Your average and top speed

I've put this in the commuting thread, because that is where I do most of my riding and basicly I'm just curious to see the speed most people cycle at. Presumably you'll know the answer because you've got a cycle computer. If not please state that you don't.

What's your top and average speed and what bike did you do it on:

Top Speed: 29.7mph
Average Speed 12.7mph
Bike: Giant SCR3

*note I actually cycle at 15mph - and make a point of doing so. I'm trying to build up my strength and stamina to cycle at 20mph comfortably - but I recon with all the traffic lights and filtering it lowers my average speed*

Commuting I don't know as I don't have a computer. Takes about 20 minutes to about 5 miles on the flat with traffic, lights and roundabouts single speed mountain bike 44:16

Mountain bike I dunno because everytime I put a computer on I crash and break it so I stopped, On one 456.

The only records I have are on the road bike.

Average speed is normally around 18mph upto 60miles. Have done one 40mile ride averaging 21mph but that hurt so I've not tried again. Max speed is 44.1mph I can regularly hit the high thirties on a ride but seem to hit terminal velocity at 44mph as I've erached it several times but never exceeded it. Trek 1000 from a few years ago.

On my commute of 8 miles I average around 18-19mph going in to work and 20-21 coming home. I take it easy going in to avoid sweating as the work facilities are limited to say the least!! :)

Top speed is about 37mph in the tunnel going under Hyde Park corner westbound, but that was with a lot of effort and I usually do about 31 or 32 there. My slowest average speed (wind, traffic etc.) is about 14mph and my highest, on a good day, is about 16mph. My average cruising speed in neutral conditions is 20-21mph but there are a LOT of traffic lights, zebra crossings and traffic jams on the Fulham Road/Kings Road/Knightsbridge/Piccadilly etc.

Fastest there-and-back commute, approx 14.1 miles, is about 52 minutes.
  • got a top speed of 73mph, which brings up inferance and how much one can trust these little beasties.

ie air temp, the pressure in the tire, some tires are bigger/smaller than their marked size, ie they are fun but not to be taken too seriously.
  • I average between 16 and 17 mph on a 7-8 mile run. The top speed is down a steep hill so doesn't really count. I do this on a Giant cypress. My best speed for this journey is just over 18 mph.

    Hope this is useful.

It does help. I think I might have created a new game for myself.... up my average/top speed.

I think I should also have queried whether these speeds were attained on flat road surfaces.

    Today's commute's stats are:

    distance: 20.65 km
    average speed: 31.07 km/h
    max speed: 56.41 km/h

    photo#5238781293121637266

Overall, my top speed this year was 77.24 km/h going down the Moyad road in the Mourne moutains in Northern Ireland -- anything over 70 km/h is pretty intense on a bike![/img]

Well like the OP I'm also aboard a SCR 3.0 (the sig is a give away on this........)

On my commutes I can usually average between 15-16MPH, but have hit high 17's depending on where I'm working and traffic etc.
I once averaged about 18 on a 30 mile ride around my local area and can comfortably ride along at 21/22MPH on the flats in good conditions.

My top speed on the flat is around 28-29, but I did do this on a MASSIVE adrenaline rush (during a 2.5 mile sprint home with the wife in labour, averaging 19MPH )
Down a hill I can usually see high 30's and I'm sure I could get into the low-mid 40's with a long enough hill as the one's near me aren't long enough to wind up the big gear :-(

    Proof if proof is needed.

There is however, a very simple way to achieve this speed legally  (and it doesn't involve multiple magnets, setting the wheel diameter incorrectly, or getting a tow :D

I am still working on that! I only managed 23:20 on 10m TT a few weeks ago (on a horrible J2/3), but never really made it under an hour on 25. Maybe next year!

Average speed 16mph(ish). Non computer, it's 16 miles to work and I do it in 55 mins but an all day run comes in at 15-16 on clubmates bar clutter. Top speed, really terrified mph descending the Jebel on the road from Thumrait to Salalah in Oman well past the speed where I could do anything helpful if something untoward happened. Hence undertaking the truck as the Merc had failed to judge/care about my speed I got past the truck before the Merc did much to his amazement.

Average on a recovery or club ride 16-18 mph
2 hour interval ride 18-22 mph
tt or track racing up to 26.5-27.5 mph
Fastest is obviously descending 53.5 mph down the trundle at chichester on more than one occasion.
All of the above on one of my two scott cr1's or scott speedster.
  • I don't use a bike computer, so I can't say with any great accuracy, but...

On an average day, my eight mile commute in heavy traffic (including red light stops, of which there are many) takes me just under half an hour. (av. 16mph)

My PB for that route, albeit late at night and in light traffic, was 20 minutes 46seconds (including RL stops) - av. 23.12mph.

My top commuting speed was 11 minutes dead for the 5.2 miles between my home and South Kensington (traffic was virtually non-existent and the lights were very kind to me) which works out to an average speed of 28.34mph. This indicates that I might have been breaking the speed limit at times, but I was not aware of having done so.

(Disclaimer: Not realising I was breaking the limit constitutes neither a legal nor a moral defence. I do not condone breaking the speed limit on public highways...)

    Commuting:

Average about 22kph. Max about 52kph. It dependes on the terrain, surely? I have one fast downhill on the way home.

Max speed ever: 80kph, going down the Col du Tourmalet.

    Scary.

Spped limits only apply to motor vehicles except in certain places (including Richmond Park).

    Today fastest time home ever.

    According to my computer:

    23.25 km /14.44 miles
    Time 39.25 minutes
    Average: 35.3kph/ 21.93 mph
    Max 54.5kph/33.86 mph

Median speed was something close to 40kph of course, going through a local town to avoid a bad stretch on the highway I usually lose around 0.5kph on the average, so maybe my time could be better?

On my average 12 mile journey across london I average 13.5mph, cruise at about 20 (18 in a head wind).

I stop for all the lights, and generally don't charge into situations.

My best effort was recently though, I stuck to the Embankment all the way into work and averaged 16mph over my 13.56 mile journey, with a max of 26.3, I was cruising at 24mphish, and was stopped for 10 minutes.

Finally I don't feel so bad after reading this thread. Was reading somewhere on MTB section that someone averaged 18mph off road and was feeling very unfit!

On my Specialized Sirrus Hybrid over a 24 mile commute I usually average between 12.5 and 14 mph (depending on wind, traffic and how knackered I am!) Top speed I've hit is 36.7mph down a very steep hill on route.

I do! My fastest speed, ever, on a flat road with no hill build up is the slowest speed out of all the posters!

I just can't understand it, due to this thread I over took every man, woman and child on the way home yesterday. I even kept pace with a Specialized Roubaix (the one with the frame that looks like a Specialized S-Works), which was going a solid and consistent 21mph. All in all I managed to up my average speed 0.1mph. Argh.

Hmm, I may have misled you with my fastest speed. On the flat - and with a tailwind - it's about 32mph on the A4 near Heathrow, and even that was for no more than 20 seconds or so. It hurt! Without a tailwind I've probably pushed it to 28mph or so but only briefly.

Max. speed 39.6mph, commute 14.5mph, average over last 100ish miles 10.6mph about 50/50 road and off road.

All on a hardtail mtb with nobbly tyres!

My commute is very short though, could probably sprint it at 18/19mph or pootle at 11/12mph and there'd be about 5mins differance.

Since we're talking about top speeds I may as well mention that I finally broke 40mph on my Focus, managing 42.5mph descending in the North Downs on Monday pushing 50/12. That was fun.

I commute 25 miles each way, going out average 21.5 mph (best was a 22,3mph), top sped hovers around 42/43 dependent on tail wind. coming home average is 19.4. reason being is that coming home the wind is ALWAYS against me, hence top speed is in the low 30's. I should also mention aside from Kingston Hill and Putney hill (surrey) the route is very flat. Average includes traffic lights (although auto pause enabled on computer)

I average 18 - 19 mph usually on my 14.86 mile commute, did it at 21.8 mph once.

no idea what my commute top speed is as I don't have a computer, those speeds are worked out from the total times, so include time spent at lights etc.

I did top out at 48mph once on a descent near Bristol Airport on my weekend bike.

    On a 9.2 km ride (5,8 mi), I usually do 29 km/h (18,1 mph)...

Max speed never attempted is 85 km/h (53,1 mph) Scary as hell!!!

I did recently the Alp D'Huez in France for fun on holidays, managed to do the 14 km climb in 1h30, pretty good as I have a Spech Allez with a 52-39 crank and a 12-27 cassette!!

    Average was 8-9 km/h (5,6 mph)

Specialized Sirrus with pannier, 7 mile commute.

    Today's Avg 15.1mph
    Today's Top 24.6mph

That's probably about normal for me, cruising speed on a decent surface is typically 18-20mph. It's a pretty flat ride through London with plenty of traffic. Computer pauses at lights etc so that time isn't included in the average, though slowing down for them is. Going home is normally a bit slower.

Hitting speeds of 40mph+ on a bike must be very scary....had to do an emergency stop the other day and was all over the place and that was only from 20ish mph.

What always surprises me is how much of a difference the road surface seems to make to my speed. Some roads I just glide along, others are a real slog!
