I've got a 2006 6500 and have changed lots of things on the bike. But you should buy it, ride it as is and change things as and when they break or you feel you'd benefit from an upgrade.
Tyres were awful though and got changed fairly quickly. I now have Conti Vapours in the "drier" months but will switch to something more aggressive for the thick winter mud.My guide to navigating using the Garmin Edge 800

About the brakes I think it depends of the country.

Anyone know why the uk get the slx but the usa get juicy 3 I think we get the better dealhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v407/ ... CF5579.jpg

Big Stevie - have you got this yet? I'm really interested in one. Especially since bikeradar have just voted SLX the best MTB groupset ever. I'm waiting for LBS to get an 18.5 so I can have a test ride.
Anyone else got one? anything negative to report? I appreciate the tyres aren't UK winter friendly but they're easily changed.Giant Trance X 2010

Apologies for stealing the post but....
I have a 2008 Trek 6500 and the tyres seem to offer very little grip in the wet. Can anyone suggest alternatives? I generally ride trail centres in North Wales. CheersOrange Crush 2010

Hi all been searching the web for reviews on the Trek 6700 09 model and have stumbled across this thread.
Can biggstevie or how u doin add any more to the debate.
This is fast becoming my prefered option. My only concern is the fork and how it handles the rough stuff.
Many thanks.0 -

I cannot comment on how it han :P dles in the rough stuff, but my one week old 6700 is awesome. Build quality is superb, shifting very smooth and brakes seem very very efficient. I cannot fault it, other than I have a sore butt and need some tech shorts. :PMy webby: http://www.geekanoids.co.uk0 -
Cheers Davo
I wasnt being smutty ref rough stuff - lol
My 2 concerns on this bike are the short(ish) travel for 100mm and the paint scheme.
My current fork is 130mm so I am wondering if I will notice the shortage of length - ooh err again !
Secondly and this is only a minor irritant is the white colour scheme. I am worried that after a few falls and trips on the back of my bike carrier the marks will become quite visible.
As for your butt do what I do - eat more get fat more padding0 -
lol... I cannot eat more, I stopped my choccie biscuits a year ago and can't go back... oh go on then
Re. the paint scheme. I so wanted to get something else, the Orange Evo 8 was on my list because of looks. Then I tried to stretch my budget for the Trek 8000 as it was darker. Then I looked again at the 6700 and it is actually quite nice, it has grown on me.
Once you get a crud catcher on it and darken it down a little, it really does look the biz.
I cannot comment on the fork as I am such a newbie, but it seems to have good travel and is very effective. My webby: http://www.geekanoids.co.uk0 -
Thanks for your help again Davo.
Will have to jump sooner or later the in decision is killing me - sounds like a song that !0 -
I can't believe the 6500/6700 has changed much in the two years I've owned my 6500.
Fork was first thing I replaced, but only after I'd got much more in to the sport and realised how heavy the stock one was.
Actually tyres were the first thing I replaced as they were truly awful in the conditions I was riding.
The frame is very good and so it's worth upgrading bits as you "outgrow" them or they need replacing.
So I say go for the Trek and you won't be disappointed. My guide to navigating using the Garmin Edge 800

Cheers forgotrafe.
Got to give bike choice to Santa soon.
Will hang on til 1st of Dec to see if VAT decrease brings anything else into contention otherwise Trek 6700 it is.0 -
If you really don't like the colour or aren't sure about MTB as a sport then consider the 6500 and upgrade the bits later.
Cost you more in the long run if you like it and carry on.My guide to navigating using the Garmin Edge 800
