the Stranglers in Poole many years ago - launching into the second verse of No More Heroes HC got the words wrong to an amazing degree, stopped singing, and one by one the band stopped playing and just stared at him. "I've been doing that song for xx years," he said "and suddenly I can't remember the words..."
the begining of the end?
(and I still say Queen in the 80s were awesome live...runs for cover)Chocolate makes your clothes shrink0
