Looking at getting a Tricross Sport for commuting

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying this bike tomorrow:

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/spe ... e-ec016874

Has anyone got any experience of it or an earlier model?

I'd be keen to find out what problems anyone has had, or any plus points.

I'm planning on using it to cycle to work every day and maybe 6-9 hours over the weekend....and possibly some touring for a week or so.

Cheers

Oh, you utter, utter git

That's the very one I was salivating over in Samways last week... I want...

I had managed to put it out my mind until now. Oh Hell. :?:wink:

stunning looking in the flesh, and all the right mounting points for all your commuting needs.

VERY wide handlebars which was a surprise, but again useful as I would need to fit 2 x lights, cycle computer and bell

  • Theres nothing much wrong with these. The Roval wheels that the top model comes with are cheap to buy and a good upgrade. This is one I've been looking at and thinking of, and as I worked in a spech dealer I got to see all bikes that had problems. These had none...

Brown and black? Together? That would never do on the girls' fashion bike thread :)

When I was working for a SBC dealer, these were really popular as commuting bikes. Similar idea and speed to a road bike, but quite a bit more rugged.

I've not seen anyone have problems with them.

I'm still trying to decide on tricross vs Focus Mares Disc, both are nice. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Focus_Mares_Disc_2009/5360037601/

I have had a Tricross Sport since December last year.

Love it, love it, love it. Get one!

I do about 5-6 hours commuting a week on, plus often a 50+ ride at the weekend and it's uber-comfortable.

    Nice.

    <me color="green">

Can't decide if I want a cyclocross bike or a full on roadie :? But the Tricross and Mares Disc are on the shortlist.

The thing about CX is that you have the flexibility. the road bike won't be suitable for anything BUT the road, whereas the CX can go over the rougher stuff

  • I think that pretty much answers my questions!!!!

I was also thinking of getting the Bianchi:

but I definitely need the drop downs.

I'll take a picture and send it over to you Kieran :D

@Kieran_Burns I have an old skool Zaskar for the proper rough stuff - my problem is that I'm generally tough on equipment and I'm not sure a weedy road bike would survive me

I had a roadie for commuting years ago and kept breaking the wheels. But I wouldn't be using a new roadie for commuting, just ... roadie-ing, so it might be OK. But buying a Focus Cayo (today's favourite) on a "might be OK" is scary, so I dunno what to do.

@porkchops that Bianci is nice too. LX gruppo for £600 seems like a bargain.

  • I've got one and my other half as one too. Got it for touring in France (camping) in June and since then it's being used for commuting. Excellent bike and great value for money. No problems. Buy it! :D

I use the 2008 version for commuting with a Cayo for the weekend, fun stuff. On the good side the Tricross is a rugged bike, fairly upright/ comfortable and handles well.

On the negative side it is a bit on the heavy side and you're unlikely to use the small chainring. Also the brakes are a nightmare to get right but maybe the 2009 version will have solved this.

The only thing I did with it was change the tyres to 28 Armadillos.

Can I fit child seat and use it with tricross. Can tricross handle offroad like trailing bike?
Also considering it to buy but not sure if it will allright for offroad activities.

Also have a Tricross Sport (2008) and love it. Brakes are a bit annoying due to the total absence of barrel adjusters but apart from that it's lovely.

go for the speclized looks great for commuting,i have a roubaix elite for commuting,it,s a relaxed roadbike, that does the job just great, and there is no trouble going on gravel/dirty roads. But the tricross have i guess place for fenders and maybe even a rack ,thats nice. :D

they do - i checked the bike in Samways to see if it was a suitable commuter.

    God I'm still tempted :?

    .

You will use the small chainring if you ride the Ryals regularly - do you live in flatland? I love my Tricross, especially now its got 105 wheels & Hollotech cranks. You are right about the brakes tho'- they are spongy & imprecise (but the interrupters are great)

Sorry to burst the bubble however... (posted on another thread)

I've got a Tricross Sport, wouldn't rank it as my best 'spur of the moment' purchase. The whole bike is heavy and feels sluggish. My Scott Scale 30 MTB is lighter and can go quicker on the roads (but then again its twice the price :) ). On the plus side its reasonably bombproof, comfortable and versatile. Good winter trainer and can be converted to a commuter.

All depends on your requirements, budget, and expectations. If you can go for the comp, if you can't afford that I would recommend a Focus cyclocross bike. Much lighter for the price, wish I waited a week and got one :)

Strangely when I swapped out the tyres (semi-slick) for some Racing Ralphs (knobblies, I use it for hardcore XC) the bike seemed faster on the road. I reckon the stock tyres are heavy and have loads of rolling resistance.

Genuinely think you can do better for the money elsewhere. I'm now stuck between selling it at a £300 loss or sinking £500 into new parts to lighten it up... Wheels are heavy, cranks are heavy, even the cassette cluster weighs twice the norm...

  • I thought the tricross was a bit on the lardy side (and it was brown...) so I went for this instead ....
