Had new bike less than 2 weeks and my lock, which as been coiled round the handlebar post for a week has worn the paint away on the top post and the handlebar bit...

Surely this shouldn't happen with a plastic covered lock?

Opinions please!

Plastic isn't necessarily that soft, especially if there is chain (?) inside it. What bike/post is it?

Oh yes, paint rub is the bug bear of bikes. You'll also find the shifter cables and hydraulic hoses will be eating through the paint as we speak. Hardest substance known to man (shifter cable outer, at least compared to bike paint).

The rear brake hose on my £ 1800 stumpjumper not only ate through the paint on the frame under my bottom bracket but also wore a groove in the aluminium

You can buy patches (lizard skins do them) or helicopter tape to stick to the frame to prevent the paint getting damaged. Google helicopter tape (so called because it's designed for use on helicopter blades to protect them) or wait another five mins and someone will probably provide a link to someone on Ebay.

Annoying though isn't it  . Unfortunately bikes don't stay new for long.

Wow, you've got the hang of mountain biking quick, I nearly said in my previous post it'll be an excuse for and upgrade / replacement but didn't think it would go down too well.

Welcome to the club 8) , is all downhill on the credit cards now

I used to use electrical tape to prevent cable rub, but of course it rubs right through if the rain doesn't take it off first. Those transparent oval plastic stickers you get last a bit longer. Now there would be a good freebie for magazines to consider :)

Helicopter tape sounds like it's expensive :?

how old is the frame? Looks like some sort of corrosion on there, or is it just covered in cack?

I use fablon/clear plastic sticky backed plastic from diy shops, costs sumpink like £5 for 5 metres, much better than helecopter tape which costs £5 for 5x3 inches!.

the fablon has been on my MV for 3 years.

Its not cable rub, its the polluting fumes of the Mersey taking the paint off

SURELY thats not a 2 week old bike? Or is it new to you? Some of those marks seem to be corrosion not abrasive wear. If not a new bike for you at least a paintjob for the old one.

I have these on my head tube, work really well, if placed correctly to allow for sag on warm days

Must admit, when I saw the pictures I thought it must be an old bike that you'd got second hand - and an old clunker at that. The state of that paint work after 2 weeks is bloody terrible  Take it back to the shop.

Reet then, I have taken a close look at the pictures. And here is what I think.

Seen this a lot in my time. The cable has rubbed the paint away, and in some places exposed the alu under which has oxidised giving a certian look. This then gets rubbed too.

I'm afraid it is owner error! Sorry to say that, but anything like that in contact with the frame should have frame protection.
