Help with Halfords HRM

In an attempt to improve my fitness and cycling skillz, I’ve just bought a Halfords HRM for £25. I’ve trawled through this forum and various HRM websites, however I’m still not entirely sure how I go about using it - I understand about spending time in various zones and how less is more, but I wondered if anyone out there has experience of this particular unit?
The instruction manual is 3 page postage stamp that really only lists the functions rather than guiding you how to use them. I still haven’t measured my max rate, but used the machinehead HRM calculator to give me working values of safe training zones. The Halfords HRM lets you input min and max values for 6 Zones, but am I just supposed to memorise what these limits are as I’m riding, or is there a method of setting up a timed plan where the HRM will let me know if I’m above or below my target?
Any help or comments would be appreciated.
