There's a flaw in the poll.

How do we know that there aren't loads of female lurkers out there just reading the results?

Yes, your sample is not representive. It's like asking all those who aren't here to raise their hands! People who don't contribute won't contribute to your poll. So your figures are skewed and therefore meaningless. Without a representative sample you cannot adopt a quantitative (statistical) approach like this. But you could use a qualitative approach and get opinions about 'why' people don't contribute - kind of like a focus group. You'd need less respondents but longer answers. Anyway, I guess it all depends on how bothered you are about having a valid methodology & at what level your research is at. At University or in Market Research companies a valid methodology is the only way to enable valid results. Hope that helps - good luck.

    wha' ? :?

I'll type slowly  ......he is asking a certain group of people (those who cast votes or post) rather than a representative sample (those who use the forum). His results don't represent his 'target sample'. Simple......?

Actually passout I was assuming that even the most terrified lurker would feel able to click a radio button and vote. But perhaps you're right.

Yeah...in reality (not the world of stats) you are probably right but if you wanted to publish it or use it in an academic journal etc you'd have to be very sure and spend time clearly defining your sample. You'd have to be able to prove your assumption in other words. I'm probably taking this far too seriously (sorry).....but I spend all day doing this kind of thing.

Hi - you've prompted me to become a member and post after a couple of months lurking, as lurkers can't vote unless they're members. I felt the need to boost the female numbers

I hadn't been on a bike for 36 years until July when my better half and I bought ourselves secondhand bikes to see how we got on with them. I started doing the 5 mile commute about a month ago, then last week we picked up our new bikes - his'n'hers Pashleys 'cause comfort is more important than speed at our age  I've learned at lot from you, particularly about what I'm going to need to keep going through the winter, so thanks for that and keep up the good work!

Hi Kaydee! Glad I've led you astray :)

Sometimes I feel baffled that roadie ponces like me and Jash ride incredibly light, featherweight bikes that actually float off if you don't tie them down, while people like Kaydee who want an easy ride choose half-ton jalopies like her Pashley. And yet we're the ones who fancy ourselves as the hardcore.

I post occasionally but mainly lurk because thanks to the Cycle2Work scheme and H******ds I still don't have a bike - even when I do no doubt Greg T and L_i_T will pour scorn as I'm a hybrid riding yokel

LOL There's no accounting for taste is there! I've been lusting after a Pashley for ages. :D

But seriously, think of it this way; if I had a light, fast bike my commute would take maybe 20 minutes each way instead of 35 and I would get only a fraction of the exercise time I'm getting now. I'm diabetic and overweight and I need as much exercise as I can get
