Universe to end next Wednesday.

  • How a man (Prof. Rossler) who has almost no background in theoretical particle physics can make these kind of statements I have no idea. He's a Chemical Engineer, i know chemical engineers, clever guys but wouldnt know the Quantum Field Equations if they slapped them in the face  .

Well, I know Quantum Physicists and they tend to be somewhat out of phase with reality.

Wait a minute. I haven't skied or biked the Alps yet.

If the world is to end on Wednesday my theory is that it will either happen just as I go to leave work, or the second the England footy match (which will no doubt be another diabolical performance) finishes. Talk about your life ending on a high note!!!

But something about that sign just makes you think "I wonder what'll happen if I push that button?" :)

The Universe does not end immediately. [ OK ] A small black hole forms which starts to eat the world from the inside and will eventually consume enerything. [ OK ]
Of course, the black hole will increase the gravitational pull of the earth and so make everything; you, your bike &c. a lot heavier. [ OK ] [ OK ]
    Enjoy your hill climb. [ok]

    [ OK ] [ OK ] [ OK ] this isn't working....

Problem is, that black hole, if it even occurs (which there is great debate about) will be made up of two particles weighing 1.672x10^-27kg. The resulting black hole will be less than the weight of 2 of the protons as energy will be lost in the collision, which reduces the mass by E=mc^2. A black hole that small will have no effect on anything, it will most likely blink out of existence in fractions of a second.

The world's not going to end. Don't be silly.

Sorry, theoretical physics student with an interest in particle physics.

RUN FOR THE HILLS! THE END IS NIGH!

    Better?
  • From the point of view of someone crossing the event horizon of a blackhole time travels increasingly slowly and time eventually stops and so you are stuck for the rest of eternity climbing up that sodding hill.
of course from the point of view of an external observer anything crossing the event horizon of a black hole is destined to be ripped apart by gravitational forces.
It used to be thought that nothing ever came back out of a black hole but its now known that due to Hawking radiation a black hole gradually gets smaller and smaller increasing the intensity of radiation until it vanishes up its own singularity with a huuuumungous KABOOOOOOOM!!!! after several billion years.

Was that pr*t teaching science, mythology or religion?

If science, he/she should have at least read up on the literature.

I really hope it does not mean the end of the world for everyone. Ive been without a bike for 6 weeks now and know what its like.

On the upside i suppose its one way of getting rid of gordon brown which just goes to show that every dark cloud has a silver lining.

Just in case, bye everyone. It's been a privilege chatting with you all.

If you wake up in a parallel universe, I'll be the handsome, lithe muscular guy on the S-Works leaving the peloton behind on hard climbs just for the fun of it.

that or time is running faster - is that a good or bad thing?

David I agree entirely. Every time I read about the blessed LHC or anything to do with the money spent/wasted on particle physics research makes me throw a fit.
I seriously think that the people who run LHC are hoping to find the science that will let what remains of humanity to escape 'Offworld' after we've @rsed up the Earth beyond reasonable living conditions.
All the supposed 'benefits' of the work were dreamt up way before i) the true costs were realised and ii) the far more pressing problems facing us which need addressing NOW became a priority.
Trouble is, the average jo is aware of what SHOULD be going on but the t
ers in charge faff about for so long that nothing gets done.
The amount of money involved in LHC is simply staggering - its like trying to get your head around distances from here to a bloody star.
That and bloody flights to the planets.....
We live in times where common sense and a bit of forward thinking has been lost .

Well put, I couldn't agree more with you mate! I used to be a research graduate, thankfully not in particle physics... I'm now involved with bikes & the career cahnge has been a revelation.

If it does work, and leads to a grand theory of everything, there will probably be lots of currently unforeeable spin-offs with practical applications.

Care to give an example :?:
I'm sorry, but I'm not going to wait around holding my breath for these miraculous practical applications to appear any time soon...

Actually, it's difficult enough getting funding these days to do any science that doesn't have obvious commercial or social applications. The particle physicists seem to be the exception!

I'm well aware of what you're saying because my thesis was entitled "Characterisation of Australian opals". Depsite winning a 3.5 year scholarship, I thought additional funding would be nigh impossible, but we still managed to convince the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering to give us several thousand dollars extra in order to blast bits of rock with ionic radiation. Yes we discovered something new eventually. Will it help anyone? Not bloody likely.

My point is, I learned that scientists are veritable EXPERTS in justifying research funds.

I know it's pathetic but I am actually a little bit worried. I'll will have dropped the kids off at nursery and school by then (I think the experiment happens at 8.30) so they'll be on their own if it does happen.
    :(
  • Phew!
  • WhooHoo!!! I am still here, either that or I have fallen into a blackhole and haven't noticed :?

  • Hoorah, i'm still here somewhat predictably.

....although i do seem to have no recollection of what or where I was at 8.30am this morning at the time of the experiment, maybe time as we know it stropped, maybe I was sucked into a parallel universe, i do remember a hazy vision of being a Jason Bourne type spy kicking some ass and running from the baddies.....or maybe i was just asleep dreaming..who will ever know!...sadly it didn't fix my broken clavicle...doh

I've been watching it live - booooring. No explosions, no cash-grabbing scientists sitting at solid gold computers, no evil mastermind stroking a cat and telling visiting dignitaries "...no, I expect you to DIE!". Just a bunch of people milling around. An unusual proportion have manbags, though.
